Chapter 4

The Weight of a Promise

The second morning arrived colder than the first.

I woke alone.

The space beside me still held the shape of Kael’s body and the lingering heat of his skin, but he was already gone. A folded note rested on the pillow where his head had been.

Stay in the wing. I will return before midday. —K

The handwriting was sharp, controlled, exactly like the man himself.

I sat up slowly. My body ached in quiet places—not from anything he had done, but from the constant tension of the last two days. The green dress from yesterday lay neatly over a chair. Someone had entered while I slept and left fresh clothes: a soft gray tunic and dark trousers that would fit without drawing too much attention to the fullness of my figure. I dressed, washed my face, and stood for a long time at the balcony doors, watching the training grounds below.

Warriors moved in precise formations. Their shouts carried faintly upward. Power lived in every motion. My own wolf stirred weakly, as if she could feel the strength surrounding us and wished she still possessed some of it.

A soft knock came at the door.

Liora entered carrying a breakfast tray. She set it down, then hesitated.

“The Alpha instructed that you eat properly today,” she said. “He noticed you barely touched food last night.”

I managed a small nod. “Thank you.”

She lingered a moment longer, as though deciding whether to speak. Finally she said, “There is talk in the lower halls. Jason Blackwood is expected before nightfall.”

My stomach tightened. “Does everyone know?”

“Most. News travels quickly when it involves the Alpha’s new mate and his nephew.” Her eyes flicked to the crescent pendant at my throat. “Some are curious. Some are unkind. Keep that in mind if you are given leave to walk the grounds.”

She left without waiting for a reply.

I forced myself to eat. Bread, fruit, a little of the spiced meat. The tea was strong and dark. When I finished, I moved through the private rooms restlessly—sitting room, small library, balcony again. Time stretched. Every distant sound made my shoulders tense.

Mid-morning brought another visitor.

Kael entered without knocking. He wore black training clothes, a light sheen of sweat still on his neck, as though he had come straight from the yard. His gaze swept over me once, checking, assessing.

“You ate.”

“Yes.”

“Good.” He closed the door. “Jason will arrive before sunset. He brings a small escort. Officially it is a family visit. Unofficially he intends to reclaim you.”

I folded my arms. “And you still refuse.”

“I do.” He walked closer until only a few steps separated us. “I spoke with my Betas this morning. The majority support the claim. Your presence has kept my wolf stable for two full days and nights. That is not something this pack will lightly discard.”

“And the ones who do not support it?”

“They will learn to.” His voice held no doubt. “You will stand beside me when he arrives. You will not leave my side. If he addresses you directly, you may answer, but you will not go with him.”

The order settled over me like a second binding.

I looked up at him. “What if I want to hear him out?”

Kael’s expression did not change, yet something colder moved behind his eyes. “You may hear every word. Then you will remember the thirteen years of silence and the woman he kept while you waited. After that, you will remain exactly where you are.”

He reached out and brushed his thumb across the silver line on my palm—the place where our blood had mixed. The touch was light, almost absent-minded, yet it sent a slow current up my arm.

“My wolf is quieter when I can feel you,” he said, voice lower. “That is not a small thing, Elara. Do not ask me to give it up.”

I had no answer that felt safe.

He released my hand. “There will be a formal reception in the great hall at dusk. Dress accordingly. Liora will bring options.”

He left as abruptly as he had arrived.

The afternoon passed in a strange, suspended quiet. Liora returned with three dresses. I chose the simplest—deep blue, long-sleeved, fitted enough to show I was no longer a child but not so tight that it invited comment. She helped me with my hair, twisting it into a low knot that left my neck bare. The crescent pendant remained where it had always been.

When the light outside began to soften toward evening, two warriors appeared at the door. They escorted me down the long corridors in silence. The great hall was already filling. Pack members stood in ordered groups. The high table had been prepared. Kael waited at the base of the short steps leading to it, dressed in black once more, the Alpha’s mark visible at his throat.

He offered his arm. I took it.

We walked together to the high table. He seated me at his right, then remained standing. The hall quieted.

“Jason Blackwood approaches the gates,” one of the Betas announced from the doorway.

A ripple moved through the gathered wolves.

Minutes later the heavy doors opened.

Jason entered with four warriors at his back.

I had not seen him in thirteen years. The boy I remembered was gone. In his place stood a man of twenty-five, tall and well-built, with the same bright eyes and the same easy carriage. His hair was lighter than Kael’s, his expression open and determined. When his gaze found me, something complicated flashed across his face—recognition, guilt, and a sharp, sudden hunger.

He stopped several paces from the high table and inclined his head to Kael first.

“Uncle.”

“Nephew.” Kael’s voice was mild. “You come with purpose.”

Jason’s eyes returned to me. “I come for what is mine.”

The words landed hard. Around the hall, wolves shifted.

Kael rested one hand on the back of my chair, a clear, public claim. “Explain.”

Jason took a step closer. “Elara saved my life when we were children. I made her a promise that I would marry her when we came of age. I failed to honor that promise in time. I am here to correct the failure.”

