Chapter 3

作者: Ginger King
The blood rushed straight to my head in an instant. I had been working on this major project for three months!

Over those three months, I never left the office before 10:00 pm. I had revised the proposal more than ten times, pulled countless all-nighters, and lost clumps of hair.

Now the proposal was finalized, the client was satisfied, and we were about to sign the acceptance documents so I could receive my commission and year-end bonus. Making me hand over the project at this point was obviously an attempt to take credit for my work.

Sure enough, the moment Bryan heard the news, he dropped the pitiful look he had been putting on, and the corners of his mouth curled up despite his efforts to hide it.

He shot me a smug glance. "Ms. Robertson, don't worry. I definitely won't let you down! I'll do a far better job than certain people who only know how to work blindly without thinking!"

I trembled with anger. When I spoke again, my voice cracked with emotion. "On what grounds? Aren't you worried that doing this will discourage those of us who actually do the real work? This is unfair. I'm going to appeal to higher management!"

Angela simply let out a cold laugh. "Who are you going to take this up with? Ms. Powell? She's so busy every day, and even I rarely get to see her. How are you going to reach her?

"Also, don't even think about quitting. The company spent a fortune training you and had you sign a five-year contract. If you leave before it expires, you'll have to pay millions of dollars in penalties for breaching your contract."

As soon as she finished speaking, my heart sank.

I walked back to my desk, completely disheartened. The moment I sat down, Bryan dropped a stack of documents nearly as tall as my waist onto my desk with a loud bang.

Even though he was clearly thrilled, he put on a helpless expression. "Look at you. You just had to make a scene. Now I have to clean up the mess you left behind.

"Forget it. I'll just treat this as repayment for you switching shifts with me. Since you're free now, you can take care of all the invoices and reports I've piled up over the past two weeks."

I was furious. I couldn't believe that Bryan actually made stealing my credit sound like he was doing me a favor. Some people really had no sense of shame.

What made it worse was that quite a few coworkers who didn't know the truth actually fell for his act and praised him for being generous.

I took several deep breaths and reminded myself not to get angry. If I let my anger affect my health, nobody would pay the price except me.

But as soon as I opened the company group chat and saw the announcements Angela had posted, I nearly crushed my phone from anger.

Angela tagged everyone in the group and wrote, "Formal reprimand. Employee Jeremy Crawford has shown a negative work attitude, a lack of team spirit, and insubordination toward a superior.

"By management's decision, he has been removed from his position as project leader. Let this serve as a warning to all.

"In addition, Jeremy is required to submit a 30,000-word self-reflection before the end of the New Year's holiday and will no longer be eligible for this year's year-end bonus review."

The group chat was silent at first. Bryan was the first one to reply, saying, "I support the company's decision!"

Right after that, the sycophants followed suit.

By then, I was so worn down that I didn't even have the energy to be angry anymore. Instead, I felt a slight urge to laugh. I really shouldn't have been so lenient with these people.

I opened the company's system and submitted an annual leave request right away. I had saved up 30 days of annual leave because I had been so busy that I hadn't taken a single day off in the past two years.

Then I booked a flight to Northstar Mountain. According to company policy, an annual leave request would be approved automatically as long as it was submitted in the system in advance and didn't conflict with any major projects.

I took a screenshot of the approved request, saved the recording I had made in Angela's office, and backed up both files to cloud storage. After that, I compiled all the files related to the Starhaven Technologies project and sent them to Bryan.

I really wanted to see how this group of useless people, who cared more about appearances than real work, was going to finish this major project without someone like me, someone they could push around and rely on to handle all the hard work.

After Bryan was taken away, the company finally became peaceful. The employees who had once followed him around kept their heads down, afraid I'd settle accounts with them.I couldn't be bothered to deal with them. In the workplace, ability was what truly mattered. As long as I firmly held my position as director, they'd naturally learn how to behave.…Three months later, Starhaven Technologies' new product launch was a complete success, and sales reached another record high. As the PR director, I was invited to the celebration banquet. At the banquet, Mr. Whitaker walked over with a wine glass in hand, his face showing genuine emotion. "Mr. Crawford, it's all thanks to you this time. If it hadn't been for that bold move you pulled off back then, Starhaven Technologies really would've been doomed."I smiled and clinked glasses with him. "You're too kind, Mr. Whitaker. I was just doing my job."While we were talking, my phone suddenly buzzed. A text message from an unknown number

