Chapter 1

I made up some excuse and slipped out of the private room. The cold wind outside the hotel cut into my cheeks.

I pulled my coat tighter and caught a cab home, weaving out of habit around the security cameras and the elevator whenever anyone else was in it.

Once the door was shut behind me, my phone kept buzzing with messages from the group chat.

[Izzy and Sebastian really are a perfect match.]

[I heard they grew up together, and Sebastian's family's business empire isn't small either.]

[I know this one, it's called a power marriage. A perfect alliance!]

I couldn't stand to read another line after that. It sat on my chest like a boulder. I pulled out my marriage certificate with Izzy and set it on the table. Every time I felt like I couldn't hold on anymore, that little certificate was the one thing that kept me going, a single glance enough to convince me there was still hope.

Something stirred at the entryway. Izzy Presley was home.

The moment she walked in, she saw me sitting on the couch. She said, offhandedly, "There's no point reading anything in that group chat."

"Is the engagement real?" I didn't look at her. My voice came out rough.

Izzy's hand paused halfway through hanging up her coat. She pulled a document out of a folder and slid it across the table to me. The words DIVORCE AGREEMENT stabbed at my eyes, sitting there beside the marriage certificate like they didn't belong in the same world.

She sat down next to me.

"The day after Sebastian came back, our families started discussing an alliance by marriage. He and I have had a betrothal between us this whole time."

My breath caught. I looked up sharply, my mouth opening, but before I could get a word out, Izzy cut me off.

"If I'm going to get engaged to him, I have to divorce you first. Sebastian's family has the resources to dig into this. All it takes is one search, and they'll find you. Just sign at the bottom."

My mind went blank.

Izzy seemed to know I couldn't process this so fast, and she waited patiently.

"Why?" I asked. "Why are you telling me this only now?"

"I love you, Stevie. But my career matters more."

She pushed the document a little closer to me.

"The Woods can help me. You can't. I promise you, this is only temporary. Once I've got my footing, we can remarry."

My heart sank. On the day we'd registered our marriage, she'd said the exact same thing, that once she found her footing, once her career took off, she'd announce us to the world.

I'd waited three years. And what I got in the end was a single sentence: divorce.

"Izzy, do you think I've never been good enough to stand next to you?"

The color drained from her face. And that was when I understood. It was exactly what she thought. Because I didn't come from the right kind of family, I wasn't fit to stand at her side.

The air went cold for a moment. Izzy put the divorce agreement away. "I'll give you time to think it over."

The words had barely left her mouth when a knock sounded at the door. A second later came the beep of the door code, and Sebastian Wood let himself in like he owned the place. He froze for a second when he saw me there.

"Stevie, it's this late, and you're still here?"

Izzy looked like she hadn't expected him to show up either. There was a flash of panic in her eyes.

"I'm just here to drop off some documents. I was about to leave anyway," I said.

I got to my feet. Izzy shot me a quick glance and gave a small nod.

"I've got the files. You can go now."

My chest ached. Before I could leave, Sebastian stopped me. He pulled out a thick stack of cash, smiling faintly.

"You've been running around for her for a long time now. Consider this a bonus, paid a little early."

He pressed the thick envelope of cash into my hand. Before I could refuse it, the front door had already swung shut.

This was Izzy's and my home. I'd spent three years hiding here, sneaking around, and this apartment was the only place I'd ever gotten to catch my breath.

But now, I didn't even have that anymore.

I saw Izzy again three days later. I'd already found a new job, though I hadn't started yet.I never expected her to actually come find me, and I definitely never expected her to call off the wedding with Sebastian."You've seen what's online. I'm not marrying Sebastian."Izzy said it plainly.I frowned. Whether she married Sebastian or not, what did that have to do with me?"Ms. Presley, is that the only reason you came? You didn't need to tell me any of this. We're already divorced, after all."My cold, distant tone caught her off guard. From the moment she'd agreed to marry Sebastian, there should have been no future left for the two of us. It was only because I kept giving her chance after chance, over and over, that we'd gotten this far. But after three years together, she still hadn't given me even the most basic trust."Stevie, doesn't any of this matter to you at all?""Should it?" I asked. "We don't have any relationship left. What exactly am I supposed to care about?

