Chapter 1

"Victoria? Victoria, snap out of it. It's time to get that patent submitted!" Connor Rachlin, my husband, urged me.

His childhood sweetheart, Juniper Young, flashed me a smile. "That's right, Victoria. I'm about to hand in mine as well. Should I help you submit yours?"

I looked around. There I was, surrounded by my colleagues in the familiar research institute. Dazed, I soon realized I had been reborn.

I walked past Connor and Juniper, grabbed the patent manuscript with data I had accumulated over the years, and headed out. "No, thanks. I can do it myself."

Connor called out to me, audibly upset. "What do you think you're doing, Victoria? Juni was just trying to do you a favor. You didn't have to embarrass her like that."

With feigned pity, Juniper chimed in. "Yeah, Victoria. You don't have to get all hostile toward me."

I paused in my tracks. "You're reading too much into this. I just remembered I have some data that needs amending."

Connor let out a deep sigh. "Okay. Hurry up, then. Time is running out."

I shut the door and stared at the research data I had poured my heart into in my previous life. My hard work had ended up as a stepping stone for his luxurious life.

Bitterness and anger surged through me.

In my previous life, Connor had turned his back on me. He reported me for falsifying data, accusing me of attempting to cheat the government out of a fortune in patent royalties as soon as I submitted the patent.

Overnight, I went from being a celebrated genius researcher to a thief and liar hated by everyone. Meanwhile, he and Juniper were praised as brave whistleblowers and national heroes.

When she publicly accused me of theft and plagiarism, my very own husband took her side, acting heartbroken and disappointed.

"We have proof! What else can you say for yourself? You can't do something as serious as this just because you're jealous of Juni, Victoria!" he berated.

My colleagues at the research institute avoided me like the plague. Each one of them turned against me, pointing fingers and throwing accusations.

"I knew something was off! Her data always looked exactly as mine! Turns out she's been plagiarizing my work!"

"And we said she was kind enough to guide us. What a joke. She probably stole our work to take all the credit for herself!"

"How shameless of her, pretending to help while actually being a thief."

No matter how I tried to explain, my voice was drowned out by their angry yelling.

Connor pointed at me self-righteously and accused me, "You've always been jealous of Juni for being well-educated, but I can't believe you were bold enough to steal her hard work. What are you going to do next? Embezzle state funds?"

"The country invests in us for innovation, not to raise leeches like you!"

"Yeah! You don't deserve to be one of us anymore!"

I couldn't defend myself. Nobody bothered to hear me out.

My colleagues, driven by rage, ganged up on me and beat me so badly that I was rushed to the hospital from massive blood loss.

My parents sold our house and land to pay for my treatment, even borrowing money from every relative and friend they could find. They became haggard overnight.

In the end, I still passed away on the operating table. The doctors couldn't save me.

My parents, branded as the family of a criminal, were harassed and cornered by society until they were driven to their deaths.

After I died, Connor and Juniper successfully claimed my patent as their own and took the credit. With the endless patient royalties, they bought a house in the city, drove a shiny new car, and lived a marvelous life.

My hands clenched into fists as I remembered the details of my past.

This time, I didn't plan on submitting my patent. Instead, I arrived at a nearby pigsty, pulled out the manuscript, and tossed it in.

My hard work got mixed in with pig slop and eaten by the pigs. For once, I actually felt a sense of satisfaction.

Now that I had been reborn, I wasn't about to let history repeat itself. I couldn't wait to see how they were going to accuse me of stealing this time now that the evidence had been destroyed.

Composed, I returned to the research institute.

Connor and Juniper kept peeking toward the main entrance. When they saw me, Connor grabbed me and asked me to help check some data, while Juniper quietly slipped out the door.

I curled my lips in a sarcastic smile. How would the calculative Juniper find my manuscripts now that they were eaten by the pigs? Turn the pigsty upside down?

