Chapter 2

Author: Hunk Alert
Mina's smug, triumphant expression sharply contrasted with the fake, syrupy congratulations she'd offered me in my past life when I had been promoted.

I kept my head down and sorted through my files. I couldn't be bothered with her.

On the day of the proposal presentation, the conference room was thick with tension. Even more surprisingly, the golden boy of Lakeshire, Cassian Mercer himself, attended in person.

In my past life, Cassian had only approached me after our company won the project, using that win as an excuse to get close to me. This time, he appeared earlier.

Alarm bells rang in my head. I couldn't help but feel that things were veering into a stranger, more uncontrollable territory.

Cassian's face was stern, his presence overwhelming. Just sitting there, he made the temperature in the room feel like it had dropped several degrees. A few of the senior designers nervously presented their proposals while he remained expressionless throughout.

When it was Mina's turn, she strutted like a peacock in full display, deliberately undoing two buttons on her blouse to reveal a tantalizing glimpse of her cleavage.

She mimicked scenes from romance novels that featured domineering CEOs and naive heroines, batting her lashes at Cassian and cooing, "Mr. Mercer, I stayed up all night working on your project. Look, I even have dark circles under my eyes."

Her contrived performance gave everyone goosebumps. Cassian's brows knitted tightly, a barely perceptible flash of disgust in his eyes.

But Mina was completely oblivious to it. She smugly unveiled her design, something that could only be described as doodles.

Just as the boss was about to cut her off, the black cat that she'd kept hidden in her bag suddenly leapt onto the long conference table. With a proud and graceful stride, it walked straight up to Cassian, let out a soft "meow", and rubbed its head against his hand.

Cassian's gaze fell on Mina's scribbled proposal, and he actually nodded. "Let's go with this one."

Pointing at the doodle, he explained to the stunned room, "This design is brimming with a childlike, back-to-basics charm. I love it."

Once the meeting ended, he even extended an invitation to Mina. "Ms. Corvelle, to celebrate our successful partnership and discuss further details, would you be free for dinner tonight?"

Mina's face flushed red, feeling both surprised and ecstatic. She agreed eagerly.

As everyone filed out, they all stared at Mina with a mix of envy and disbelief. She strutted up to me, chin held high.

"See that, Elora? Mr. Mercer personally chose my proposal and even invited me to dinner. So tell me, what was the point of you staying up all night working on that design? In the face of absolute luck, hard work means nothing! Jealous? Too bad. You just don't have the luck!"

The news of Mina snagging a million-dollar bonus and a director position, thanks to a cat, spread through the office like wildfire. People's skeptical glances quickly turned into fawning smiles.

She reveled in the attention and admiration. The black cat was her prized treasure by this point, and she took it with her everywhere. She even boasted that she would soon become Lakeshire's top socialite.

A few days later, an even bigger bombshell dropped.

Cassian was actually going to propose to Mina. He even rented an entire private island and invited everyone from our company. On paper, it was to celebrate the project, but in reality, it was a surprise for her.

Everyone envied Mina's luck, marveling that she truly was fate's favorite.

Mina was taken by her family and spent the rest of her life receiving treatment in a psychiatric hospital.I went to visit her once. She had cut her hair short and was wearing a blue-and-white striped patient's uniform, sitting on the lawn. She held a tattered plush toy cat in her arms while she hummed an off-key tune. When she saw me, she showed no reaction, her eyes remaining vacant as if she were looking at a complete stranger. I didn't disturb her. I just stood there for a while, then turned to leave. The grudge between us, spanning two lifetimes, finally came to an end in this manner. As for my father's funeral supply store, without the blessings of the dark riches, the orders plummeted, and it returned to its former quietness. I renovated the storefront for him and hired a professional marketing team. Business was neither great nor terrible, but it was enough for him to live out his later years comfortably.I resigned from my company as well. I took what was left of my mone

