“I'm the one who packed your bags.” Mother said.
My tears dried up at once. Why would she do that to me? “I didn't agree to move in with Luca, Mother.”
She shook her head, smiling sadly. “In the Mafia, it doesn't matter, Alina. You will obey Luca. Whatever he says is the law to you.”
“But I have so much to do here. I must organize my father's estate. The men are already feeling restless for some direction.”
“The men will not listen to you, Alina. Not without Luca backing you. And Luca will not back you if you do not obey him. Don't you understand? He owns you now.”
I backed away from my mother, lifted my wedding dress and ran away. Her words “he owns you now” went around and around my head.
I hadn't thought this far ahead. I really hadn't expected any of this. My idea of it had been that with Luca’s name, no one would dare command me around.
But now, it seemed Luca would be giving all the commands. I need to find Pietro. If I am moving into Luca’s mansion, then he is going with me.
I don't trust Luca completely.
I find Luca by his car, talking to Marco. They stopped talking immediately I reached them. I nodded at Marco in greeting.
“I'll move into the house today, but if I do, Pietro goes with me.”
Luca ignored me, talking to Marco who looked from me to Luca, then back at me.
“Luca?” I asked sharply. I knew damned well he had heard me. How were we going to stay married if he was going to be treating me this way?
His jaw tightened, and he turned to me finally. “Sunshine, you didn't have a choice in the matter.” He said smoothly, smiling at me like I was a fly disturbing his afternoon tea.
“Luca, this marriage is a marriage of convenience, you have no right to command me or control me. I will do as I want.”
Luca smiled, though his eyes stayed dark like the devil's. “Let's not have a fight on our wedding day, eh. You're mine, Alina. You will be mine forever. We will have many more days to fight. What do you say?”
I stepped up to him, grinning when his eyes widened for a second. I tilted my head up, biting my lip gently. I felt my stomach twist when his eyes dropped to my lips and Marco stepped away from us. “I ask nicely again, my husband. Can Pietro move in with me because I swear to you, if he doesn't, I will not be going anywhere with you.”
Luca's fingers pressed under my jaw, and he lifted my face to his. He pressed his lips against mine, his tongue snaking out to suck at me gently. He hissed against my lips. “Who is Pietro?”
I closed my eyes, and sniffed the air. It smelled like Luca. It made me all hot and heady. “My father's second in command. He has always lived with us.”
Luca backed away suddenly. “What? Do you think I'll stab you while you sleep tonight?”
I missed his heat against my skin, his tough hands on my skin. I looked away. Marco was staring down at his phone, typing rapidly, the air was still. Nothing bad changed in the world but I felt like my own world had changed. “No. But I'll feel better if he's there.”
Luca opened his car door. He slid into the car and called for Marco. After a minute, he looked up at me. His brown eyes were the exact shade of honey under the sun. “Fine. But only because you asked nicely. I'll see you tonight at home. Wear something beautiful to receive me.”
Marco stepped into the front seat and they drove away. I watched him go, my heart banging against my chest. I couldn't pretend that I didn't know what he meant.
He was going to sleep with me that night. And I didn't blame him, after all that was our wedding night.
The only problem was that I didn't know anything about a wedding night. I had never had sex. Not that I was keeping my virginity for my husband, but I just hadn't found anyone I liked enough to share it with.
And I didn't think that person was Luca.
I stumbled away from the driveway and walked into the house straight to my room. Luca had asked me to wear something sexy, I didn't have anything like that.
My room was empty when I walked in. I stood for a moment at the door, completely shocked. Pietro found me there, standing by the door.
“What happened to my room?” I asked him, barely able to look at his face. How was it possible for it to be completely cleared out? It looked like whoever had done it wanted to clear my entire existence from the house.
Pietro cleared his throat. “Your mother had it cleared while you were at the wedding. I have your bags in the limousine. We can leave when you're ready.”
I fisted her hands at my sides. I felt like my head would explode at any moment from the anger boiling in my chest. My mother had no right. “Why is my room cleared?”
“She’s moved your things to a smaller room down the hallway.”
I banged the door closed, moving away from Pietro, when his hands held me back. “Leave me.” I snapped at him.
“We need to leave. You cannot make your mother angry at you. You'll need her to keep track of what happens here.”
I shook his hand away, breathed in and out for a few seconds to get myself under control, then nodded. Pietro was right. “Bring the car. We will leave now.”
By the time I left my father's house, all the guests had gone. Valentina had returned to her husband's house and Adriano to boarding school.
The closer we got to Luca's estate, the more my stomach coiled in fear. I was worried. I didn't know how to please a man in bed and Luca seemed like a man with a world of experience.
After going through all my clothes, I decided I would sleep naked under the bed. He would just have to understand that my skin was the most beautiful thing I could wear.
