Chapter 2

作者: Ginger King
Aidan Rios, a senior employee, said sarcastically, "Jeremy, Bryan is right. His girlfriend comes from a wealthy family. Who knows, the company might end up counting on her to bring in some big deals down the road!

"Have you been single for so long that your mind has become twisted and you can't stand seeing other people happy?"

A male intern who had just graduated chimed in. "Exactly, Jeremy. If I were you, I'd volunteer to help. You're single anyway. You'll just go home and sit there by yourself. How miserable. Why not stay at work and keep yourself busy instead?

"No wonder you can't find a girlfriend. With such a petty personality, what woman would ever want you?"

They kept talking over each other, their voices ringing in my ears like a swarm of flies. At that moment, I finally realized there was no point in trying to reason with these people.

I slammed my palm down on the desk, and the sudden noise made all of them flinch. "Shut up, all of you! Since you care so much about the bigger picture and want to boost the national marriage rate so badly—"

I pointed at Aidan and the intern. "Fine. Aidan, since you're so enthusiastic, you can cover Bryan's shift. You already have kids, so you don't need to help boost the marriage rate anymore."

Then I turned to the intern. "And you. You think being single is so miserable, right? Then you can stay behind and work during New Year's too. Maybe one of the cafeteria ladies will see how hardworking you are and fall for you.

"Since this is such a great opportunity, you two should be fighting over it. Why push it onto me?"

The noisy crowd instantly fell silent. Aidan's face darkened, while the intern shrank back and didn't dare say another word.

Seeing that no one was backing him up anymore, Bryan kicked a chair in frustration. "I don't care. Ms. Robertson has already signed off on the list. It won't do you any good even if you go to admin!"

I grabbed the duty schedule off the desk and looked at him coldly. "Fine. Then let's go see Ms. Robertson."

The moment we walked into the office of our director, Angela Robertson, Bryan immediately put on a pitiful expression.

He sighed and said, "Ms. Robertson, I didn't mean anything bad by it. I just noticed Jeremy doesn't really have plans most of the time, so I thought I'd give him a chance to earn some extra overtime pay.

"Besides, I've already bought the tickets. They cost several hundred dollars. Not only did Jeremy refuse to help me, but he even yelled at me."

Angela was a strong, capable woman in her fifties. She had always had a soft spot for young guys like Bryan who knew how to put on a convincing act.

She frowned, tapped her desk, and looked at me. "Jeremy, it's such a small issue. Did you really have to bring it all the way to me?"

I took a deep breath and tried to stay calm. "Ms. Robertson, this isn't a small thing. It's a matter of principle. If anyone who wants to slack off can simply put someone else's name on the schedule, then what's the point of the company's attendance system?

"Besides, I already booked my own trip, and it can't be refunded either."

I lied. I hadn't actually booked anything yet, but there was no way I was backing down now.

Angela's frown deepened, clearly annoyed that I wasn't giving in. "Jeremy, you need to learn to be flexible. Team spirit is very important. By refusing to cooperate, you're putting me in a difficult position."

Bryan chimed in beside her, his words a mix of threats and bribery. "Jeremy, how about I pay you an extra five hundred dollars? I'm begging you. Stop being so selfish, okay? We're both men. Don't be so petty about it."

The two of them worked together perfectly. I was the one being wronged, yet somehow I became the troublemaker.

I had thought Angela, as the leader, would be reasonable about an issue clearly covered by company policy, like holiday duty, but she turned out to be just as disappointing as Bryan.

I took another deep breath and looked at Angela and Bryan seriously. "Ms. Robertson, if the company is mandating that I work the shift, please issue a written notice and cover the losses from canceling my trip. If this is simply Bryan's personal request, then I'm sorry, but I won't agree to it."

The office fell silent for a few seconds. Angela probably hadn't expected that someone like me, who usually kept my head down and worked quietly, would push back so firmly today.

She narrowed her eyes, a hint of malice appearing in her expression. "Fine, Jeremy. Since you refuse to go along with the arrangement, hand over the Starhaven Technologies project you've been working on."

I froze. "What did you just say?"

Angela picked up her coffee cup and spoke casually. "I said, transfer the project to Bryan. This project is important, and it needs someone who understands the bigger picture and knows how to handle things flexibly.

"Someone as petty as you isn't suited to working with major clients. Bryan has been performing well lately. Let him take over. You can use the opportunity to get some rest."

