Chapter 9

Penulis: Peachy
Three months later, with Caleb’s devoted care, I gave birth to twin daughters.

“Look at them. They’re so beautiful,” Caleb whispered, gently stroking the faces of little Aria and Sol, his eyes filled with love.

Aria had my silver eyes, and Sol had Caleb’s gold.

Both of them had tiny, fuzzy bear ears atop their heads, and their fingernails weren't normal, but rather small, rounded claws with a pearly sheen.

From the moment they were born, they displayed an astonishing gift for magic. Aria could make flowers bloom with a touch, while Sol could create orbs of warm, gentle light.

“They will change the world,” the elven elder Eilwen prophesied. “The birth of the Twin Bridges heralds a new age.”

She was right.

In the years that followed, the inter-species alliance that Caleb and I had founded grew and strengthened.

Dragons, elves, werewolves, and shifters began to truly cooperate, governing the lands together.

My own contribution was to design the Interspecies Community Center.

“Because you sacrificed innocents, not the pure,” said High Judge Morwyn, his voice heavy with ancient sorrow. “Purity isn't the absence of a stain. It's the courage to walk through darkness and not be tainted by it.”Trina stared at him, uncomprehending. “What does that mean?”“It means you were tricked from the very beginning,” I said coldly. “That mermaid never intended for you to succeed. She just wanted you to kill.”“No!” Trina clutched the ghost-child to her chest. “My baby is perfect! It will…”Before she could finish, the black mist lunged forward, its gaping mouth sinking its rotten teeth into Trina’s neck.“Aaargh!” Trina’s scream was cut short. We watched in horror as the Soul-Eater began to drain her. Her body withered at a visible rate, her skin turning translucent as the blood was sucked from her veins.“Help… me…” she whispered, reaching a hand toward me.But no one moved. To touch that thing was to be consumed.Three minutes later, Trina and her “masterpiece” dissolved

The ghostly wails from the black vortex grew louder, and I felt my unborn twins stirring restlessly inside me.“Get Helena out of here!” Queen Elaria shouted to Caleb.“No,” I said, gripping Caleb’s arm. “We can’t just leave everyone.”Caleb’s guardian sigil flared brighter, the golden shield around us solidifying. “Then stay right by my side.”Unlike the cold indifference of Calvin in my vision, Caleb glanced at me every few seconds, his eyes filled with a warmth and concern that gave me strength.“Aaargh!” Trina’s scream echoed from the center of the clearing. “Come out and feast! Feast on this world and tear it apart!”“She’s lost her mind,” Methuselah, the dragon elder, gritted out. “We have to stop her!”But no one dared get close. Countless decaying hands were now reaching out from the vortex, grasping for anything living.“I have to see,” I told Caleb.“No, it’s too dangerous.”“The power inside me will protect me,” I insisted. “And… I need to know what she’s done.”Shielded by

“Twins?” I stared at the ultrasound monitor in disbelief.“It’s more than that,” said Lyralei, the elven physician, her eyes wide with wonder. “The life within your womb possesses an extremely rare ‘twin-souled’ magical signature. This is a sign of immense good fortune. A blessing we haven't seen in a human-supernatural pairing for over a thousand years.”I felt a warm pulse in my belly, and a wave of maternal protectiveness washed over me, stronger than anything I’d ever felt.“What does that mean?” Caleb asked, squeezing my hand.“Twins represent balance and harmony,” Lyralei explained. “They will be born with the innate ability to harmonize different types of magical energy. The prophecies call them the ‘Children of the Bridge.’”As we walked out of the clinic, Caleb stopped.“Helena, there’s something I have to tell you,” he said, turning to me with a complicated look in his eyes. “About who I really am.”“You’re the leader of the bear-shifters, right?”"There's more," Caleb said,

“Helena, please, you have to help me!”A month later, Trina was kneeling on my doorstep in the middle of the night, drenched by the rain and covered in bruises. Her left eye was swollen shut. Dried blood caked the corner of her mouth, and her once-perfect makeup was a ruin of smeared lines.I stared at her through the warded glass, not moving to open the door.“Please!” Trina slammed her fists against the door. “I was wrong! I know I was wrong!”Caleb came down the stairs, his brow furrowed. “Helena, want me to handle this?”“No,” I said, unlocking the door and looking down at my sister. “Tell me. What did Calvin do to you this time?”Trina scrambled to her feet and tried to hug me, but I pushed her away. She stumbled back, her eyes full of desperation. “He locked me in the cellar for three days! He said I ruined everything for him!”“You did,” I said without a trace of sympathy. “What else?”“He won’t let me see anyone. He cut off all my access to the outside world. He took my phon

"Get this monster out of here!"Calvin's roar shook the crystal chandelier.I watched him erupt, a cold sneer twisting my lips. Just like in my vision, I thought. Pride. It was the only thing he ever truly cared for.“Calvin, he’s your son!” Trina clutched the frail infant, her voice as sharp as shattering glass.“My son?” Calvin grabbed a fistful of Trina’s hair and dragged her close. “How could the blood of a Blackwood produce such a… thing?”The baby was… wrong. Its skin was a sickly, blue-tinged white, and a fine web of tiny scales shimmered where the sunlight touched it.Worse, its attempts to shift were a mangled, agonizing failure.Every attempt ended in a pained, guttural screech.“It doesn’t matter what’s wrong with him. You don’t get to abandon him.” Caleb’s voice was a low growl as he strode toward Calvin.“And who the hell are you to meddle in my family’s affairs?” Calvin shoved Trina aside and turned on Caleb, his eyes flashing with a wolf’s golden light.Caleb didn’t f