ALINAThe next morning, I sat in the passenger seat while Pietro drove us through the city streets toward the club. The morning traffic crawled slowly, horns blaring somewhere in the distance while people hurried across sidewalks with coffee cups and phones glued to their ears.Normal life almost felt strange after everything that had happened. Pietro glanced at me in the mirror. “Did you sleep well, Al?” Did I sleep well? After I saw Luca and the kids, sleeping was a little bit easier. “A little.” Pietro chuckled to himself, then shot me a soft look. “I figured.”“But I can’t stay home forever when I have work to do.” He nodded. “True.”I stared out the window for a moment. “And I need something normal right now.”When the car finally pulled up in front of the club, I took a slow breath before stepping out. Ethan was standing near the entrance talking to one of the staff members. The moment he saw me, he straightened immediately. “Boss.”I smiled at him. “Good morning, Ethan.”“Ho
ALINABy the time I pulled into the driveway, my eyes were still swollen from crying. I sat in the car for a moment, staring at the front door of the house. The same house that had felt so peaceful this morning. Now my chest felt tight again.I wiped my face quickly and stepped out of the car. The front door opened before I even reached the steps, and I saw Luca.He must have been watching through the window. The moment his eyes landed on me, the relaxed calm from earlier disappeared instantly. He crossed the porch in three long strides. “Alina.”I didn’t make it another step. The moment he reached me, his arms wrapped around me, pulling me tightly against his chest. And just like that, everything broke again. A sob ripped out of me before I could stop it.I buried my face in his shoulder, clutching the back of his shirt. “I almost lost her,” I cried. His arms tightened around me. “I know.”“She tried to kill herself,” I whispered, my voice shaking. “Luca… she almost died.”His hand m
ALINAI woke up to heat along my back. I kept my eyes closed and just breathed, arching my back against Luca. A month ago, mornings didn't look like this. A month ago, mornings smelled like gunpowder and tasted like fear. Now there was sunlight pressing against my eyelids.Luca’s arm was locked around my waist. Grinning, I shifted away, mostly to see what would happen. His arm tightened immediately. The corner of my lips pulled up against my will. "Luca."I tried to turn over, but he hauled me right back against his chest without even fully waking up."Not happening," he muttered, his voice still thick with sleep, the words half-buried in my hair."I haven't done anything yet.""You were about to leave me in bed.” He grunted. I laughed and finally managed to turn in his arms. His eyes were half-open, dark hair wrecked beyond repair, jaw soft with sleep. There were no calculations running behind his eyes. This was the version of him nobody got to see except me.I would never say tha
LUCA Leo was screaming, and no, he wasn't whining, or crying. He was screaming his lungs off, a sound so loud I couldn't stop the grimace on my face. His scream suggested someone had released a feral animal in the living room and he has stumbled on it. I stopped in the doorway, my keys still hanging from my fingers, and saw my son screaming "I'm a dragon!” over and over again. Maya came tearing past me a breath later, pigtails flying. "You're not a dragon! You're a lizard!" Leo whipped around like someone deeply wronged. "Dragons are not lizards!" Maya screamed back "They are!” "They are not!” I leaned against the doorframe and watched the whole disaster unfold, unable to stop the smile pulling at my lips. From the couch, Alina looked over her shoulder at me. The sun brushes her skin, lighting it beautifully. Her face was serene. "You're staring, aren't you going to stop them?” "I'm appreciating the fact that so much noise can come from such a small body.” I shook my hea
LUCAI didn't hear the shot from Ethan. I wasn't even sure where exactly he was shooting from, but one minute, Riot was huddled together with his guards, and the next second, his head jerked back. For a moment, it seemed he had tripped over something and the guards reached out to steady him. Except he didn't stop, he kept falling, his body folded in on himself like someone had pumped the life of him. Riot hit the pavement, blood pouring from his head shot wound, and flowing out onto the asphalt under him. None of the guards moved fast enough, and that was always a bad idea. They stopped and stared at him, as though they couldn't process what their eyes was showing them. I shoved open the SUV door and stepped out. The air was cold, smelled like rain and exhaust, but all I was looking at were the rooftops. My Glock was already in my hand, pointed up, and ready to shoot. Alvez was right behind me, grinning like this was his idea of a good time.Vector slid out on my side, his r
LUCAShe was quiet for a moment, searching my face. Then she nodded, tears welling in her eyes, but this time, they were good tears. “Yes.”I kissed her again, deeper this time, and she laughed against my lips. Leo came running over with grass stains on his knees, demanding juice, and Alina wiped her face quickly before scooping him into her lap. For a moment, everything felt easy.We sat together, sunlight burning my scalp while I watched the Leo and Maya run around the park. This was easy, I could do this. That was just before my phone rang. It was an unknown number and even before I answered, I could almost tell something was wrong. It was the prickle between my shoulders. It came and went, but it always came when there was danger. “Enjoying your day out, Luca?” a voice drawled on the other end.Every muscle in my body went rigid. “Who is this?”The man chuckled. “That’s a beautiful park, the boy and girl are cute. Shame if something happened to them.”My eyes shot to my men,
ALINA I called the number again.Nothing.I stared at the screen, heart pounding. It rang five times, then cut off.I swallowed, hit redial, prayed someone would pick up. The man who had called sounded dangerous, the kind of man who wouldn't care about hurting the child if he could get what he w
LUCA Alina was going to do something reckless.I could see it in the way her shoulders tensed, the way her hand hovered too close to her waist like she was wishing she had a gun. She was thinking too fast, moving too fast like her body was already making decisions her mind hadn’t caught up to.Im
ALINABlood was still dripping from the ax when I let it fall.It hit the floor with a thud, but I barely heard it over Riot’s ragged, pain-filled breaths. His face twisted in agony, sweat popping out on his forehead as he held the ruined stump of his arm.His breath came out in sharp, broken gasp
LUCAI stepped inside, barely taking in the mess of the room before my eyes locked on Alina. She stood in the center rigidly, looking shocked to see me.Behind her, a woman was sitting on a couch, clutching a child so tightly it looked like she was afraid someone would rip her away.Ethan was sitt
