“Babe, I think you’re focusing too much on the whole uncle thing,” Christine said as we sat on the couch the next morning. “I mean, you guys aren’t actually related. You’ve never even met before. Hell, you’ve only met your stepfather three times. It’s not like you call him ‘daddy,’ or anything.”

“Ha ha, very funny,” I said, petting Aldo’s head as he laid next to me. “But you’re right. It’s not really about the uncle thing. It’s about the mission. Things are already complicated enough because of Mom. And risky enough. We have no idea why he’s here. It’s been over a decade and he chooses now to show up?”

“Okay, but that doesn’t mean he’ll have reason to figure out what you’re up to,” Christina said, cradling her coffee cup. “Even Dimitri isn’t likely to run into at the office.”

I snorted. “Because he’s barely there.”

“Exactly,” she replied. “Sylas is probably just here to visit. Make amends or something.”

“But what if he’s not?” I asked. “What if he’s here for the company? His reputation isn’t good, Chris. He did some bad things before he ran off. If he catches me… it could get dangerous.”

Christina sighed, giving me a sympathetic look with a tilt of her head. “You can always back out,” she said. “Put this whole plan of yours on hold for a while until he’s gone.”

I shook my head. “No, I can’t do that.”

There was a reason I had only met Dimitri so few times. Up until a month ago, I lived in another state with a completely different life. I’d gone away to college when I was eighteen. I worked my butt off in school, getting my undergrad and then a master’s degree. I wanted to do something to help people. To make a difference in the world. Or at least in my little corner of it.

Four years ago, I was accepted into an internship with an amazing company. An investment firm that focused on environmental research and conservation. The owner, Simon, quickly became my personal mentor. I was inspired by his passion for change. He worked with companies researching alternative fuels, sustainable housing and resources, land preservation, and other projects that could revolutionize the way we live today.

Last year, a few months before my graduation, Simon told me was going to start training me to take over the company. He was only a few years away from retirement and he believed it would be in safe hands with me. I was so honored.

But it wasn’t long after that when I started to notice the problems he had been facing. Problems he had tried to hide from me. He insisted that it was nothing to worry about. The he had a plan and it would all go away in a few months. Then he got sick. In a few short days, he was gone. He died from an infection that got into his bones.

I was devastated, to say the least. So many people loved Simon. He was like a father to me. So, losing him was heartbreaking. But was worse—I lost the company. After Simon died, I had to prepare the company to for the change in ownership. That’s when I found out things were much more serious than Simon had let on. Our investments were being bought out and shut down left and right. Projects were stalled by bureaucratic red tape and code violations. Partners were being forced to pull their funds.

We were being targeted. Someone actively wanted to put us out of business. And they succeeded. They did such a good job that Simon was broke when he died. So broke that when he cut himself when out on a field mission, he chose not to go to hospital when the signs of infection got worse.

Needless to say, my heartbreak turned to outrage. Whoever was behind the sabotage was responsible for Simon’s death and I swore to find out who it was. I spent months digging. Imagine my surprise when every link could somehow be traced back to none other than Wyvern Capital Enterprises.

Crazy enough, that’s actually how I found out my mother was a married woman. I was looking into Wyvern Capital to find a way to bring them to justice when I discovered that the CEO had recently welcomed a new wife into his family. I was shocked by the smiling face I’d seen in the photo from the announcement.

When I confronted her about not telling me, she said she knew I had been going through a lot with Simon and the business and she didn’t want to interfere. I wasn’t sure if it was actually a sweet gesture or not, if I was honest. But I still couldn’t say I was happy about the situation. After some arguments and a bit of the cold shoulder, I eventually realized this could be the opportunity I needed.

Now, here we were. I started my new position as a project manager for Wyvern Capital tomorrow morning. The only thing was—my mother and new stepfather didn’t even know. They couldn’t know. That included this entirely new complication that was my incredibly sexy, attractive new uncle.

“How am I going to do this, Chris?” I groaned in frustration. “Why can’t I stop thinking about him?”

“Don’t look at me,” she said with an amused grin. “This is all your crazy family mess.”

Just as she said the words, my phone buzzed to life on the coffee table in front of us. My mother’s contact flashing on the screen. With a heavy sigh, I picked it up.

“Good morning, Mother,” I answered.

“Sawyer, where did you sneak off to last night? You missed the rest of the party,” Mom started. “No matter. You can tell us at dinner.”

“Dinner? No, Mom, I can’t tonight…”

“I know, I know,” she assured me. “Tomorrow. To celebrate your first day at your new job here in the city. I still don’t know why you haven’t told me anything about it. But there will be no more excuses after tomorrow. Be at the penthouse by seven-thirty. Love you, darling.”

The call disconnected before I could say anything else.

“Unbelievable.”

