Chapter 1

Author: Small Sept
Not only was Cecilia Shaw completely unfazed, but she even pointed straight at my face and started yelling, "Report this to the highway patrol? Who are you trying to scare?"

Her freshly manicured finger nearly poked me in the eye.

"You broke bastard, do you even know what car this is?

"It's a G-Wagon with a price tag over six million dollars and fully made from carbon fiber—a custom limited edition! I bet you've never even heard of something like it in your life!"

She brushed the dust off her hands with a disgusted look. Her high heels clacked as she took two steps back, afraid the sticky sheep's blood on the ground would stain her expensive shoes.

"It's these disgusting sheep of yours that completely wrecked my front bumper and the factory paint. You should be worrying about my repair costs! Even if I harvested and sold all your organs, you still couldn't afford one of my headlights!"

Those who knew nothing about the law often mistook wealth for immunity. It gave them confidence. What was truly fascinating was why so many of the nouveau riche believed money placed them above traffic laws.

"Ms. Shaw, I'll repeat this one last time—this is Summit Highway. The entire highway is currently closed in both directions."

I raised my hand and pointed ahead.

In the middle of the road, the red-and-white barricade that the G-Wagon had smashed through lay broken in two, surrounded by a pool of blood, and a jarring set of black skid marks stretched more than 30 feet across the asphalt.

"You deliberately drove through a roadblock. The traffic regulations are perfectly clear, and what you did is considered endangering public safety.

"Once the highway patrol are done investigating the scene, there will be no dispute in assigning liability. You'll bear full responsibility. As for the sheep you killed, you'll compensate me for every single one at full value," I said plainly.

"Bear full responsibility?" Keith Jameson, the male assistant standing behind Cecilia, couldn't hold back his laughter. "So, the country hick memorized a few pages of the traffic handbook and now thinks he's some big-shot lawyer?"

He stepped forward and spat on one of the dead sheep. "Do you have any idea how valuable Ms. Shaw's time is? It costs hundreds of thousands every minute.

"Forget this lousy mountain road in the middle of nowhere—even if it were an expressway in the city, Ms. Shaw would just drive straight through.

"So what if a few livestock got run over? What, are we supposed to hold a funeral for them?"

The two of them played off each other in perfect harmony, perfectly demonstrating their belief that the strong could do whatever they pleased.

Cecilia held her chin high. Her wavy curls whipped wildly in the wind. She was every bit the picture of arrogant superiority.

"It's fine. Let him report us. Might as well call 911 while you're at it.

"I'm not backing down. I'd love to see if they're actually brave enough to seize my car, or whether they arrest you first for trying to scam me!"

She unzipped her Hermes handbag, took out a disinfectant wipe, and carefully cleaned the fingertips that had touched the dust on her car.

"And a friendly reminder—those dead, ordinary sheep aren't worth much. At best, they sell for a few dozen bucks a pound. Even if every one of them died, they're only worth a few tens of thousands.

"But my car? Once the damage has been assessed at the factory, the repair estimate won't be less than a million dollars."

Cecilia flung the filthy wipe straight at my face. "Get on your knees and apologize. Then, lick my car clean. If you please me, I might just spare you."

She snorted coldly, continuing, "Otherwise, you can spend the rest of your life praying for those sheep from a prison cell."

William's lips parted in a frantic quiver. He managed to choke out two broken whimpers before his eyes rolled back and he collapsed on the ground, completely still.Over in the corner, Cecilia, who had been curled into a ball this entire time, finally reacted. She stared at her unconscious father, then turned her head to look at me."Ms. Shaw, before I came here, I made it a point to look through the penal code," I said, gazing down at her. "Inciting a public disturbance, colluding with gangs to endanger public safety, plus a 15-million-dollar extortion attempt…"Cecilia's teeth chattered nonstop. She scrambled further back into the corner, pressing herself flat against the wall."Stack those charges together, and you're looking at ten years minimum," I remarked, doing the math for her."Once you're inside… You know, the sheep pens at the prison's farm just happen to be short-handed. Shoveling manure for a few years should teach you your place."Cecilia completely broke down at t

