Se connecter“You know, no one could believe it when you showed up at the party this weekend, cousin,” Charles said as he followed me into Dimitri’s office Monday morning. “I believed it even less when Meech called and said you’d be coming in for a few days.”
“And I’m assuming Dimitri also told you that I had free reign while I’m here, as well?” I asked as I opened one of the files left on the desk.
“Oh, um, yes, he did,” Charles confirmed hesitantly.
I raised an eyebrow and looked over at him sternly. “Is there a problem?”
He cleared his throat and clasped his hands in front of him. “Well, you see, you’ve been away for a long time, cousin,” he began. “I was under the impression that didn’t want anything to do with the company. A lot has changed. I’ve put in…”
“By law, I still have the same claim to this company as Dimitri,” I told him flatly. “I’m here now. I would like to know just how much the company has changed.”
“With all due respect, Sylas, I’m not sure you’d under…”
“Honestly, Charlie, I don’t give a shit about your respect,” I interrupted. “And you may want to think twice before tell me I’m too stupid to understand how to run a business.”
“That’s not…”
“I think I can find my way around here,” I said dismissively. “Unless you would like to start with going over how you spend your day?”
Charlie grumbled as he checked his watch. “No, that won’t be necessary,” he replied. “However, I am scheduled to use the adjoining conference room for briefing with our new project manager within the hour. I didn’t have a chance to chan…”
“That will be fine,” I stated. “In fact, I wouldn’t mind sitting in on that myself.”
Charles opened his mouth to speak but stopped himself. “Of course,” he conceded. “I’ll be back just before ten.”
I didn’t bother with a response as he walked out stiffly, while I took a seat at my brother’s desk. I had to say, I was more than surprised at the rather warm welcome I’d received from my brother. I was prepared for an attempt to run me out of the city. After being forced into a reunion with the rest of the family at the ball, Dimitri and I ended up in his study reminiscing into the wee hours of the morning. It was quite nice actually. Until he asked me what I was doing back.
He was less impressed when I told him I was interested in catching up with what the company. He was rather confused that I wanted anything do with it after all these years and got a little suspicious of my reasoning. I had come prepared though. I told him that my own business has been doing very well for years now and that I may possibly be interested in a merger. That seemed to reignite his excitement. Enough so that he insisted on giving me free reign over his office for as long as I needed. Obviously, Charles wasn’t so eager about the arrangement.
Charles Drakos was a second cousin and life-long little shit. At nearly ten years younger, he was a bit of a hanger-on growing up. Always half as smart as he thought he was, but good at kissing asses. So, I was only half surprised to find him practically running this place as the COO and acting CEO when Dimitri couldn’t be bothered. Which if rumor was true—was most of the time.
I typed in the password Dimitri had given me to get into his main computer. It would be a mundane day just to get started. I wouldn’t find anything on the surface level records, but I needed to familiarize myself with everything the company was working on to know where to start digging.
I was knee deep in quarterly reports when the office door opened. Charles came in, nodding his head to me as he straightened his suit. He had several associates behind him.
“I’ll be in the conference room when you’re ready,” he told me.
Pushing away from the desk, I grabbed a notepad and pen before following the group in. Tugging at my tie, I went to the conference room. There was another door leading in from the hallway where others were starting to join from as well.
“So, who is this new project manager?” I asked, taking a seat at the head of the table.
“Her predecessor took early retirement,” Charlie said, clearing his voice as he took the seat next to me. “She’s young but came highly recommended.”
“Her name?”
“Mmm… Hopkins,” he replied absently. “S. Hopkins. I forget her first name.”
“Sawyer,” his assistant said. “Sawyer Hopkins. Here she is.”
My body stiffened. My head snapped up. My eyes going straight for the door. She had already caught sight of me as she stood in the doorway. She looked different. Her hair was pinned up in a professional style. She wore dark-rimmed glasses and her makeup was more subtle. But there was no hiding those ice blue eyes and full lips. It was definitely her.
And she was just as stunning.
But something wasn’t right. I swear Dimitri said her surname was Campair, like her mother. And why hadn’t he mentioned he had gotten her a job when I asked about her? Why hadn’t Charlie mentioned she was Cassandra’s daughter?
Sawyer seemed to give me an almost undiscernible shake of her head before continuing into the room.
“Ah, Ms. Hopkins, it’s good to see you again,” Charlie greeted. “Are you ready to make your presentation?”
Sawyer gave him a confident, professional smile. The grip on my pen tightened. If I wasn’t so intrigued with how the presentation would go, I would have worried how I would make it through it.
“Of course, Mr. Drakos,” she said smoothly. “Ready when you are.”
