Chapter 1

The line went quiet for a few seconds before I was transferred to the Major Crimes Unit.

Another officer picked up the phone and said, "Captain Marcus Jones from Major Crimes speaking. You said someone was murdered at an engagement party at the Gomez Estate? Who's the victim?"

My hand trembled as I held my phone. "Her name is Opal. Opal Lane. She's my...ex-girlfriend."

"How do you know she was murdered?" Marcus asked from the other side.

"The woman in the engagement party video," I said, staring at the frozen image on my screen as my throat tightened, "isn't her."

The line went silent for two seconds before Marcus asked, "Do you know what you're saying?"

"I do." I kept my eyes on the paused video. "Please, just investigate it."

Marcus did not waste any time and immediately dispatched officers.

Meanwhile, I hung up, grabbed my jacket, and rushed out of my apartment.

-

Twenty minutes later, the cab stopped outside the estate.

It stood in the most expensive neighborhood on Northside. Every residence here was detached and had its own gardens and courtyards. The front gate alone was wider than my entire apartment.

Several police cars were already parked outside, their red and blue lights cutting through the darkness.

I jumped out and rushed toward the manor house.

"Stop! Who are you?" Two officers blocked my path.

"I'm the one who made the report!" I cried.

It was at this time that an officer stepped out of the manor house. He was in his forties, with dark skin and sharp eyes. It was Captain Marcus.

He looked at me up and down. "You're Tommy Fletcher?"

"Where's Opal? Did you find her?" I asked nervously.

Marcus did not answer. He simply stepped aside, and the door opened as light spilled out.

There she was, standing in the doorway. She wore a white dress with her hair pinned up, holding the arm of a man in a dark blue suit.

It was Opal.

No…

That was not Opal.

I could not move my eyes from her face.

She glanced at me and said, "Tommy? What are you doing here?"

Her tone was flat, as if she were asking why a neighbor she barely knew was standing outside her house.

Marcus stepped forward. "Ms. Opal, do you know him?"

"I do." She nodded. "He's my ex."

There was no emotion on her face, nor was there any additional explanation. All she offered was those three words.

The man beside her frowned. "The engagement party just ended, and your ex-boyfriend is already making a scene at your door. What are people going to think of my family?"

Opal hurried to apologize. "I'm sorry. I'll deal with him right away."

Marcus turned to me, his expression darkening. "Mr. Fletcher, if you don't have a reasonable explanation, I'll have to treat this as a false police report. Do you understand the consequences?"

"She's not Opal." I could hear my own voice clearly.

"I'm not Opal?" She looked as if she had just heard a joke.

Then, her expression went cold. "Tommy, what kind of joke is this?"

More people began to gather and the estate's security guards; neighbors who were passing by and several people who had come outside in their pajamas to watch.

"Has he gone mad?"

"His former girlfriend got engaged and he can't accept it, I guess. If he can't have her, he wants to ruin her, I suppose."

"Calling the police and claiming she's dead? That's quite vicious."

People started raising their phones, and Dean's expression grew darker.

"We should call off the engagement. My family can't afford this kind of disgrace," Dean said before he turned around.

Opal grabbed his sleeve, her eyes red. "Dean, please don't do this. It's really over between us. I swear..."

She turned and glared at me, her voice raised. "Tommy! What exactly do you want?! We've already broken up! Clinging to me like this only makes me more disgusted with you!"

As I stared at that familiar yet strange face, I felt my heart clench so tightly that I could barely breathe.

The Opal I knew would never have spoken to me that way, no matter how angry she was.

"The defendant, Sloane Lane, is found guilty of first-degree murder, and sentenced to fifteen years in prison…" Sloane collapsed to the floor, sobbing so hard she could not speak. While Zane was led away, he looked back at me. There was something in that glance. Regret, perhaps. Or relief. I did not know. I did not want to know. The judge continued. "The defendant, Zane Lane, was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to twelve years in prison." The gavel fell and the trial was over. I stood up and walked out of the courtroom. The sunlight was dazzling… - The funeral home hallway was quiet except for my footsteps and a staff member. The staff led me into a room and pointed to a cart by the wall, and said, "These are Ms. Lane's ashes." The urn was black, small, and light. I took it in both hands and held it in my arms. After leaving the funeral home, I took a cab. "Where to?" the driver asked. "The train station." - The train ride lasted

