Chapter 9

last update Last Updated: 2023-08-07 11:57:54
Driving up to the summer pack has much the same feeling as that first time he re-entered it all those years ago and found out the depth of the betrayal. The people that he thought would be there for him, the ones that he considered family. The ones he considered good people.

He thought it was bad then. But the more he learned, the more he thought about it, the worse it became.

Jaxson's hands move without him releasing his grip in the slightest, the cheap plastic steering wheel making a sort of screeching sound under his hands.

Alaska finally looks up from the radio and places a soft hand over his.

"It is all going to be fine"

Jaxson is like this every single time. It is like that same feeling of dread and clarity washes over him and then every time he has to swallow down all those intense feelings and smile at the scheming bastards that caused him to lose so much, the ones he actually went to as a savior were the ones that took it all away.

He believed that this trip would help, b

  • She is his beta   Chapter 49

Valen tries to keep his back pressed against the cushioned office chair, but even with concentrated effort he finds himself leaning forward closer to the screens. He takes a deep shuddering breath, even with the continued lack of sleep, the anticipation is enough to get the adrenaline flowing through his veins. He adjusts the microphone on the headset once more, as if one millimeter either way will make the difference in his ability to control of situation."Is everyone in position?""Ready"A chorus comes back at him, and he grits his teeth, giving up the fight and leaning closer to the screens. He is still in the safety of the Autumn pack within the confines of the alpha office. He can't help but second guess himself about sending others to do the task. He is anxious, but he isn’t foolhardy. There was only so much he could find out. An address isn’t enough to make up for the lack of knowledge for the last three years. This is a reconnaissance mission.Arden is leaning over his fathe

  • She is his beta   Chapter 48

It doesn’t matter to Valen that Jaxson and Alaska haven’t even equaled the death toll of what was taken from them. The Barrow’s don’t lose. Retribution needs to be taken for what was lost and this is about self-preservation. Fatigue still plagues him and, at the end, nothing can ever be the same, but he will never bow down. He still has his life, and he refuses to let it all fall. Valen stands up, they have wasted enough time."...Lets go""Where are we going?""The autumn pack"They need to know where Jaxson and Alaska are, they need to make up all this ground quickly and the pairs first advantage is that they are hidden, while they know every part of the seasons packs inner workings. They are able to work on the outskirts, avoiding detection, which is how they were able to succeed. They can no longer be the enigma.Arden barely glossed over the problems within the businesses. Draven had picked it up and the oldest set of twins had flagged it enough to make them suspect Jax’s involve

  • She is his beta   Chapter 47

Valen rubs his hands down his face. He has done it so many times in the past half an hour that he's scared at least one layer of skin has been removed with the rigorous motion. He might actually have at some point. He just can’t feel it and, with the situation in front of him now, he couldn't care less if he rubbed off every layer until his jaw bone is showing. He isn't sure if he would even feel it at all. It still wouldn’t be his biggest loss of the day.Arden has calmed down enough and has taken a seat and finally managed to explain a little more clearly. Even though clear would be the overstatement of the century, Arden really knows very little and is concentrating far more on the loss of his twin and the culprits than how they actually managed to get there in the first place.Valen has gone through the first stage of grief in such a short time, straight through to anger. Frustration is pulsing through his veins. They just left the summer pack without saying a single thing to him.

  • She is his beta   Chapter 46

The fight that Arden worries about doesn't happen. They scour the edge of the forest, following the direction that the two were seen taking and even though the ground is in the ideal conditions for tracking they seem to lose any trace of the two unreasonably quickly.Jaxson was meant to be weak. What was done to his fate was supposed to be enough to cripple the man and even though they know now that it was a ruse, it is still impossible to think that the man who was flailing about and screaming in pain could escape as flawlessly as that. The group in pursuit are the ones lagging. The sodden ground which should hold the tracks so much more effectively has been covered, the rain doing everything to cover every other trace of the pairs quick departure and the groups incoherent and desperate pursuit filled with anger and very little reason has done everything else to trample any sign that might have been left.Their messy minds unable to focus, they could have missed something or there co