I pet Arlo’s head as I sat outside the café near the house. I was waiting for Sylvia to join me. It felt a little strange knowing that her husband was sitting two tables away just watching me, but he insisted that it would be unprofessional to join us while he was working. So, I settled for getting him a coffee while he watched Arlo for me.“Sawyer…?”I turned to see Sylvia come from the direction of the parking lot. I got to my feet and greeted her with a somewhat nervous hug. I still wasn’t sure how this situation was going to go. Her relationship with her family was a lot different than mine. It was hard not to feel some guilt.“So, how are you settling in?” I asked as we settled back down at the table.“Honestly, really well,” she replied with a genuine smile, letting Arlo sniff her hand. “I’ve been wondering why we didn’t do this sooner. You’re looking great. At least since the last time I saw you.”“Yeah, I would hope,” I said with a light smile. “It seems we’re both taking to t
Christina and I laughed as we sat on the back porch and drank cocktails. It was a hot evening but I didn’t care. I wanted to admire the work that I had put in over the past two days already. I had genuinely been disappointed when the board fired me. Especially since I knew how much it meant to Sylas to have me working with him. But after a day or so, my disappointment faded. There just seemed to be so much else I could be doing.“So, where is Darla?” I asked. “What is this job you said she was working on that she couldn’t step away to come over tonight?”“Oh, yeah, well, it’s not a design job, actually,” Christina said. “She’s dancing tonight.”“Dancing? What? I thought she didn’t need to go back to stripping?” I asked.“She doesn’t,” Chris said with a shrug. “She said she missed the workout. Apparently, I do too good a job taking care of her. She’s gained five pounds and she thinks she’s letting herself go. It’s ridiculous.”“She could just join a gym,” I replied with a laugh.“But w
Everyone started to stand from the conference table. They shook hands and murmured their goodbyes to each other, but they were smart enough to stay well clear of me. I had no intention of pretending to be content with this decision. But Sawyer seemed fine with it. So, that saved them from any repercussions from me for the time being.Out of respect, Sawyer stood by her chair. Letting the rest of the board leave before her. Just as Rick came up next to me, I saw Bella approach her. I tensed.“Try not to take it personally, Sawyer,” Bella told her. “This really only applies to any role requiring a security clearance. I would hate to think you felt like you weren’t welcome within the company in any capacity.” She reached into her bag and pulled out some paper. “In fact, I’ve taken the liberty to put together a few applications for you. They’re for some entry-level positions. You know, something more appropriate to your experience.”My hands fisted. She was trying to humiliate Sawyer even
I started to panic as we got closer to the conference room. I was terrified they would know what we’d just done in his office. Sylas and I knew what happened only showed how strong our relationship was, but I knew the people in that conference room would take the wrong way entirely. How could they not?I shook off the thoughts. How could they know? It would be fine. Everything would be fine.I took the seat at the end of the table. Feeling every eye in the room on me. Sylas moved to stand against the wall. Giving the board members enough space to feel they could converse but still making sure they knew he was there and he would have a say.Holding my head high, I looked around at each of the familiar faces. For the most part, I had only met them the one time at dinner when Sylas announced he would accept the EPA contract. Rick was there, of course. He gave me a supportive smile and nod. But he was the only one that didn’t have me worried. Especially once I saw the smug look on Bella’s
Sylas was not happy about my suggestion but I felt like it was the best solution. This would give me the opportunity to defend myself. However, I was a bit surprised at how fast Eric jumped at the idea. And how quickly he managed to arrange the meeting.“They want to catch you off guard,” Sylas said bitterly, pacing his office that evening. “They don’t want to give you time to prepare a lie.”“Well, I had no intention of lying, so that doesn’t really matter,” I told him calmly.“I know you weren’t. That’s not the point,” he stated. “You shouldn’t have to do this in the first place.”“Why not?” I asked honestly. “You gave me a job, Sylas. Anyone else would have to interview, have a background check, and go through all the other avenues to make sure they were a good candidate. I know it’s your company, but they have a vested interest in it.”“And they should trust me to protect that interest,” he replied angrily. “They have for all these years before. Why question now?”He needed to rel
As I entered the office, I found Sylas at his desk, brooding over some papers in front of him. He looked tired. Run-down even. Enough that I paused for a second. I’d never seen him like this. Not even this morning when I knew he wasn’t looking forward to dealing with the aftermath, despite his assurances. My heart ached as I realized I hadn’t really done much to take care of him through this.In fact, I’d been a little distant, considering. When he was first released, we let ourselves get distracted by the heat and passion that was always there between us. Somewhere under the surface whenever we were close. But when we came back to the real world, something seemed off. I felt like he wasn’t being honest with me about the seriousness of the situation. Then he left to work last night, which had taken me completely by surprise. It felt like he was avoiding me. That, of course, stirred my insecurities. When the hour stretched into several, I’d started to think he was rethinking our engagem
I was about to ask what he was saying when I heard my mother’s laughter coming back inside. My cheeks flushed bright red as I scrambled to get away from him. I stumbled back around the corner and into the kitchen.“There you are, honey,” Mom said. “Come outside.”“Um…” I swallowed and cleared my th
My masked lover looked down at me contentedly. Possessively.“That was, by far, the last thing I expected to experience tonight,” he told me.I chuckled. “I certainly didn’t either.”He went to remove his mask but my hand shot up to stop him. For some reason it felt like it would ruin it.“Don’t,”
I pulled away with a gasp. My face turning red with both embarrassment and desire. My eyes darted around my surroundings. How did we get here? I somehow ended up with my back pressed against a decorative column in a dimly lit corner of the venue. That at least saved my dignity. I couldn’t believe I’
Here we go. Two hours. That’s all I had to get through was two hours tops. That shouldn’t be too hard. It is a masquerade ball after all. The vast majority of the people here wouldn’t have recognized me without the mask anyway. At least that can last a bit longer after tonight and I wouldn’t have a
