Ava Bennett has spent her entire life living in the shadow of her perfect older sister, Elena. She never imagined that one morning, Elena would disappear—and Ava would be forced to take her place at the altar of the most feared man in the city. Luca De Luca is a ruthless billionaire with a dangerous reputation and a family legacy built on secrets. He was supposed to marry Elena for reasons that have nothing to do with love. But when Ava walks down the aisle wearing Elena’s wedding dress, Luca immediately knows the truth. She is not his intended bride. Yet instead of calling off the wedding, Luca makes Ava an impossible offer: one year of marriage. In exchange, he will erase her family’s crushing debt and protect them from the enemies closing in. Ava agrees, believing she can survive twelve months beside a man she neither trusts nor understands. But Luca has secrets of his own. Elena didn’t simply run away. She stole something powerful, uncovered a conspiracy, and left behind clues connecting both families to a series of murders that began fifteen years ago—including the suspicious death of Ava’s mother and Luca’s father. As Ava and Luca are drawn into a dangerous game of betrayal, attraction, and buried truths, they discover that their forced marriage may have been planned long before either of them knew the other existed. Someone wanted Ava beside Luca. Someone is willing to destroy everything to keep them together. And when Ava finally discovers the truth about Elena, she must decide whether to trust the husband she never chose—or become his greatest enemy.

Chapter 1: The Bride Who Was Never Me

The wedding dress was never meant for Ava Bennett. It hung from her shoulders like borrowed skin, every pearl stitched into the satin reminding her that she didn’t belong here. The bodice pressed against her ribs until breathing became an effort, while the train pooled around her feet like a river she could no longer cross.

She stared at her reflection in the floor-length mirror.

A stranger stared back.

Her chestnut hair had been twisted into an elegant chignon. Diamonds sparkled against her ears. Soft makeup concealed the freckles she had spent twenty-four years trying to ignore. For the first time in her life, she looked rich. For the first time in her life, she wished she didn’t.

The bedroom door burst open without warning.

“Ava.”

Her father’s voice cracked through the silence.

Richard Bennett stood in the doorway, his expensive suit unable to hide the panic etched across his face. Sweat glistened along his forehead despite the mansion’s cool air.

“They’re here.”

Ava didn’t turn around.“I know.” The ceremony starts in fifteen minutes.

“I know.”

He crossed the room in hurried strides. You have to come downstairs. Her fingers tightened around the edge of the vanity.

“I can’t.”

The words escaped as little more than a whisper, I can’t marry a man I’ve never met. Richard closed his eyes for a brief moment before speaking. “You don’t have a choice.” She laughed, though there wasn’t an ounce of humor in the sound. Isn’t that funny? I’ve heard those exact words my entire life.”

He looked away.

“When Mom died, I had no choice.”

Silence.

When Elena wanted to study abroad, I had no choice but to stay and work.

Another silence.

When the business started failing, I had no choice but to drop out of university. Her voice grew steadier with every sentence. And now you’re telling me I have no choice but to marry a complete stranger.

“Ava—”

“No.” She stood, the satin skirt rustling around her ankles. You don’t get to interrupt me this time. Richard’s shoulders sagged, she had never seen him look so small. The man who had once built one of the city’s largest construction companies now looked like someone carrying the weight of an entire collapsing world.

“You think I wanted this?” he asked quietly.

I don’t know what you wanted.

“I wanted to protect my family.”

Then why does it feel like you’ve only ever protected Elena? The question struck harder than she intended. Pain flashed across his face, “That’s not true.”

“It is.” She swallowed the lump rising in her throat. When I graduated at the top of my class, you missed the ceremony because Elena had a fashion competition.

He said nothing.

When I got my first job, you forgot to congratulate me.

Silence.

When I was hospitalized with pneumonia—

“Ava.”

You didn’t come.

His head lowered. “I was wrong.” It was the first apology she had heard from him in years. Maybe ever. But today, it wasn’t enough. A knock echoed outside the bedroom, a woman dressed in black stepped inside.

“Mr. Bennett.”

Her expression remained perfectly composed.

Mr. De Luca is asking whether the bride is ready. Every muscle in Ava’s body stiffened. The name alone carried enough power to silence the room, Luca De Luca. Even people who had never seen him knew his reputation. Some called him a billionaire, others called him a criminal. Most simply lowered their voices whenever his name was spoken. At thirty-two, he controlled an international shipping empire worth billions. Newspapers praised his business genius.

The police suspected something much darker but nothing had ever been proven. Which somehow made him even more terrifying.

The woman waited.

Richard forced a smile. “Tell Mr De Luca she’ll be downstairs shortly.” She nodded once before leaving. The door clicked shut.

Ava turned back to the mirror, I still don’t understand.

Richard hesitated. “You know why.”

“No.”

I’ve told you.

“You’ve told me the debt.”She met his eyes in the reflection, you’ve never told me the truth. He walked toward the window overlooking the sprawling gardens below.

Luxury cars lined the driveway, men in tailored black suits stood at every entrance, their earpieces glinting beneath the afternoon sun. They weren’t security guards, they were soldiers.

“There are things about Luca De Luca that people don’t understand,” Richard murmured.

Then explain them.

“He doesn’t forgive betrayal.” A chill crept through the room. Your sister accepted his proposal, contracts were signed and the engagement was announced worldwide.

“I know! I know! I know!”

His voice dropped. “And this morning…” He looked directly at her, Elena disappeared. Ava’s heart clenched, her older sister hadn’t left a note, hadn’t called, she hadn’t even taken most of her belongings. Only one message remained on her phone.

I’m sorry.

No explanation, no destination absolutely nothing. Just two words that had shattered their family before sunrise. Richard reached into his pocket and removed a folded piece of paper.

“I found this.”

Ava unfolded it carefully. The handwriting belonged unmistakably to Elena. Dad, I can’t marry him, I’d rather spend my life running than live in a cage. Please forgive me. Ava read the words twice before lowering the letter.

“So… she chose herself.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

And left us to pay the price. Ava looked once more at her reflection. The pearls, the veil, the ring waiting in its velvet box. None of it belonged to her, neither did the future waiting downstairs. Yet somewhere beneath the fear, another feeling stirred.

A question she couldn’t ignore. If Luca De Luca was truly as powerful as everyone claimed… Why would a man like him agree to marry Elena Bennett in the first place? Before she could ask, another knock thundered against the door. This time, it wasn’t a servant.

A deep, commanding voice echoed through the room. “The groom is coming upstairs.” Ava’s blood turned to ice, she hadn’t even reached the altar. And already, the man she was supposed to deceive was coming to meet his bride.