I stood on the steps, looking down at Bryan with a calm expression. "An explanation? What explanation do you want? Bryan, are you claiming you have a serious illness and that we're heartless?"Bryan pulled a stack of crumpled papers out of his pocket and waved them in front of me, wearing a confident expression. He said, "Of course! These are my hospital reports! The doctor said I have severe nervous exhaustion and depression, that I can't handle stress, and that it's a work-related injury! The law states that companies can't fire employees during medical leave!"Besides, my girlfriend is already five weeks pregnant! We're getting married and are about to have a child. Firing me now is pushing us toward ruin!"I glanced at the report and smiled. "Bryan, you were fired on New Year's Day, which was January 1. At that time, you were energetically riding roller coasters at the theme park. How come you didn't show any signs of a herniated disc then?"I checked the date on the report. "

After the holiday ended, I returned to the office. As soon as I walked through the entrance, the receptionist warmly greeted me with a steaming cup of coffee in her hand. "Good morning, Mr. Crawford! I bought you a hot black coffee, no sugar!"I took the coffee and nodded with a smile. When I walked into the PR department, Bryan was packing up his belongings at his desk. The coworkers around him all kept their heads down and focused on their work. No one dared to look at him, let alone gather around him and act like they were his buddies like before. That was how things worked in the workplace. People were brutally realistic. When Bryan saw me walk in, he paused for a moment while packing up his things. He looked up, his eyes filled with resentment and malice. "Jeremy, are you feeling pretty pleased with yourself now?"He gritted his teeth. "You just got lucky. If I'd been on this project from the beginning, I could've handled that problem too! What gives you the right to use my

After ending the call, I opened the laptop I always carried with me. Even while on vacation, I never traveled without the laptop that I relied on to make a living.I logged into the company's internal messaging system. The PR department group chat, which had gone quiet after being bombarded with messages earlier, sprang back to life the moment I came online."Mr. Crawford! You're finally online!""Jeremy, help!""The media is blocking the entrance right now. What should we do?"Ignoring those useless remarks, my fingers flew across the keyboard as I sent out my first instruction. "Everyone, listen up. Operations team, pull down that brainless blame-shifting statement Bryan put out immediately. Replace the pinned post with the apology and recall announcement I'm sending you now."Remember, be as humble as possible. Don't make excuses. Tell everyone we failed in our oversight, we accept the consequences, and we'll provide full refunds."People online aren't stupid. Taking responsi

By the time I finished my afternoon skiing session and got back to the hotel, it was already dark. I connected my phone to the hotel's Wi-Fi.I was shocked. Things had unfolded even more dramatically than I had imagined. While people online had been demanding an explanation from Starhaven Technologies, Bryan had actually released an incredibly stupid statement. In it, he blamed the product problems on improper use by consumers and claimed the brand had nothing to do with it. That completely enraged the public. The topic "Starhaven Technologies Shifts the Blame" shot straight to the top of the trending list. Starhaven Technologies' stock hit its daily limit down in just one afternoon.A coworker I got along well with told me that Starhaven Technologies' CEO, Evan Whitaker, personally stormed into our office with his team and flipped a conference room table cover. At the same time, I received a new WhatsApp message. It was from the company's owner, Andrea Powell.Ms. Powell was the

Reading all those messages, I laughed my head off. After I finished laughing, I posted on Instagram in a great mood, tagging my location at the ski resort on Northstar Mountain. The caption read, "The happiness of being single is something you'll never understand."Then I hit the post button. Less than a minute later, my phone rang. It was a call from Bryan.I made him wait for 30 seconds before slowly answering. "Hello? Who's this?"On the other end, Bryan shouted furiously, while phones rang and Angela yelled in the background. "Jeremy! You finally picked up! Get back here right now! We're finished!"The people at Starhaven Technologies said if we don't come up with a solution within half an hour, they're going to sue us and demand double compensation for breach of contract! That's five million dollars!"I shifted in my seat and spoke in a relaxed tone. "Oh, it's you, Bryan. Didn't you go to the theme park? Did you get to meet the giant robot mascot?"Well, I'm on vacation too