After Bryan was taken away, the company finally became peaceful. The employees who had once followed him around kept their heads down, afraid I'd settle accounts with them.I couldn't be bothered to deal with them. In the workplace, ability was what truly mattered. As long as I firmly held my position as director, they'd naturally learn how to behave.…Three months later, Starhaven Technologies' new product launch was a complete success, and sales reached another record high. As the PR director, I was invited to the celebration banquet. At the banquet, Mr. Whitaker walked over with a wine glass in hand, his face showing genuine emotion. "Mr. Crawford, it's all thanks to you this time. If it hadn't been for that bold move you pulled off back then, Starhaven Technologies really would've been doomed."I smiled and clinked glasses with him. "You're too kind, Mr. Whitaker. I was just doing my job."While we were talking, my phone suddenly buzzed. A text message from an unknown number

I stood on the steps, looking down at Bryan with a calm expression. "An explanation? What explanation do you want? Bryan, are you claiming you have a serious illness and that we're heartless?"Bryan pulled a stack of crumpled papers out of his pocket and waved them in front of me, wearing a confident expression. He said, "Of course! These are my hospital reports! The doctor said I have severe nervous exhaustion and depression, that I can't handle stress, and that it's a work-related injury! The law states that companies can't fire employees during medical leave!"Besides, my girlfriend is already five weeks pregnant! We're getting married and are about to have a child. Firing me now is pushing us toward ruin!"I glanced at the report and smiled. "Bryan, you were fired on New Year's Day, which was January 1. At that time, you were energetically riding roller coasters at the theme park. How come you didn't show any signs of a herniated disc then?"I checked the date on the report. "

After the holiday ended, I returned to the office. As soon as I walked through the entrance, the receptionist warmly greeted me with a steaming cup of coffee in her hand. "Good morning, Mr. Crawford! I bought you a hot black coffee, no sugar!"I took the coffee and nodded with a smile. When I walked into the PR department, Bryan was packing up his belongings at his desk. The coworkers around him all kept their heads down and focused on their work. No one dared to look at him, let alone gather around him and act like they were his buddies like before. That was how things worked in the workplace. People were brutally realistic. When Bryan saw me walk in, he paused for a moment while packing up his things. He looked up, his eyes filled with resentment and malice. "Jeremy, are you feeling pretty pleased with yourself now?"He gritted his teeth. "You just got lucky. If I'd been on this project from the beginning, I could've handled that problem too! What gives you the right to use my

After ending the call, I opened the laptop I always carried with me. Even while on vacation, I never traveled without the laptop that I relied on to make a living.I logged into the company's internal messaging system. The PR department group chat, which had gone quiet after being bombarded with messages earlier, sprang back to life the moment I came online."Mr. Crawford! You're finally online!""Jeremy, help!""The media is blocking the entrance right now. What should we do?"Ignoring those useless remarks, my fingers flew across the keyboard as I sent out my first instruction. "Everyone, listen up. Operations team, pull down that brainless blame-shifting statement Bryan put out immediately. Replace the pinned post with the apology and recall announcement I'm sending you now."Remember, be as humble as possible. Don't make excuses. Tell everyone we failed in our oversight, we accept the consequences, and we'll provide full refunds."People online aren't stupid. Taking responsi

By the time I finished my afternoon skiing session and got back to the hotel, it was already dark. I connected my phone to the hotel's Wi-Fi.I was shocked. Things had unfolded even more dramatically than I had imagined. While people online had been demanding an explanation from Starhaven Technologies, Bryan had actually released an incredibly stupid statement. In it, he blamed the product problems on improper use by consumers and claimed the brand had nothing to do with it. That completely enraged the public. The topic "Starhaven Technologies Shifts the Blame" shot straight to the top of the trending list. Starhaven Technologies' stock hit its daily limit down in just one afternoon.A coworker I got along well with told me that Starhaven Technologies' CEO, Evan Whitaker, personally stormed into our office with his team and flipped a conference room table cover. At the same time, I received a new WhatsApp message. It was from the company's owner, Andrea Powell.Ms. Powell was the

Reading all those messages, I laughed my head off. After I finished laughing, I posted on Instagram in a great mood, tagging my location at the ski resort on Northstar Mountain. The caption read, "The happiness of being single is something you'll never understand."Then I hit the post button. Less than a minute later, my phone rang. It was a call from Bryan.I made him wait for 30 seconds before slowly answering. "Hello? Who's this?"On the other end, Bryan shouted furiously, while phones rang and Angela yelled in the background. "Jeremy! You finally picked up! Get back here right now! We're finished!"The people at Starhaven Technologies said if we don't come up with a solution within half an hour, they're going to sue us and demand double compensation for breach of contract! That's five million dollars!"I shifted in my seat and spoke in a relaxed tone. "Oh, it's you, Bryan. Didn't you go to the theme park? Did you get to meet the giant robot mascot?"Well, I'm on vacation too