I pet Arlo’s head as I sat outside the café near the house. I was waiting for Sylvia to join me. It felt a little strange knowing that her husband was sitting two tables away just watching me, but he insisted that it would be unprofessional to join us while he was working. So, I settled for getting him a coffee while he watched Arlo for me.“Sawyer…?”I turned to see Sylvia come from the direction of the parking lot. I got to my feet and greeted her with a somewhat nervous hug. I still wasn’t sure how this situation was going to go. Her relationship with her family was a lot different than mine. It was hard not to feel some guilt.“So, how are you settling in?” I asked as we settled back down at the table.“Honestly, really well,” she replied with a genuine smile, letting Arlo sniff her hand. “I’ve been wondering why we didn’t do this sooner. You’re looking great. At least since the last time I saw you.”“Yeah, I would hope,” I said with a light smile. “It seems we’re both taking to t

Christina and I laughed as we sat on the back porch and drank cocktails. It was a hot evening but I didn’t care. I wanted to admire the work that I had put in over the past two days already. I had genuinely been disappointed when the board fired me. Especially since I knew how much it meant to Sylas to have me working with him. But after a day or so, my disappointment faded. There just seemed to be so much else I could be doing.“So, where is Darla?” I asked. “What is this job you said she was working on that she couldn’t step away to come over tonight?”“Oh, yeah, well, it’s not a design job, actually,” Christina said. “She’s dancing tonight.”“Dancing? What? I thought she didn’t need to go back to stripping?” I asked.“She doesn’t,” Chris said with a shrug. “She said she missed the workout. Apparently, I do too good a job taking care of her. She’s gained five pounds and she thinks she’s letting herself go. It’s ridiculous.”“She could just join a gym,” I replied with a laugh.“But wh

Everyone started to stand from the conference table. They shook hands and murmured their goodbyes to each other, but they were smart enough to stay well clear of me. I had no intention of pretending to be content with this decision. But Sawyer seemed fine with it. So, that saved them from any repercussions from me for the time being.Out of respect, Sawyer stood by her chair. Letting the rest of the board leave before her. Just as Rick came up next to me, I saw Bella approach her. I tensed.“Try not to take it personally, Sawyer,” Bella told her. “This really only applies to any role requiring a security clearance. I would hate to think you felt like you weren’t welcome within the company in any capacity.” She reached into her bag and pulled out some paper. “In fact, I’ve taken the liberty to put together a few applications for you. They’re for some entry-level positions. You know, something more appropriate to your experience.”My hands fisted. She was trying to humiliate Sawyer even

I started to panic as we got closer to the conference room. I was terrified they would know what we’d just done in his office. Sylas and I knew what happened only showed how strong our relationship was, but I knew the people in that conference room would take the wrong way entirely. How could they not?I shook off the thoughts. How could they know? It would be fine. Everything would be fine.I took the seat at the end of the table. Feeling every eye in the room on me. Sylas moved to stand against the wall. Giving the board members enough space to feel they could converse but still making sure they knew he was there and he would have a say.Holding my head high, I looked around at each of the familiar faces. For the most part, I had only met them the one time at dinner when Sylas announced he would accept the EPA contract. Rick was there, of course. He gave me a supportive smile and nod. But he was the only one that didn’t have me worried. Especially once I saw the smug look on Bella’s

Sylas was not happy about my suggestion but I felt like it was the best solution. This would give me the opportunity to defend myself. However, I was a bit surprised at how fast Eric jumped at the idea. And how quickly he managed to arrange the meeting.“They want to catch you off guard,” Sylas said bitterly, pacing his office that evening. “They don’t want to give you time to prepare a lie.”“Well, I had no intention of lying, so that doesn’t really matter,” I told him calmly.“I know you weren’t. That’s not the point,” he stated. “You shouldn’t have to do this in the first place.”“Why not?” I asked honestly. “You gave me a job, Sylas. Anyone else would have to interview, have a background check, and go through all the other avenues to make sure they were a good candidate. I know it’s your company, but they have a vested interest in it.”“And they should trust me to protect that interest,” he replied angrily. “They have for all these years before. Why question now?”He needed to rel

As I entered the office, I found Sylas at his desk, brooding over some papers in front of him. He looked tired. Run-down even. Enough that I paused for a second. I’d never seen him like this. Not even this morning when I knew he wasn’t looking forward to dealing with the aftermath, despite his assurances. My heart ached as I realized I hadn’t really done much to take care of him through this.In fact, I’d been a little distant, considering. When he was first released, we let ourselves get distracted by the heat and passion that was always there between us. Somewhere under the surface whenever we were close. But when we came back to the real world, something seemed off. I felt like he wasn’t being honest with me about the seriousness of the situation. Then he left to work last night, which had taken me completely by surprise. It felt like he was avoiding me. That, of course, stirred my insecurities. When the hour stretched into several, I’d started to think he was rethinking our engagem
