Chapter 1

I called Dad the moment I left the classroom. I could immediately print a new admission ticket. As for my ID, the examiners would let me into the exam hall as long as I dropped by the exam office and verified my identity.

I didn't even need half an hour to carry out these tasks, thanks to my family's capabilities. Did Sophia Rothwood truly believe that she could stop me from taking the SAT with her little scheme?

Suddenly, a powerful force collided against my shoulder, sending me staggering backward. After I regained my balance, I looked up to see Louis Saulman's smug face.

"I just casually mentioned to Sophia that I wanted to score better than you for the SAT. I didn't expect her to immediately steal your ID and admission ticket and burn them," he said. "You're truly so pitiful, Xavier Grant."

Louis' lackeys, who were loitering behind him, began snickering upon hearing his words.

"What a joke. A shameless loser like you only got a chance to get together with Sophia because Louis wasn't interested in her."

"That's right. Louis is tall, rich, and handsome. Sophia dumped you in the blink of an eye with just a single word from him."

"Not only did she dump him, but she also stopped him from taking the SAT!" one of the lackeys exclaimed while laughing.

"There's no way that he can flaunt his results in front of Louis anymore since he's going to miss one of the exams."

I looked down and glanced at my watch. There were less than 20 minutes left until the last exam. I truly had no idea why they were just hanging around and doing nothing.

When I remained silent, one of Louis' lackeys shoved me. He cackled before asking, "Don't tell me that you're still in the dark, Xavier? Sophia has been selected as a candidate for an executive position in Grant Group. She'll immediately join the company as an executive once she graduates university.

"Her annual salary wil be $200,000. Of course, a tall, rich, and handsome man like Louis is a better match for her than you. A rat like you who can only scurry around in the sewers should stop dreaming about elevating your status by clinging to her!"

I stumbled back from the force of the shove. My back hit the wall as my phone clattered to the floor.

Tall, rich, and handsome?

I scoffed. It was true that Louis' family was rich. But according to my knowledge, his father, Barry Saulman, had just won 100 thousand dollars from the lottery a few years ago. He had then opened a small grocery store.

It was laughable that Louis was trying to compare himself to me, the sole successor of Grant Group, when he just had a little money to his name.

I couldn't help but laugh at the thought. "You resorted to such an underhanded tactic just to score better than me, Louis. I wonder who's the actual sewer rat here?"

I stared into his eyes before continuing, "Get out of my way right now! I'll settle the score with all of you, one at a time, once the SAT are over."

I picked up my fallen phone from the floor and prepared to take my leave after I was done speaking.

Louis was briefly stunned before his face turned a ruddy red. He roughly grabbed a fistful of hair on the back of my head and roared, "I see that you've lost your mind after Sophia dumped you, Xavier! Do you still think that you can take the exam? You should prepare to repeat the year instead!"

He was exerting a lot of strength, causing my scalp to throb painfully. I hastily swatted him away and aimed a punch at him. "Let go! Whether I get to take the exam is none of your business!"

Sophia walked out of the classroom in the next second. She held Louis firmly before raising her hand and slapping me hard across the face.

"Breaking up with you was my decision, Xavier! How dare you raise your hand against Louis? Do you think that you can compensate him if you hurt him?"

She then looked down and meticulously examined Louis, saying, "Don't worry, Louis. There's no way that Xavier will score better than you for the SAT."

I looked up upon hearing her words and asked, "Do you understand that what you've done today is against the law, Sophia?"

"Carrie Tillman? That's impossible. How could she be the top student in the province?" Sophia exclaimed. "Something's wrong, Xavier. Why are you only in second place? There's only a one-point difference between your scores. This can't be happening!"Carrie is always in second place. Her scores are much worse than yours. This is impossible! There must be something wrong with the scores!"I looked down and adjusted my sleeves before saying calmly, "There's no mistake. I intentionally left the last question in the last exam blank."Sophia stared at me with wide eyes. "You… You did that on purpose?""That's right," I said as I rose to my feet and grabbed my bag. "Getting first place doesn't matter to me anymore. I already received an acceptance letter from an overseas university a few days ago. I didn't answer the question because I wanted to put an end to your delusion that you still have a chance with me."I lifted my head and looked at her one last time. "You can rot here for t

