"Mine! This cat is mine!" Mina Corvelle shrieked, her voice cracking with excitement.

Suddenly, the blind old fortune-teller sitting at her roadside stall started muttering mysteriously, "Young lady, the cat you're holding in your arms is a once-in-a-century dark fortune cat. Once it chooses its master, the owner will gain immense riches, but—"

Mina cut her off impatiently, her face brimming with unrestrained fervor. "Ma'am, what do I need to do to make it recognize me as its master?"

The fortune-teller hesitated a little before answering. "Just let it lick a drop of your blood."

Mina hurriedly thrust her scratched hand in front of the black cat. Once the cat licked it, a faint black mist shot out from its body before swiftly vanishing into the center of Mina's forehead.

"Done! It's done! It recognized me as its master!" Mina yelled, dancing around in excitement. She hugged and kissed the cat.

She turned to glare at me sideways, her lips curling into a mocking smile. "Elora Aldridge, I'm going to get rich! As for you, you can spend the rest of your life clinging to that measly salary of yours!"

With that, she hugged the cat and disappeared into the night without looking back.

I stood in the same spot, rubbing my aching foot that Mina had stepped on. A chilling calm settled over me.

In my past life, after I adopted that cat, it would always scratch me, both deliberately or accidentally. Then, it would immediately scamper over and lick my bleeding wounds, acting all affectionate and guilty.

Back then, I had only thought that the cat was just being playful or naughty, but now, I realized it was feeding on my blood with every lick.

Little did Mina know—that black cat didn't just attract riches, it attracted disaster too. Every gift from the cat came with a hidden price tag.

Come to think of it, I was actually quite grateful to Mina in my past life for setting that fire and setting me free. Since she wanted this good luck so badly, I hoped she got exactly what she wished for.

The next morning, Mina bragged excitedly at the company.

"My house is part of a redevelopment buyout! I'll be compensated with eight apartments and 30 million dollars in cash!"

The surrounding coworkers all froze for a moment before crowding around to congratulate her.

"Wow! Mina, you're about to become super rich! Congratulations!"

"No kidding! Don't forget to look out for us from now on!"

An older colleague whispered a reminder. "Keep it down. Don't let the boss hear. Better not flaunt it in front of him."

Mina shrugged her off and scoffed disdainfully. "What's there to be scared of? I'm going to be the wife of the golden boy of Lakeshire soon. Even he will be bowing at my feet! Why should I be afraid of the boss of this little company?"

Her bravado silenced the coworkers who had been fawning over her. Everyone exchanged skeptical looks, thinking Mina had let her wealthy fantasies go to her head and was now spouting nonsense.

Right then, the boss walked into the office with a serious expression. He demanded that our department produce a concept design by the next day.

"The client this time is Mercer Group. Whoever's proposal gets selected will not only receive a million-dollar bonus, but will also be promoted to department director immediately."

In an instant, the entire design department erupted. The prize was enormous, and everyone rolled up their sleeves, eager to give it a go.

Only Mina's expression was full of disdain.

"It's just a design bid. Look at you lot, acting like you've never seen something like this before."

A colleague couldn't help but retort, "Mina, this is a Mercer Group project! If you win this, you'll be set for the rest of your life!"

"As if the rest of my life depends on this," Mina remarked, deliberately raising her voice in my direction.

"Some people spend their whole lives chasing such a small dream, but not me though. I'm born lucky. Immense riches will come knocking on their own."

Mina was taken by her family and spent the rest of her life receiving treatment in a psychiatric hospital.I went to visit her once. She had cut her hair short and was wearing a blue-and-white striped patient's uniform, sitting on the lawn. She held a tattered plush toy cat in her arms while she hummed an off-key tune. When she saw me, she showed no reaction, her eyes remaining vacant as if she were looking at a complete stranger. I didn't disturb her. I just stood there for a while, then turned to leave. The grudge between us, spanning two lifetimes, finally came to an end in this manner. As for my father's funeral supply store, without the blessings of the dark riches, the orders plummeted, and it returned to its former quietness. I renovated the storefront for him and hired a professional marketing team. Business was neither great nor terrible, but it was enough for him to live out his later years comfortably.I resigned from my company as well. I took what was left of my mone