He looked directly at me now. “Elara. I am sorry. I was young and careless and I let other voices convince me the debt could wait. I never stopped thinking of you. When I learned you had come here… when I learned what had happened… I came as soon as I could.”

My throat felt tight. The years of letters, the gifts I had sent, the quiet hope I had carried—all of it rose at once.

Kael spoke before I could. “You kept another woman in your bed while this one waited. That is not the behavior of a man who never stopped thinking of her.”

Jason’s jaw tightened. “That woman is gone. She sold information she should never have possessed. I ended the arrangement the moment I learned of her betrayal. The promise I made to Elara remains.”

He took another step. “I ask that you release her, Uncle. Let her come with me so I may keep my word at last.”

The hall waited.

Kael’s fingers curled once against the wood of my chair. “No.”

Jason’s eyes narrowed. “She is not a possession to be claimed because your wolf finally found silence.”

“She is my mate,” Kael answered, voice still quiet. “The rites were completed. Blood was shared. The pack has witnessed. You are two days too late.”

Jason looked at me again, something almost desperate in his expression. “Elara. Tell him you want to leave. Tell him the promise was between us. I will take you home. I will make this right.”

Every eye turned toward me.

I felt the weight of them—the pack’s curiosity, Kael’s steady presence at my side, Jason’s open hand held out as though the past thirteen years could be erased with a single decision.

My voice, when it came, was smaller than I wanted.

“I waited,” I said. “I sent you everything I had. I believed you.”

Jason’s face softened. “I know. Let me fix it.”

Kael’s hand moved from the chair to my shoulder, warm and heavy. The simple contact sent a wave of unnatural calm through my restless wolf. I felt the tension in my body ease against my will.

I looked at Jason. Then I looked up at the man who had married me under false identity and refused to let go.

“I need time,” I said finally. “I cannot answer you tonight.”

It was not the declaration either man wanted. It was the only truth I possessed.

Jason’s outstretched hand slowly lowered. Disappointment and something sharper crossed his face. “Then I will wait. I will remain in Blackwood territory until you decide.”

Kael’s voice cut across the hall, cold and final. “You will be given guest quarters. You will not approach my mate without my presence. Any attempt to take her from these grounds will be treated as a challenge to the Alpha.”

The threat was clear.

Jason held his uncle’s gaze for a long moment, then inclined his head once. “As you say.”

He turned and left with his escort. The doors closed behind them.

The hall remained silent until Kael dismissed the gathering with a short gesture. Wolves filed out in quiet groups. When only the two of us and a handful of guards remained, Kael drew me to my feet.

We walked back to the Alpha’s wing in silence. Inside the chambers he released my arm and moved to the window, staring out at the darkening grounds.

“You did not choose him,” he said without turning.

“I did not choose you either.”

He glanced over his shoulder. A faint, humorless curve touched his mouth. “No. You did not.”

He crossed the room and stopped in front of me. This close, the difference in our sizes felt overwhelming. He lifted one hand and rested it against the side of my neck, thumb brushing the pulse point beneath my ear. The touch was deliberate. My wolf went still almost at once.

“I will not force the rest of the bond tonight,” he said quietly. “But I will not pretend this is temporary. Jason will stay. He will try to pull you with soft words and old memories. Every time he does, I want you to remember how quiet it is here.” He pressed his palm a fraction more firmly against my skin. “This silence is rare. I will not give it up. And I will not give you up.”

His hand slid from my neck to the back of my head. For a moment I thought he might kiss me. Instead he only rested his forehead lightly against mine, breathing in as though the scent of me steadied something deep inside him.

“Sleep,” he murmured. “Tomorrow the real fight begins.”

He stepped away, extinguished the lamps, and stretched out on the bed. After a moment I followed. This time when his arm settled across my waist there was no pretense of distance.

Outside, somewhere in the guest wing, Jason Blackwood sat awake, staring at the same moon that had watched me drink poison for him thirteen years earlier.

And in the dark, with Kael’s steady heartbeat against my back

, I realized the most dangerous truth of all:

Part of me no longer wanted to be saved.

  • She tamed the untouchable alpha    The Poison

Chapter 1The PoisonThe first time I tasted death, it was sweet.I was nine years old, barefoot in the kitchen of our small pack house, when I saw the glass. It sat on the wooden table like any other cup of milk, pale and innocent under the late afternoon light. Jason stood beside it, laughing at something my father had said. He was twelve, already tall for his age, with bright eyes and the easy confidence of a future Alpha’s son. I adored him the way little girls sometimes adore older boys who are kind to them. He never mocked my soft voice or the way I trailed after him like a shadow.I did not know the glass held poison. My stepmother had prepared it. She moved through the kitchen with quiet purpose, her smile too sharp at the edges. I remember the way her eyes flicked toward Jason and then toward the door, as if measuring how long it would take for someone to notice. My father had stepped outside to speak with the Beta. The house felt strangely empty.Jason reached for the glass.