Izzy couldn't believe it."Moved out?"The landlord gave her a puzzled look, then turned back to showing the new tenant around the unit, no longer paying her any attention. It felt like a stone had settled on Izzy's chest, making it hard to breathe. She called her grandmother right away."Grandma, did Stevie really leave?""Yes, he did."Izzy felt herself go numb. She never would have imagined Stevie actually leaving, not when the two of them hadn't officially filed for divorce.Whatever had happened between them before, Stevie had never once brought up breaking things off completely. Izzy refused to believe he'd actually divorce her for real. She told herself he was just sulking, that he'd found it hard to accept her getting married to someone else and had chosen to walk away for a while to cool off.To prove herself right, she immediately had her secretary track down where Stevie had gone. At the same time, her secretary passed along another piece of news."Ms. Presley, abou

Izzy's family was busy hashing out the details of the wedding, but her mind was full of nothing but Stevie. The two of them had been secretly married for three years now. She'd once assumed Stevie would never agree to keep it hidden, that she'd even have to fight her family over it. She never imagined he'd actually go along with it.And so it had gone, for three whole years. In the eyes of everyone around them, she and Stevie were nothing but strangers. There had even been a stretch, early on, when she'd done things that hurt him badly, just to avoid suspicion. But she'd always made it up to him afterward, one way or another. Then, over this past year, she'd started attending more and more business dinners to chase down investors, which put her in close, frequent contact with the people she worked with. Still, at the end of the day, she'd never actually crossed any line. For the sake of her career, for the sake of the Presley family, she hadn't had the bandwidth to manage Stevie's

The moment Izzy saw Stevie's comment, she called him right away, demanding to know what he thought he was doing. But no matter how many times it rang, no one picked up. The texts she sent went unanswered too.Izzy couldn't quite settle. Beside her, Charles and Elaine Wood, along with Jerry and Marie Presley, were all wrapped up in the excitement of their children's upcoming wedding. It was around then that Angela called Izzy into the study."Grandma, did you need something?"Angela's face was dead serious."What's really going on between you and Stevie? Is it true that the two of you are married?"Izzy froze, then forced a smile. "Grandma, what are you talking about? He's just my assistant..."Angela's expression didn't budge. Her cane struck the floor."Do you really think I'm too old and foolish to find anything out?"Izzy's face went pale. Every excuse she might have offered lodged itself in her throat. She knew exactly what her grandmother was capable of. There was no wa

That evening, Izzy came to find me at the place I was renting. When she saw the bruise still swollen on my cheek, her expression softened a little, maybe out of guilt."I was just so worried about Grandma at the time, so I...""It's fine." I cut her off before she could finish, and it left her looking a little awkward. She sighed. "Stevie, I don't want things to end up like this between us. But there's nothing else I can do. Sebastian's the suspicious type. He's been asking me for days what exactly you and I are to each other. That's the only reason I came up with that excuse."I gave a bitter twist of a smile."So you'd rather let them assume I'm a homewrecker?"Izzy let out a breath."Whatever you want, I can make it up to you. Weren't you always talking about wanting to go to Iceland?"She kept going, word after word, still caught up in her own version of things, getting more worked up as she spoke."Once I've got things settled, once we get remarried, we'll go to Iceland f

The day after I left the Presley family's old house, there was a sharp, urgent knock at my door. I'd barely gotten it open when a burning pain shot across my cheek. Before I could even react, Izzy's voice sliced through the air right next to my ear."Stevie, what did you do to my grandmother? She was fine yesterday. This morning, right after she finished the royal jelly you sent over, she was rushed into emergency surgery!"My ears were still ringing. Half my face had already started to swell. The commotion drew the neighbors out, heads poking through their windows in annoyance.Sebastian showed up a moment later, pulling Izzy back."Calm down. Stevie has no reason to hurt your grandmother."Izzy looked like she'd lost all reason. She wrenched her hand out of his grip."How could there be no reason?"The rest of her sentence caught in her throat, and her eyes flicked toward Sebastian without meaning to. That was when it clicked for me. Something had happened to Angela."That b