I thought that Sophia was behaving strangely. I couldn't believe that she still had the nerve to seek me out. Hadn't she learned her lesson after being detained for a week?I still hadn't snapped back to my senses when she clutched my hand tightly and said, "You were able to complete your SAT without a hitch. Based on your capabilities, you'll definitely get first place, right? "As long as you get first place, the promise that Mr. Grant made to you will still count! That's why you showed up today, right? It's because you can't bear to let go of me too."Sophia paused for a moment. She sounded even more anxious when she continued, "I've thought things through. I can report for work at Grant Group as long as you get first place! I don't need to attend university. "It's fine. I can start from the lowest position in the company. I can wait for you! We can make Grant Group even better once you've graduated from university!"Sophia looked utterly serious as she rambled away. She also

I stopped looking at Sophia and pulled my phone out of my pocket. I then approached the police officers, saying, "I thought that Sophia asked me to meet her at the classroom because she wanted to give me a surprise. So I was recording on my phone when I entered the classroom."I offered my phone to them after I was done speaking. The color drained from Sophia's face when she heard me. She immediately leaped into action, reaching her hand out to snatch my phone out of my hand. However, she was too late. The police officer had already taken my phone from me and pressed the play button. The video wasn't long, but the quality was good, making everything crystal clear.Sophia stood next to the brazier, waving the documents she was holding with an unconcerned expression. She then slowly tossed them into the fire."You actually believed me when I told you to hand over your ID and admission ticket for safekeeping," she sneered. "Be good and don't show up for the exam, Xavier. Don't make

The crowd fell silent for two seconds before someone let out a loud gasp."The CEO of Grant Group, Mr. Grant, is Xavier's father?""Both of them have the last name, 'Grant'.""So, Mr. Grant actually came to pick up his son! It has nothing to do with Sophia at all!""On top of that, Xavier was escorted into the exam hall after the exam office verified his identity. Why did Sophia accuse him of illegally sneaking into the hall? She also accused him of cheating.""I'm going to laugh myself to death. Sophia even told Mr. Grant to release an official announcement regarding Xavier cheating."Sophia stood rooted to the spot. As she slowly let go of my wrist, she mumbled, "What…"She whipped her head toward me. Her lips were trembling when she stammered, "Xavier… You… How could you be Mr. Grant's son?"I shot a look of contempt at her before walking over to Dad's side. "Why not? Did you really believe that Grant Group would choose to train you if it weren't for me, Sophia?"Everyone t

Sophia was visibly stunned when she noticed Dad. She swiftly shoved me aside and rushed toward him, exclaiming, "Mr. Grant! What are you doing here?"When Louis realized that the CEO of Grant Group, Jeremiah Grant, had arrived, he hastily clapped the dust from his hands and hurried over to them. He had only taken two steps when he seemed to recall something and grabbed Sophia's arm.Lowering his voice, he whispered, "Grant Group probably knows that today is the last day of the SAT, Sophia! That's why they purposefully sent someone to pick you up to familiarize you with the inner workings of the company!"Unfortunately, they arrived just in time to see that cheater, Xavier. Mr. Grant is probably misunderstanding your relationship with him!"Sophia whipped her head up to look at Dad. Her voice was dripping with sincerity when she said, "There's been a misunderstanding, Mr. Grant! We don't have anything to do with each other! I noticed his misconduct before the exam and already took

"Why are you still standing around in a daze?" the examiner snapped, shooting an irritated look at Sophia and the others. "The exam has started! Take your seats!"Only then did Sophia and the others snap back to their senses and stumble to their seats.Sophia's face was still full of disbelief when she walked past me. "You… Why are you…"I ignored her, kept my head down, and answered the questions. I had an easy time since they weren't too hard.Meanwhile, Louis kept glancing at me from the corner of his eye. His pen even slipped from his fingers several times. It didn't take long before the exam was over.A powerful force collided against me seconds after I left the exam hall. Sophia roughly grabbed my arm and roared, "How did you get into the exam hall? There's no way that you got a replacement for your ID and admission ticket so soon. How the hell did you sneak into the hall?""Let go, Sophia," I said, looking down at her hand that was wrapped around my arm.Not only did she
