Ariel was the first to bark out a laugh, and then we followed suit. Mine was mixed with anger and sheer disbelief, but the hunch I’d been feeling about his death stuck through, and instantly the humor eroded.

I didn’t believe that Cecilia could come all the way from Chicago to lie to us about Alessio’s death. She wasn’t a kid. And if she’d been in communication with him that meant that she knew something we had no idea about.

“You aren’t joking, are you?” Ariel questioned, a grin still plastered on her face.

“Would I travel that long distance just to come and make a fool of myself? Armando doesn’t even know that I’m out of town,”

Ariel’s grin faltered, her jaw dropping and then clamping shut afterwards. While she processed her shock, I turned to Cecilia.

“If Alessio can still speak to you then what connection does he have to you?”
