Chapter 0006

"All right then, I would love to see if the Woods would really rather starve to death than beg my family for help!" Kieran declared.

Then, he pulled his phone out and gave an order to his assistant. "Acquire the Wood family's business."

"Mr. Kingsley, which Wood family?"

"My in-laws," Kieran replied, staring straight at Valerie.

Valerie had to fight the urge to beat up her own husband on her wedding night.

She was huffing in frustration. Out of panic at the prospect of her parents' business, she blurted, "Kieran, you unreasonable king of this shitty business empire!"

"You …"

Kieran didn't know much about Valerie yet, and he hadn't expected her to use such crude language around him.

Valerie ran out of the room in her evening dress and grabbed a housekeeper's arm. "Where is Mr. William?"

Her actions startled the poor housekeeper, who stammered, "B—bedroom."

Valerie asked again, "Where is his bedroom?"

The housekeeper pointed toward William's bedroom.

Just then, a woman appeared from around the corner. Judging by her age and her attire, Valerie guessed that she was none other than Kieran's sister-in-law and Martin's wife, Amelia Chester.

Amelia addressed the housekeeper, "Leave us."

The housekeeper bowed before scurrying away.

Valerie looked at Amelia and couldn't wrap her mind around how she was her sister-in-law. This woman was three years older than her own mother!

Amelia walked to her and took in Valerie's appearance before asking, "Why are you looking for Dad?"

"He went back on his promise to me."

Amelia glanced at Kieran, who had also come out, and her gaze flickered between the newlyweds.

"It's your wedding night. But instead of being in your room, you're out here, causing a ruckus. Aren't you afraid people will talk?"

Amelia's tone was judgmental and disapproving.

"It's none of your business, Amelia," Kieran replied rudely.

Amelia's expression soured at that, and she stormed off.

Valerie rushed to the room the housekeeper had pointed at.

Mr. Bronswell, the butler, was outside William's room. He quickly greeted the couple when he saw them.

"Mr. Kieran, Ms. Valerie, shouldn't you be in your room? Why are you out here?"

"I want to see Mr. William. He went back on his word," Valerie replied.

"Mr. William is asleep. I'm sure it can wait until tomorrow."

Just then, William's voice came from inside his room. "Tell them to wait for me in the study."

Five minutes later, William appeared in the study with a cardigan draped over his shoulders.

The newlyweds were seated on the couch. Valerie was fuming while Kieran was looking at her, taking in how furious she was.

His eyes narrowed. He wasn't sure why her first instinct had been to look for William when she heard that Wood Corporation would be acquired.

"What seems to be the problem?" William asked.

Valerie got up and walked over to William. "Mr. William, you promised that the Kingsleys would never harm my family."

William looked at Kieran, who sat calmly on the couch. He knew his son's personality well and had a feeling what this was about.

"Please leave. I'll talk to Kieran."

Valerie had caused such a ruckus to get an audience with him, but he was asking her to leave before she could even say anything!

She usually knew when she wasn't wanted and would normally leave. However, this time, it concerned her family.

Besides, she didn't want her sacrifice to be in vain. Before, Wood Corporation was at risk of going bankrupt if she didn't agree to the marriage. But now that she had already married Kieran, Wood Corporation was still at risk!

"Mr. William, if you can't stay true to your word, then I won't stay true to mine either!"

"Get out!" William roared.

Valerie clenched her fists and left.

Then, William turned to Kieran. "Take your order back. You're not allowed to mess with the Woods."

"Dad, what leverage does she have over you?" Kieran asked.

"Don't make me repeat myself, Kieran. If I ever find you plotting against the Woods, I won't let it slide," William threatened.

Kieran rarely ever heard his Dad sound so strict. It piqued his interest. "I'm curious as to what secrets the two of you are keeping from me."
