Chapter 2

Author: Nora Blythe
For the better part of a month after that, Izzy and I had no contact at all. Ever since Sebastian had come back, she'd cleared every trace of me out of the apartment to avoid suspicion and left me to rent a place of my own.

The next time I saw her was at the Presley family's old house. She walked in with her fingers laced through Sebastian's. The moment she saw me, the smile on her face went stiff, and she let go of his hand without thinking.

Sebastian followed her gaze to me, his brow furrowing, and his tone turned less than friendly.

"Stevie, is your job really this light on work? Is this the kind of place you get to show up to?"

Izzy's expression wasn't much better. She made up some excuse to send Sebastian off, then walked quickly over to me. She pulled me into a corner and lowered her voice.

"Didn't I tell you to keep your distance for a while? What are you doing here?"

"Angela told me to come," I cut her off before she could finish.

Izzy let out a cold laugh. "My grandmother told you to come? Not a chance."

I pressed my lips together, a little sharpness creeping into my voice. "The big-shot CEO of Presley Group's grandmother falls sick, and all she can spare is her assistant. If I don't come, who will?"

Izzy froze for a second before she understood what I meant. Angela Presley was getting on in years, and her health had never been strong. Izzy's parents were always off traveling, and Izzy herself was buried in work. It had always been me who looked after the old woman.

Izzy was about to say something more when Sebastian came back over. She immediately put some distance between us and shot me a look.

"Stevie, if there's nothing else, you should get going."

"Get going where? Stevie hardly ever comes by. Stay and eat before you leave."

Angela leaned on her cane, chuckling as she caught hold of my hand.

"My health hasn't been good these past years, and you're always so busy with work. Stevie comes by and keeps me company every time he visits. What's wrong with me wanting to treat him to a meal?"

Hearing her own grandmother say that, Izzy managed an awkward smile.

After we'd registered our marriage, she'd kept it hidden from everyone in her family. She'd told me that if I became her assistant, we could at least be together all day even if we couldn't tell anyone the truth.

Back then, all I cared about was being near her, so I'd agreed without hesitation. I learned to play the part. I learned to hide. Looking back on it now, none of it had ever really been necessary. Izzy had never taken me seriously to begin with.

That was when Sebastian spoke up. "Angela, I'm back in the country now anyway, and I'll be marrying Izzy eventually. Let me take care of you from here on."

As he said it, his eyes kept flicking toward me, wary.

Not long after, at the dinner table, Izzy's parents had rushed back specially for the occasion. It was Jerry and Marie Presley who'd come home, and the whole meal was spent discussing Izzy's wedding to Sebastian. They went back and forth over a good date while I sat there the whole time, nothing more than an outsider.

It was around then that Angela turned to me with a smile.

"Stevie, you're not getting any younger. Do you have a girlfriend?"

The question caught Izzy's attention.

"No," I said.

Angela perked up, apparently interested, and immediately started rattling off names of women she wanted to introduce me to. Right as she was getting into it, Izzy's spoon slipped from her hand and clattered to the floor. She bent to pick them up, and after that, she didn't look at me again.

"Mom, let's just set the engagement with Sebastian for the eighth next month."

I went blank for a second, my fingers going numb. The eighth of next month happened to be the exact date of Izzy and my third wedding anniversary.

I saw Izzy again three days later. I'd already found a new job, though I hadn't started yet.I never expected her to actually come find me, and I definitely never expected her to call off the wedding with Sebastian."You've seen what's online. I'm not marrying Sebastian."Izzy said it plainly.I frowned. Whether she married Sebastian or not, what did that have to do with me?"Ms. Presley, is that the only reason you came? You didn't need to tell me any of this. We're already divorced, after all."My cold, distant tone caught her off guard. From the moment she'd agreed to marry Sebastian, there should have been no future left for the two of us. It was only because I kept giving her chance after chance, over and over, that we'd gotten this far. But after three years together, she still hadn't given me even the most basic trust."Stevie, doesn't any of this matter to you at all?""Should it?" I asked. "We don't have any relationship left. What exactly am I supposed to care about?