Jared had always been interested in the patent I was developing. Whenever there was any progress, I made sure to report to him right away.First, so he could keep track of the overall progress. Second, so he could help me out as much as possible. The last time I gave him an update was a week ago. By then, most of the research data was basically finalized. The key results were confirmed, and only the finishing touches were left. Then, a couple of days ago, Connor swapped my original manuscript. In other words, besides me and him, Jared already knew about the data back then.Connor thought he was clever, replacing my real manuscript with a fake one, but he didn't realize that Jared had already gone through all the content from my original manuscript. His knowledge of my research data became solid proof that I developed everything on my own.By some twist of fate, I ended up destroying the fake manuscript, while Connor had the real one in his hands. Without Jared's intervention, that

Connor came over to me and tugged at the corner of my shirt, trying to make a case. "I was acting impulsive earlier, Victoria. I don't actually want to divorce you! You know how I am; I've always been good to you!"I swear, it was just the adrenaline that made me say such an impulsive, stupid thing! Please, Victoria, forgive me!"I glared at him icily, then flung off his hand. "Have some dignity, Connor. First, you announced a divorce. Then, you blamed it on your adrenaline. Do you think this is some kind of joke?"Before he could say anything else, I turned to Jared. "Dr. Harrison, since you're here, why don't you be our witness? Connor and I have agreed to a divorce. From this point on, we'll have nothing to do with each other!"Jared responded with a small nod of acknowledgement.Connor visibly deflated, the smugness melting right off his face. "Victoria… Why are you being so cruel to me? We were doing fine before all this…"Cruel? We must've been living in different realities

"What are you talking about?" Juniper asked, confused. She was initially startled, then gently looped an arm around Lucas'. "Come on, Lucas. You're not seeing this right. How could I have misled you guys? I know I was wrong earlier, but there must be a misunderstanding—"Lucas shook her off without hesitation, glaring at her as she fell to the ground. "You think we're all idiots? Do you get a kick out of playing everyone like fools? Huh?"Everyone froze in shock. Only Connor rushed over to help Juniper up.He glared at Lucas and snapped, "Hey, Lucas! Juni's always been good to you! You know she's not in great health, so why would you push her like that?"Lucas chuckled coldly. "Are you sympathizing with her? At least ask what she's done before you do that!"As everyone exchanged confused glances, he turned to me and solemnly apologized, "I'm truly sorry, Victoria. I was blind and wrongly accused you. Please accept my apology. I hope we can move past this."Although I was surpris

"What?" Among a sea of surprised looks, only Juniper's expression paled with panic. Connor was also stunned.Hector pressed further, "Dr. Harrison, if it wasn't Victoria, who could it be? If Connor has been the one safekeeping the master keys, then—""It wasn't me!" Connor exclaimed. "Why would it be me?"Jared took a sip of the coffee and nodded. "Yeah, it wasn't him."Connor heaved a sigh of relief, but before he could relax, his breath caught in his throat."Because the culprit is Juniper Young," Jared added. The crowd turned to Juniper in disbelief. "What? Seriously?"She looked extremely helpless and caught off guard. With a sheepish smile, she carefully asked, "Are you perhaps mistaken, Dr. Harrison? How could it be me?""That's right, Dr. Harrison," Connor said anxiously. "Juni has always been kind and helpful. Are you mistaken?"Jared let out a cold laugh. "Mistaken? Hardly."Then, he pushed a photo forward, rendering everyone at the scene shocked. "Oh my gosh. It was

"Dr. Harrison?" The initially dazed Hector quickly put on a smile as he welcomed our director, Jared Harrison. "Dr. Harrison, you're back. I thought you'd be attending the conference for a couple of days."Jared's expression was grim as he slammed a document onto the table. "Good thing I came back just in time to stop all hell from breaking loose."The room instantly fell silent. The colleagues who had been yanking on my collar quietly let go.Jared strode over, helped me to my feet, and turned to glare sharply at those who had shoved me."Well? What did she ever do to you to deserve this kind of treatment?" he questioned. "She's always helped you guys, and this is how you repay her? If I didn't know better, I would've thought you guys were thugs!"No one dared say a word, except for Juniper, who stepped forward with a smile. She said, "Dr. Harrison, don't let her fool you. She's just a plagiarist who steals other people's work. Not only did she steal my research data, she sabot

I tried to explain myself. "Guys, that's not it. Hear me out—"However, one of the researchers, Lucas Lambert, cut me off. "We have proof! What else can you say for yourself? You can't just steal Juniper's patent just because you're jealous of her!"We've all been so nice to you. How could you do this to us? Gosh, you're so fake and ungrateful. You're no genius; you're just a shameless thief!"I looked at those accusing me in disbelief. Some were people I had personally helped get promoted, others I often lent a hand to. When they couldn't get their data right, I analyzed it. When they were too busy to go home, I took care of their families. Now, thanks to Juniper's accusations, everyone has turned their backs on me. She was smug as ever. Meanwhile, Connor couldn't even look me in the eye.I was heartbroken and barely managed to say, "Is that how you all think of me?"Suddenly, the door flung open, and my superior, Hector Link, walked in.He said, "How else should we think of yo