"No!"For the first time, terror flashed across Cassian's face. Without thinking twice, he lunged forward, but it was already too late. The glass plunged deep into the black cat's body. It let out a faint, mournful cry as its body twitched a few times before going completely still.A wisp of black mist slowly rose from its body, drifting away until it vanished into the air."Tally!"Cassian cradled the unmoving animal, his entire body frozen, like a puppet whose strings had been cut. Tears slid down his face.He had planned this for so long, sacrificed so many people, and was on the verge of success… only for it all to crumble at the very last moment. As for Mina, after delivering that stab, she seemed drained of all strength and collapsed to the floor. She laughed and cried in an unsettled kind of way, clearly having lost her mind. The old woman, realizing that things were heading in an unfavorable direction, tried to slip away through the hidden door, but I swiftly knocked he

"Shut up! Just shut your mouth!" Mina screamed like a madwoman, finally breaking down.Seeing this, the old woman's expression instantly turned stormy. She barked sharply, "Don't listen to her nonsense! Quick, the ritual is almost done!"With that, she raised the dagger in her hand and drove it down toward the black cat in the middle of the circle. She just had to kill the cat. Then, she'd retrieve the soul essence, feed it to me, and the ritual would be completed.Talia Hayes' soul would be reborn in my body."No!"Right before the dagger was about to pierce the cat, Mina lunged forward like a lunatic and threw her arms around the barely-breathing animal. The dagger cut across her arm, slicing deep enough to expose the bone."Riches! My Riches…" Mina wailed, clutching the cat tightly. After spending so much time together—even if it had started because of greed—she had ultimately developed a trace of genuine affection for the animal. That was one of the few soft spots left in hu

The old woman sneered. Then, she took the ivory bowl from Mina, pried my mouth open, and poured every last drop of the still-warm blood down my throat. The metallic taste spread through my mouth, and my stomach churned violently, but I didn't even have the strength to gag. After doing all that, they dragged me to the center of the room, where a strange circle was drawn in red pigment. The black cat was placed at the very center of the circle."Where's Cassian?" Mina asked anxiously. "Why isn't he here yet? Didn't he say he wanted to witness Tally's resurrection with his own eyes?""Mr. Mercer is entertaining guests outside. He said that once the ritual is completed, he'll personally come and take care of what's left."There was a trace of contempt in her voice, but Mina missed the hidden meaning entirely. The foolish woman still believed she would be the ultimate winner, even as she stood at death's door. The old woman didn't pay any more attention to Mina. She picked up the dagge

Mina walked to the bed, carefully picked up the black cat, and took out an old wooden box from the nightstand.Inside lay an oddly shaped dagger that glowed eerily, as well as a small ivory bowl.My eyes widened."Mina, you…""Don't be afraid," Mina said with a strange, unsettling smile. She lightly drew the dagger across her own wrist, and blood instantly welled up, dripping into the ivory bowl. Holding the bowl of blood, she walked toward me, step by step, her eyes wild and obsessive."Don't blame me, Elora. If you have to blame someone, blame your fate. You're a once-in-a-century 'pure shadow soul'. Cassian said that by using my blood as the catalyst and offering you as a sacrifice to Riches, Cassian's dead fiancee can be resurrected. And I will become the eternal lady of the Mercer household!" she said as she broke into peals of laughter. She was insane. She had completely lost it.Her laughter echoed through the empty room. Her words chilled me to the core, as if I'd been

The next day, we took a private plane to the island. At the lavish banquet, Cassian announced to all the guests and the media, "I would like to announce that I've found the love of my life, and she is Mina Corvelle."His deep eyes sparkled mesmerizingly as he added, "It's strange, really, but it was a cat that brought us together. It brought my beloved to me."Then, he dropped to one knee and proposed to Mina with a huge diamond ring."Mina, will you marry me? I'm willing to transfer all my assets to you, and in this life, I'll love you and only you."The loving declaration drew screams of excitement from everyone present. Mina, dizzy with joy, immediately slipped the ring on her finger.Only I noticed that even though Cassian was proposing to Mina, he had never once looked her in the eye. His gaze kept drifting, almost unconsciously, to the black cat she cradled in her arms.True to his word, he immediately had his lawyers transfer his assets to her. Hundreds of billions of dol