Izzy couldn't believe it."Moved out?"The landlord gave her a puzzled look, then turned back to showing the new tenant around the unit, no longer paying her any attention. It felt like a stone had settled on Izzy's chest, making it hard to breathe. She called her grandmother right away."Grandma, did Stevie really leave?""Yes, he did."Izzy felt herself go numb. She never would have imagined Stevie actually leaving, not when the two of them hadn't officially filed for divorce.Whatever had happened between them before, Stevie had never once brought up breaking things off completely. Izzy refused to believe he'd actually divorce her for real. She told herself he was just sulking, that he'd found it hard to accept her getting married to someone else and had chosen to walk away for a while to cool off.To prove herself right, she immediately had her secretary track down where Stevie had gone. At the same time, her secretary passed along another piece of news."Ms. Presley, abou

Izzy's family was busy hashing out the details of the wedding, but her mind was full of nothing but Stevie. The two of them had been secretly married for three years now. She'd once assumed Stevie would never agree to keep it hidden, that she'd even have to fight her family over it. She never imagined he'd actually go along with it.And so it had gone, for three whole years. In the eyes of everyone around them, she and Stevie were nothing but strangers. There had even been a stretch, early on, when she'd done things that hurt him badly, just to avoid suspicion. But she'd always made it up to him afterward, one way or another. Then, over this past year, she'd started attending more and more business dinners to chase down investors, which put her in close, frequent contact with the people she worked with. Still, at the end of the day, she'd never actually crossed any line. For the sake of her career, for the sake of the Presley family, she hadn't had the bandwidth to manage Stevie's

The moment Izzy saw Stevie's comment, she called him right away, demanding to know what he thought he was doing. But no matter how many times it rang, no one picked up. The texts she sent went unanswered too.Izzy couldn't quite settle. Beside her, Charles and Elaine Wood, along with Jerry and Marie Presley, were all wrapped up in the excitement of their children's upcoming wedding. It was around then that Angela called Izzy into the study."Grandma, did you need something?"Angela's face was dead serious."What's really going on between you and Stevie? Is it true that the two of you are married?"Izzy froze, then forced a smile. "Grandma, what are you talking about? He's just my assistant..."Angela's expression didn't budge. Her cane struck the floor."Do you really think I'm too old and foolish to find anything out?"Izzy's face went pale. Every excuse she might have offered lodged itself in her throat. She knew exactly what her grandmother was capable of. There was no wa

That evening, Izzy came to find me at the place I was renting. When she saw the bruise still swollen on my cheek, her expression softened a little, maybe out of guilt."I was just so worried about Grandma at the time, so I...""It's fine." I cut her off before she could finish, and it left her looking a little awkward. She sighed. "Stevie, I don't want things to end up like this between us. But there's nothing else I can do. Sebastian's the suspicious type. He's been asking me for days what exactly you and I are to each other. That's the only reason I came up with that excuse."I gave a bitter twist of a smile."So you'd rather let them assume I'm a homewrecker?"Izzy let out a breath."Whatever you want, I can make it up to you. Weren't you always talking about wanting to go to Iceland?"She kept going, word after word, still caught up in her own version of things, getting more worked up as she spoke."Once I've got things settled, once we get remarried, we'll go to Iceland f

The day after I left the Presley family's old house, there was a sharp, urgent knock at my door. I'd barely gotten it open when a burning pain shot across my cheek. Before I could even react, Izzy's voice sliced through the air right next to my ear."Stevie, what did you do to my grandmother? She was fine yesterday. This morning, right after she finished the royal jelly you sent over, she was rushed into emergency surgery!"My ears were still ringing. Half my face had already started to swell. The commotion drew the neighbors out, heads poking through their windows in annoyance.Sebastian showed up a moment later, pulling Izzy back."Calm down. Stevie has no reason to hurt your grandmother."Izzy looked like she'd lost all reason. She wrenched her hand out of his grip."How could there be no reason?"The rest of her sentence caught in her throat, and her eyes flicked toward Sebastian without meaning to. That was when it clicked for me. Something had happened to Angela."That b