"No!"For the first time, terror flashed across Cassian's face. Without thinking twice, he lunged forward, but it was already too late. The glass plunged deep into the black cat's body. It let out a faint, mournful cry as its body twitched a few times before going completely still.A wisp of black mist slowly rose from its body, drifting away until it vanished into the air."Tally!"Cassian cradled the unmoving animal, his entire body frozen, like a puppet whose strings had been cut. Tears slid down his face.He had planned this for so long, sacrificed so many people, and was on the verge of success… only for it all to crumble at the very last moment. As for Mina, after delivering that stab, she seemed drained of all strength and collapsed to the floor. She laughed and cried in an unsettled kind of way, clearly having lost her mind. The old woman, realizing that things were heading in an unfavorable direction, tried to slip away through the hidden door, but I swiftly knocked he

"Shut up! Just shut your mouth!" Mina screamed like a madwoman, finally breaking down.Seeing this, the old woman's expression instantly turned stormy. She barked sharply, "Don't listen to her nonsense! Quick, the ritual is almost done!"With that, she raised the dagger in her hand and drove it down toward the black cat in the middle of the circle. She just had to kill the cat. Then, she'd retrieve the soul essence, feed it to me, and the ritual would be completed.Talia Hayes' soul would be reborn in my body."No!"Right before the dagger was about to pierce the cat, Mina lunged forward like a lunatic and threw her arms around the barely-breathing animal. The dagger cut across her arm, slicing deep enough to expose the bone."Riches! My Riches…" Mina wailed, clutching the cat tightly. After spending so much time together—even if it had started because of greed—she had ultimately developed a trace of genuine affection for the animal. That was one of the few soft spots left in hu

The old woman sneered. Then, she took the ivory bowl from Mina, pried my mouth open, and poured every last drop of the still-warm blood down my throat. The metallic taste spread through my mouth, and my stomach churned violently, but I didn't even have the strength to gag. After doing all that, they dragged me to the center of the room, where a strange circle was drawn in red pigment. The black cat was placed at the very center of the circle."Where's Cassian?" Mina asked anxiously. "Why isn't he here yet? Didn't he say he wanted to witness Tally's resurrection with his own eyes?""Mr. Mercer is entertaining guests outside. He said that once the ritual is completed, he'll personally come and take care of what's left."There was a trace of contempt in her voice, but Mina missed the hidden meaning entirely. The foolish woman still believed she would be the ultimate winner, even as she stood at death's door. The old woman didn't pay any more attention to Mina. She picked up the dagge

Mina walked to the bed, carefully picked up the black cat, and took out an old wooden box from the nightstand.Inside lay an oddly shaped dagger that glowed eerily, as well as a small ivory bowl.My eyes widened."Mina, you…""Don't be afraid," Mina said with a strange, unsettling smile. She lightly drew the dagger across her own wrist, and blood instantly welled up, dripping into the ivory bowl. Holding the bowl of blood, she walked toward me, step by step, her eyes wild and obsessive."Don't blame me, Elora. If you have to blame someone, blame your fate. You're a once-in-a-century 'pure shadow soul'. Cassian said that by using my blood as the catalyst and offering you as a sacrifice to Riches, Cassian's dead fiancee can be resurrected. And I will become the eternal lady of the Mercer household!" she said as she broke into peals of laughter. She was insane. She had completely lost it.Her laughter echoed through the empty room. Her words chilled me to the core, as if I'd been

The next day, we took a private plane to the island. At the lavish banquet, Cassian announced to all the guests and the media, "I would like to announce that I've found the love of my life, and she is Mina Corvelle."His deep eyes sparkled mesmerizingly as he added, "It's strange, really, but it was a cat that brought us together. It brought my beloved to me."Then, he dropped to one knee and proposed to Mina with a huge diamond ring."Mina, will you marry me? I'm willing to transfer all my assets to you, and in this life, I'll love you and only you."The loving declaration drew screams of excitement from everyone present. Mina, dizzy with joy, immediately slipped the ring on her finger.Only I noticed that even though Cassian was proposing to Mina, he had never once looked her in the eye. His gaze kept drifting, almost unconsciously, to the black cat she cradled in her arms.True to his word, he immediately had his lawyers transfer his assets to her. Hundreds of billions of dol
