Se connecterALINA
My maid arranged the lace sleeves of my wedding gown for the third time. She put string of pearls around my neck, the coolness of the beads heavy against my skin.
"You look beautiful, signorina," she whispered.
I gave her a weak smile, my heart hammering too loudly to say thank you. My reflection in the mirror looked like someone else.
The dress was beautiful, a classic white gown that tight around my waist and flared out at my hips.
The door was pushed open and Valentina burst through the door. She looked stunning in her red dress, but her face was white with worry.
She had tried to convince me to cancel the wedding for two days now. I had refused.
“Out,” she said, waving a hand at the maid.
The girl stopped, but I nodded, and she ran out.
“Alina, are you serious about this?” Valentina grabbed my shoulders, shaking me lightly. “Do you know what you’re doing?”
“I’m walking down that aisle and marrying Luca,” I said, though my heart was racing. Luca and I had settled on a date the same day he'd made the decision.
The wedding had been easy enough to arrange. Only his family were coming. We wanted it to be a surprise to the world even though I was sure by now that a lot of people knew.
“Do you have any idea what people call him? The Monster. And you’re marrying him.“You don’t have to do this.” She gripped my hands tighter. “We’ll figure something else out. We always do.”
“No,” I said, shaking my head. “We don’t. This is the only way to protect you, Adriano, and Mama. You know that.”
She groaned and threw her hands in the air. “You’re unbelievable. You always have to play the hero.”
“I’m not the hero,” I said, looking at her sharply. “I’m the survivor.”
Valentina was married. To a man she loved with no ties to the Mafia. Father had been mad as hell. But what that meant was that she really couldn't help me, or us. She was just as much in danger as the rest of us.
Her face softened, and she hugged me tight. “You make a beautiful bride, sorellina,” she whispered, kissing my cheek. Then she stepped back, fixing a stray curl. “Even if you’re marrying a lunatic. You’re so brave, but I hate that you have to be.”
I almost laughed, but the knock on the door stopped me.
“Alina,” Angelo’s voice came through the wood, smooth and sharp. “It’s time.”
Valentina gave me a look, half worried, half proud, before slipping out. Angelo stepped in, all polished charm in his tailored suit.
He was walking me down the aisle. After Roberto had slapped me, I had refused him to stand in for my father.
“You’re stunning,” he said, offering his arm. His smile was warm, but his eyes were sharp and dark. They reminded me of my father's.
I slid my hand into the crook of his arm. “Thank you, zio.”
He chuckled as we walked, his hold on my arm firm. “Don’t thank me, ragazza. I’m just here to see you off.”
His words hurt, but I kept my eyes ahead. I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of knowing he got to me.
The garden was breathtaking. Rows of white chairs, a canopy of flowers, and soft music filled the air. But I hardly noticed. All I could see was Luca, standing at the end of the aisle.
He was too handsome in his black suit. His dark hair was gelled back, and his sharp jaw was set like stone. But his eyes were what held me.
Dark, intense. Beautiful
Behind him stood Marco, grinning like he’d just won a bet. Having the Costa wealth at his disposal would make anyone grin like that. Greedy bastard.
“Smile,” Angelo hissed under his breath.
I forced a smile, my heart pounding. Every step down the aisle felt doomed. The guests were mostly strangers—Luca’s people. They watched me, their whispers audible over the music.
When we reached Luca, Angelo placed my hand in his. Luca’s hands were rough and warm. Firm like he owned me.
“Take care of her,” Angelo said. “Watch her back.”
I wondered why he cared.
Luca smiled, a sharp, almost cruel curve of his lips. “Always.”
The priest began the vows at once. We didn't want to waste a lot of time. This was not a marriage of love. This was a contract. One I had signed myself into.
“Do you, Alina Costa, take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?”
I swallowed hard, looking into Luca’s dark eyes. “I do.”
“And do you, Luca Romano, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?”
Luca’s lips curved into the faintest smile. “I do.”
The priest nodded. “Exchange your vows.”
Luca went first. “I vow to protect you. To give you my loyalty and my strength. To stand by you, no matter what.”
My throat tightened as I spoke. “I vow to be by your side. To honor our union and to face whatever comes with you.”
The moment the priest called us husband and wife, Luca leaned in, brushing his lips against my cheek. It wasn’t a kiss of love. It was possession. I felt owned.
And just like that, I was scared. Fearful of this man I had handed my life into.
The clapping was polite, and stopped immediately we turned to walk back down the aisle. Luca’s hand rested on my back, guiding me like he already owned me.
As soon as we were out of sight of the crowd, Luca turned to me. “You’ll be moving into my house tonight.”
I blinked, taken aback. I hadn't even thought that far ahead. “What?”
“Your bags are already packed,” he said, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Who the hell had packed my bags? I hadn't given that order. I scowled angrily up at him.
I opened my mouth to protest, but he raised a hand. “This isn’t going to be an argument, Alina. If you’re my wife, you live under my roof.”
My chest tightened. “I won't.”
He laughed, a wicked sound. “You don't have a choice, My Little Sunshine. You're my property now.”
Before I could say another word, he walked away, leaving me standing there.
Behind me, I heard footsteps. My mother’s voice followed. “Alina.”
I turned to face her, tears pooling in my eyes.