  • She is his beta   Chapter 45

The pack doctors' words are enough to get a few people in the crowd rushing forward to help. Some people are tearing off their sodden clothing to try and bandage the wound, others are grabbing her body and transporting her quickly towards the pack hospital, not caring that she was supposed to die and Arden had every intention of killing her. If there is a chance to save her, then they need to do it. This is autumn pack lands and considering who she was supposed to be in this place, they need to do all they can. Arden’s rule means little here; there was no fair trial, and it really just seemed like she was collateral damage. Even if Jax has done far too much, it really seems like Arden didn't know that until after he carried out the punishment. If she is strong enough to hold onto life even with such an injury, then they have to preserve it the best they can.Just because she is alive doesn’t mean she is in a good state, and she really needs urgent medical attention. The doctor kicks h

  • She is his beta   Chapter 44

Alaska doesn't stop to revel in her victory, nor does she even pause for a moment to celebrate her accomplishment. As she looks down at the back of the blonde head, his face is pressed unceremoniously into the muddy ground. It is another face marked off the list. Taking five down to two, making it a much more even fight. Eradicating more than half of their force. It is a momentous occasion, but there is a lot more to the plan than the actual murder. The escape is much more important, barely half the job is done.Instead of drawing attention to herself, she moves just as stealthily through the crowd as she did before. The time between arrival and departure is barely a minute and the toll is catastrophic. Cohen would never imagine that he would be taken down so easily in the same way that Arden never suspects that such things are happening behind his back.Alaska looks from Cohen to Jaxson. Jaxson played his part far better than she thought possible, he is in a position that she never w

  • She is his beta   Chapter 43

Mila thought she was cold before, but now her extremities are frozen to the point of pain, like they're about to drop from her body. She takes a deep shuddering breath in, taking as much oxygen as she can around her constricted throat, but it isn't enough to calm her or even sustain her. Her lungs hurt. Her eyes which were worried now carry with them a desperation, she can't look anywhere but Jax. If Arden had said such words the day before she might have believed he was joking, but the sinister way in which he hissed it, she can feel death closing in. Jax is not reacting and while Arden whispers the words to her, Jax is close enough that he should be able to hear and if Mila even knew a fraction of the strength he actually possesses, she would know that he heard every word. He doesn't react because it is all within expectation. If Arden said something else then his face might show a hint of surprise. His blue eyes hold neither shock nor worry or sadness. There is a vague sort of lo

  • She is his beta   Chapter 42

As soon as the words drop, the crowd closes in around them, making a full circle around the feuding parties. It isn't just Jaxson and Alaska's appearance that is drawing all the interest; it is also the mention of the packs Alpha. The alpha, which has been noticeably missing through all of this, while Draven is hard to relate to and is as cold as ice, a pack needs an alpha to run smoothly, and he has never done anything bad. He gets the work done and runs the pack smoothly. While there are no friendships or sense of community like there was before, most have become accustomed to the new way in these years. While Arden didn't let too much information go, some of the members, mostly the really well-trained ones, have been picking up the anomaly in the pack. Even without the leadership blood value, it is impossible for a strong wolf not to feel the emptiness in the air and have that same feeling that the alpha bloods are now fighting off of wanting to claim the pack. While there hasn’t b

  • She is his beta   Chapter 41

Cohen looks at Arden gritting his teeth. If those two have nothing to do with it, then they are going to be the ones that look like fools. It is not just their father who they are worried about making a humiliating spectacle in front of if they have got it wrong. They have managed to make a production already and nothing has even been said. If they are wrong, and they are fishing for information that is not even there, then they risk a fracture with the pack members which might be hard to recover from. The good guy act might be broken. The Autumn pack seemed like the logical place to hold such a meeting because they found the information here. It seemed like the best choice for rubbing salt in the wound and having them on the backfoot, making them attend what was once their birthright. But some loyalties run deep. There is every chance that some members of the pack will be easily swayed to that side which is something they have avoided for all these years. If they are over the top in