I closed the folder and asked Marcus, "When's the trial?" "Next month at the earliest," Marcus said. I nodded. Before I left, I went to the medical examiner's office. The medical examiner who met me was a young woman with glasses and a quiet voice. She led me into a small room and handed me a list. "These are Opal's belongings." On the list was a phone, a necklace, and a jacket. The phone was shattered, its screen cracked like a spiderweb. The medical examiner said it had fallen while Opal struggled on the operating table. Struggled… She had struggled on that operating table. The necklace was a thin silver chain with a small, opal pendant. I had given it to her for her eighteenth birthday. She had worn it ever since and had never taken it off. I picked up the necklace and closed my hand around it. The opal pendant warmed in my palm, as if it were responding to my touch. The jacket was hers. It was a denim jacket that had already faded from washing too many times w

Marcus continued to explain to me."Victor and Rochelle's youngest daughter, Emma Gomez, had the Rh-null blood type. Unfortunately, she had dilated cardiomyopathy. It meant that the heart had gotten bigger and could not pump blood properly. "She needed a heart transplant. However, they had waited three years without finding a suitable donor." Marcus then tapped his fingers lightly against the table. "Opal was in a minor car accident and taken to the hospital. A routine blood test showed that she had Rh-null blood. "Somehow, the Gomezes found out and got a detailed compatibility report for Opal. Her heart was a perfect match. Fewer than ten people in the world would have been compatible. "Victor's family approached Opal's adoptive parents. They offered three hundred thousand dollars. In exchange, her adoptive parents had to cooperate with the fake reunion, let Victor and Rochelle take her away, and sign an organ donation consent form." His fingers stopped. "They signed it

The basement was a wine cellar. That was what the first search had concluded. But this time, the officers went downstairs and didn't come back for a long while. Marcus's radio crackled. "Captain, you need to come down and see this." The tremor in the officer's voice told me something was wrong. Marcus walked toward the basement entrance, and I followed him down the stairs. The staircase was long, the lights were dim, and the walls were cold. The air grew colder with every step. It was not the natural chill of a basement. It was a different kind of cold. It was something that came from machines… Something artificial. It was cold air from refrigeration. Someone was running some sort of powerful cooling equipment down here. There was a door at the bottom of the stairs, and it was already opened. An officer waited in the doorway, his face pale. I walked inside. The basement was huge, even larger than the living room above. Wine racks lined the walls and were filled

The instant "Opal" took the glass, someone else's hand entered the edge of the frame. It held another glass. The angle made it almost impossible to see without enlarging the image. "Someone was switching her glass," the technician said, "every single time." Marcus stared at the screen without speaking. In the distance, red and blue lights drew closer through the darkness. Backup had finally arrived. Three police cars stopped outside the manor house and their doors opened at the same time. A dozen or so officers climbed out. The officer in charge ran over. "Captain, what are your orders?" Marcus turned toward the people outside the mansion. "Secure everyone at the scene. Question them separately. Don't let them communicate. Search the entire estate. Every room and every corner. Keep your eyes open." "One more thing." He paused. "Contact headquarters and have them deliver a FINDER over." FINDER, or "Finding Individuals for Disaster and Emergency Response", was a device

Everyone fell silent for a moment. The silence was so unnatural that even the wind seemed to stop. Then all hell broke loose. "What is the meaning of this?" Victor's expression froze. "Captain, what's this supposed to mean?!" Rochelle pulled her husband's arm with startling speed, a reaction that did not fit her status as a wealthy lady. She said nothing, but her eyes changed. It was not fear, but it was calculation, as if she were quickly deciding whether there was still a way out. Opal stood perfectly still. Unlike the others, she showed no surprise or anger. She simply stood there, her expression calm… Too calm. So calm that it looked unnatural. Dean reacted first. He shook off Opal's hand, his voice rising. "No! Arrest her! Why are you arresting me? I have nothing to do with this! I don't know anything!" No one paid him any attention. Marcus gripped my phone, his gaze moving from Victor to Rochelle, then from Rochelle to Opal. He said nothing else. He was wait