ALINAThe next morning, I sat in the passenger seat while Pietro drove us through the city streets toward the club. The morning traffic crawled slowly, horns blaring somewhere in the distance while people hurried across sidewalks with coffee cups and phones glued to their ears.Normal life almost felt strange after everything that had happened. Pietro glanced at me in the mirror. “Did you sleep well, Al?” Did I sleep well? After I saw Luca and the kids, sleeping was a little bit easier. “A little.” Pietro chuckled to himself, then shot me a soft look. “I figured.”“But I can’t stay home forever when I have work to do.” He nodded. “True.”I stared out the window for a moment. “And I need something normal right now.”When the car finally pulled up in front of the club, I took a slow breath before stepping out. Ethan was standing near the entrance talking to one of the staff members. The moment he saw me, he straightened immediately. “Boss.”I smiled at him. “Good morning, Ethan.”“Ho
ALINABy the time I pulled into the driveway, my eyes were still swollen from crying. I sat in the car for a moment, staring at the front door of the house. The same house that had felt so peaceful this morning. Now my chest felt tight again.I wiped my face quickly and stepped out of the car. The front door opened before I even reached the steps, and I saw Luca.He must have been watching through the window. The moment his eyes landed on me, the relaxed calm from earlier disappeared instantly. He crossed the porch in three long strides. “Alina.”I didn’t make it another step. The moment he reached me, his arms wrapped around me, pulling me tightly against his chest. And just like that, everything broke again. A sob ripped out of me before I could stop it.I buried my face in his shoulder, clutching the back of his shirt. “I almost lost her,” I cried. His arms tightened around me. “I know.”“She tried to kill herself,” I whispered, my voice shaking. “Luca… she almost died.”His hand m
ALINAI woke up to heat along my back. I kept my eyes closed and just breathed, arching my back against Luca. A month ago, mornings didn't look like this. A month ago, mornings smelled like gunpowder and tasted like fear. Now there was sunlight pressing against my eyelids.Luca’s arm was locked around my waist. Grinning, I shifted away, mostly to see what would happen. His arm tightened immediately. The corner of my lips pulled up against my will. "Luca."I tried to turn over, but he hauled me right back against his chest without even fully waking up."Not happening," he muttered, his voice still thick with sleep, the words half-buried in my hair."I haven't done anything yet.""You were about to leave me in bed.” He grunted. I laughed and finally managed to turn in his arms. His eyes were half-open, dark hair wrecked beyond repair, jaw soft with sleep. There were no calculations running behind his eyes. This was the version of him nobody got to see except me.I would never say tha
LUCA Leo was screaming, and no, he wasn't whining, or crying. He was screaming his lungs off, a sound so loud I couldn't stop the grimace on my face. His scream suggested someone had released a feral animal in the living room and he has stumbled on it. I stopped in the doorway, my keys still hanging from my fingers, and saw my son screaming "I'm a dragon!” over and over again. Maya came tearing past me a breath later, pigtails flying. "You're not a dragon! You're a lizard!" Leo whipped around like someone deeply wronged. "Dragons are not lizards!" Maya screamed back "They are!” "They are not!” I leaned against the doorframe and watched the whole disaster unfold, unable to stop the smile pulling at my lips. From the couch, Alina looked over her shoulder at me. The sun brushes her skin, lighting it beautifully. Her face was serene. "You're staring, aren't you going to stop them?” "I'm appreciating the fact that so much noise can come from such a small body.” I shook my hea
LUCAI didn't hear the shot from Ethan. I wasn't even sure where exactly he was shooting from, but one minute, Riot was huddled together with his guards, and the next second, his head jerked back. For a moment, it seemed he had tripped over something and the guards reached out to steady him. Except he didn't stop, he kept falling, his body folded in on himself like someone had pumped the life of him. Riot hit the pavement, blood pouring from his head shot wound, and flowing out onto the asphalt under him. None of the guards moved fast enough, and that was always a bad idea. They stopped and stared at him, as though they couldn't process what their eyes was showing them. I shoved open the SUV door and stepped out. The air was cold, smelled like rain and exhaust, but all I was looking at were the rooftops. My Glock was already in my hand, pointed up, and ready to shoot. Alvez was right behind me, grinning like this was his idea of a good time.Vector slid out on my side, his r
LUCAShe was quiet for a moment, searching my face. Then she nodded, tears welling in her eyes, but this time, they were good tears. “Yes.”I kissed her again, deeper this time, and she laughed against my lips. Leo came running over with grass stains on his knees, demanding juice, and Alina wiped her face quickly before scooping him into her lap. For a moment, everything felt easy.We sat together, sunlight burning my scalp while I watched the Leo and Maya run around the park. This was easy, I could do this. That was just before my phone rang. It was an unknown number and even before I answered, I could almost tell something was wrong. It was the prickle between my shoulders. It came and went, but it always came when there was danger. “Enjoying your day out, Luca?” a voice drawled on the other end.Every muscle in my body went rigid. “Who is this?”The man chuckled. “That’s a beautiful park, the boy and girl are cute. Shame if something happened to them.”My eyes shot to my men,
ALINAI stared at the diary. It was black, square, and leather. Worn, like it had been touched too many times. My fingers hovered over it.What if it was personal? What if it had things I wasn’t supposed to see?I swallowed, running my thumb along the spine. It felt strange, finding something of my
ALINAThe car ride was quiet.I sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window at the places we passed. I hadn’t been back to my father’s house since the wedding.I hadn’t planned to return in a while, but now, here I was, heading straight there. My mother had refused to clean out my father’s st
LUCAI didn’t bother looking at my father. I was too tired to argue. Too tired for the tense silence pressing down on the room.Instead, I turned to Alina, still standing in the doorway.“Come and eat,” I said. She didn’t move. She stared at my father like she was seeing a ghost, her body stiff lik
ALINAI blinked at him. What kind of stupid question was that?He was really asking if I thought he didn’t want me?I folded my arms across my chest. I thought about ignoring him, but I was too angry. “Are you serious?”Luca didn’t answer. He just stared at me like I was the one who wasn’t making s