Cecilia could still picture the brutal scene of Bennett being dragged away just moments ago. As stupid as she was, she now understood she had caused a catastrophic disaster. She racked her brain, but she simply couldn't understand how a shepherd in a faded windbreaker could bring a ruthless crime lord and her own father to their knees with just a few words.I turned my head and instructed, "Mr. Shaw, educate your daughter. Tell her whose scraps your family's grocery empire has been surviving off of."William scrambled over on all fours. He then grabbed a fistful of Cecilia's hair and dragged her out of the corner."You wretched jinx! I'm going to kill you!" he yelled, shaking his fists violently. With tears and snot smeared all over his face, William pointed at me and roared at Cecilia, "Our family's cold-chain distribution, our top-ten national warehouses, and 80% of the premium inventory on the market—it all belongs to Kredo Consortium! That was a business opportunity they gave

Feeling reassured by his connections, Bennett seemed to regain some of his confidence.I paid no attention to the Shaws and turned to look at Bennett. "A well-connected local, huh?"I fished out my phone. The screen had been shattered, but I could still make calls at least.I dialed a number, and after just one ring, the call was answered."What's the name of the guy who runs this area's gravel business?" I asked, tilting my head slightly. "Quinton Jones, right?"After a short pause, I spoke directly into the phone. "Shut down every single one of his projects. Right now!"Bennett had been a little uneasy at first, but after hearing what I said, he burst out laughing."Dude, did watching too many movies turn you stupid? You seriously think you can ruin Quinton with just one phone call?"Bennett raised his cuffed wrists and shook them, making the iron chains clink. "Quinton has connections all the way up to the FBI. You'll never be able to reach his level in your life—"Just the

All of a sudden, hurried footsteps echoed from the end of the hallway. In just two hours, William had pulled every string he could and even chartered a private jet to rush over. He stumbled into the lobby of the police station looking disheveled—his suit was buttoned crookedly, and one of his shoes was missing. He looked like he had just been fished out of the water. Two female officers were escorting Cecilia out of the interrogation room and toward the holding cells. The moment Cecilia saw William, her arrogant attitude instantly gave way to a look of grievance. She wailed loudly and rushed toward him."Dad! You're finally here!"She cried so hard that she could barely catch her breath. The handcuffs on her wrists clinked as she pointed toward the couch in the hallway, half-hidden in the shadows due to one of the motion-sensor lights going out."It's that broke shepherd! He bought off these cops and set me up! Dad, get someone to cripple him! I'll never get over this humiliati

William's hoarse roar was cut off abruptly, for the video call was forcibly disconnected.Only the sound of the wind sweeping through the wide-open highway could be heard. The bystanders looked at each other in confusion, and even Bennett's men loosened their hold on me without realizing it.Cecilia clutched her phone, staring blankly at the dark screen.Bennett ducked his chin into his collar and turned to ask her, "Ms. Cecilia, what's going on with Mr. Shaw? Why'd he tell us to let him go?"Cecilia rolled her eyes, then raised her chin smugly again. "Dad was just confused because he was angry! He couldn't see clearly through the screen and thought you were beating my friend."Didn't you hear him say he's chartering a flight here? He must be bringing over elite bodyguards from Eastport to personally teach this filthy beggar a lesson!"Keith immediately chimed in from the side, "Don't worry, Bennett. Mr. Shaw is extremely protective of his own."Since someone dared to mess with

Amid the crowd's horrified cries, the van slammed on the brakes, coming to a stop inches from my legs."You've got guts! Break one of his legs. Teach him how things work around here," Bennett said.Under his command, his men closed in around me. With no time even to react, a steel pipe crashed into my back.A dull thud rang out, and I staggered forward. But before I could steady myself, several burly men lunged toward me and pinned me down hard against the rough asphalt. The coarse gravel scraped my cheek open, causing blood to trickle down my chin and drip onto the ground."Go ahead and call the cops! Weren't you acting like a big shot just now?" Bennett mocked. He walked over and stomped on the satellite phone I had dropped, shattering it to pieces.Cecilia stepped forward, crouched down in front of me, and patted my cheek. She laughed so hard that her shoulders shook."What happened to your tough act from a minute ago? What about the ten million dollars? Go on, keep talking!
