Chapter 0007

Kieran called his assistant in front of William and retracted his order on the acquisition of Wood Corporation.

Kieran got to his feet and said, "Don't expect me to treat her well. She doesn't deserve it."

After that, he walked out of the study. Outside, he saw Valerie leaning against the wall.

With barely restrained patience, Valerie glared back at him in anger. He just left after glancing at her.

Valerie entered the study after he left. "Mr. William, you told me that as long as I agreed to the marriage—"

Before she could finish her sentence, William interrupted her coldly. "Next time, don't ever bring this matter up at home. Wood Corporation is safe now, and Kieran won't do anything like that again."

He was just about to leave when Valerie blocked his path. "Your word doesn't count anymore. I want a physical contract."

Even Mr. Bronswell was stunned by that. She was practically saying that Mr. William wasn't a trustworthy man!

No one would react nicely when someone questioned their integrity. The haughty William Kingsley was clearly no exception.

Valerie was just a young woman, but she had the guts to demand a contract from him. His expression darkened.

Mr. Bronswell immediately tried to smooth things over. He knew how foul William's temper could be, and he was worried that William would yell at Valerie and scare her away.

"Ms. Valerie, Mr. William is a man of his word. You'll come to see that in time. Since he has said that he will protect your family, nothing bad will happen to them.

"There's no need for a physical contract. You're a Kingsley now, so you're a part of the family. A contract would harm the familial bond."

After that, Mr. Bronswell shot her a look, warning her to just let the matter slide.

Valerie knew that Mr. Bronswell was doing this for her sake, so she stayed silent.

On the other hand, William stormed out of the study.

In his bedroom, William huffed. "If it hadn't been for the words, why would I have ever allowed someone like her to marry into my family?"

Mr. Bronswell tried to calm William down.

"Don't be upset. Ms. Valerie is still young and has a fiery personality. Even if no one else knows why she married into your family, you and I know the truth.

"When I put myself in her shoes, I understand why she's acting like this. After all, she is a Wood, and Mr. Kieran had just threatened to acquire her family business on her wedding night. She's just worried about her family."

Mr. Bronswell's words were able to slightly quell the anger in William's heart.

William ordered, "Send people to guard their room. Don't let anything else happen tonight."

"I understand."

Meanwhile, Valerie knew that she had upset Mr. William by asking for a contract. Still, she couldn't help but worry.

What if William forgot about their arrangement one day?

But she knew better than to look for him again.

As she was walking, Valerie heard the sound of an argument coming from downstairs.

She curiously went to the staircase railing and peered down to see that it was Kieran.

Kieran wanted to leave, but Mr. Bronswell and Martin were trying to stop him.

"Mr. Kieran, tonight is your wedding night. You should be with Ms. Valerie. It's bad luck for the groom to be out on his wedding night."

The housekeepers had told Mr. Bronswell that Kieran wanted to leave, so he had rushed over to stop him.

As for Martin, he had also been about to leave the house when he bumped into Kieran. So he tried to stop his brother as well.

"Kieran, you're already nearing your 30s. Can you be more mature? Valerie is your wife. You have to take responsibility for her. If you leave her tonight, how will she be able to maintain her dignity in this household?"

"Martin, even if I don't know why I had to get married to her, I'm sure you do. I only got married because I was ordered to!

"So I'm not obligated to consummate my marriage. Don't try to stop me from leaving. You won't be able to succeed anyway."

Kieran tried to leave again, but Martin blocked his path. "Valerie is looking at you from the second floor."

Kieran raised his head and saw her standing by the railing. She was still in her evening dress.

He swallowed drily when he looked at her. Then, he pushed Martin aside and left without another word.
