*Six's POV*
I can’t help but feel bad that I assumed Axle wasn’t smart because of a 3 minute conversation about him. I mean, I know almost nothing about the guy, and here I am judging him. I hate when people do that to me. I’m sure the second everyone here found out I was from WestSide, they assumed I was some trouble maker with a record.
After school, Cleo, Lexi and I meet up with Nate and Drew in the parking lot and I say, “So, apparently Liz is having a party Friday. Is that a thing you guys would normally go to or what?”
“Yeah, I mean everyone usually goes. How did you hear about it?”
“Axle mentioned it.”
“He did, did he?” Cleo asks while wiggling her eyebrows.
“Yes," I reply with an eye roll.
“Oh, he’s definitely trying to get in your pants. I’m not surprised though. To quote Mean Girls, you’re a ‘regulation hottie.’ What did you tell him?” Cleo asks.
“I said I would consider it.”
“Alright well, we are definitely going, which means you are coming with us.”
“I want to, I just have to make sure my neighbour can watch my brother for the night.”
“Your parents can’t watch him?” Lexi asks.
“Um, no. They can’t,” I say, rather cryptically.
“Oh. Okay, well hopefully you can come!” She says.
“Yeah, me too. I really do want to come.”
When I get home that night I ask Shaunice about Friday and of course she is more than happy to watch Theo. For real, I do not know what I would do without her.
The rest of the week passes by fairly quickly and I find that the project with Axle is going surprisingly well. I’ve also begun helping him with calculus. I think that his learning style is really just not compatible with the way the teacher explains things because he actually seems to catch on quickly when I explain it to him. That or he's pretending to not understand so I'll come help him.
On Friday after school, Cleo tells me to dress sexy, as though I’ve never been to a party before. I wear a black lace tank top tucked into a black leather skirt and put some dark red lipstick on with fake eyelashes.
I go check in with Shaunice before I leave. When she opens the door, she says, “Damn girl, you look hot.”
“Thanks Shaunice. You’re sure you’re good with Theo for the night?”
“Yes, of course, they’re already passed out.”
“Okay, I have my cell phone if anything comes up.”
“Are you driving?”
“Just to my friend’s house and then we’re taking a cab from there.”
“Okay, be safe.”
“I will,” I say and walk out and drive to Cleo’s. When I pull up at the address she gave me, I’m a bit overwhelmed at the mansion in front of me. There are literally pillars around the front porch. I park in the driveway and knock on the door. Cleo answers and hugs me tight and I can smell the alcohol on her.
“Oh, hello, I see you got a head start,” I say with a grin.
“Yes, so you need to catch up,” she says and leads me past the curved staircase to the kitchen where I see Lexi, Drew, Nate and Luna looking equally as intoxicated.
“Six!” They all shout at the same time. Oh boy. They only make me take two shots before the cab gets here to take us to the party.
When we roll up, the party seems to be well underway. This house is just as impressive as Cleo’s. We head into the backyard to find a keg and a plastic table filled with hard liquor. As I’m filling up a plastic cup at the keg, I feel someone walk up behind me.
“You came.” Of course it’s Axle.
“Yeah, I did,” I say, turning around to face him. He looks fairly sober, which is surprising considering 95% of the people here are plastered already. I catch him scanning his eyes up and down my body before saying, “You look incredible.”
“Thank you,” I say awkwardly. I don’t say it, but he looks good too. He looks better in a black t-shirt and jeans than any person should have a right to. He goes over to the table and pours out two tequila shots. “Do a shot with me?” he asks.
I just nod and take the tiny plastic cup from him. I down the shot, maintaining eye contact the entire time. I put the cup down and then just as I look up, some girl I don’t know comes up and glues herself to his side and says, “Here you are. I was looking for you baby,” while rubbing a hand up and down his chest and kissing his neck. I roll my eyes and walk away to go find my friends.
They decide we’re going to join a game of flip cup, so we head over and start playing. None of these people are particularly good at it. I’m pretty sure they’ve already had too much to drink to have any kind of hand-eye coordination.
*Six's POV*After a few rounds of flip cup, I get frustrated by it because, though I’ll never admit it out loud, I am an extremely competitive person so watching my own team drop the cup that many times was not a good time at all. As I’m making my way back to the keg for a refill, I see Axle holding a pitcher underneath it.I walk up and say, “What, the cups weren’t big enough for you?”He looks up at me and says, “It’s actually for the beer pong table, but maybe I'll take that idea for future parties.”“Oh, no that wasn’t a suggestion. It’s clearly a terrible idea. The already lack of carbonation from the shitty keg beer would disappear much too fast for you to be able to drink it and then the last h
*Axle's POV*We play one more game of beer pong and, when Cam and I win again, that puts us up 5 games and we all agree to call it and head into the dance floor. All the guys want to find their hookups for the night.“You gonna go find Six?” Jameson asks.“Obviously.”I walk into the house just in time to see her walking towards the bathroom. My body follows her in and before I can consider whether or not this is a smart idea, I have her pushed up against the bathroom door and bring my lips down onto hers. Her hands come up behind my neck and it’s clear she wants this just as bad as I do.I wrap my hands around her back to cup her ass and pull her against me. My hands make their way d
*Six's POV*When I walk down the hall and see Axle coming out of the closet with that girl from the party, my heart clenches, but I just keep walking. I knew what he was like before I even met him, so this doesn’t surprise me. What does surprise me is how much it stings. The walk to class gives me enough time to place a mask of cool indifference on my face that I use whenever shit seems to be going downhill in my life. Thanks to my mother, I've had lots of practice with it.When he sits down beside me, I say, “Supply closet. Classy,” before I can stop myself. Using sarcasm as a defense mechanism is also something I do often.“Are you jealous?”I laugh and say, “No.” I can&
*Six's POV*The next day during calculus, things seem to be fairly normal between Axle and I, which disappoints me more than it should.Walking into Chemistry, I know we’ve got our first actual lab today, which I’m actually kind of excited about. I walk up to the bench and Emmett, the guy who usually sits at my bench, comes over.We haven’t spoken too much, but all of our interactions have been pleasant enough. He’s on the football team and he's tall with light brown hair that’s just long enough to show a few waves. Objectively, he’s very attractive with his blue eyes, dimples and boyish smile. He’s not really my type though. He’s way too pretty.“Hey,” he says, flashing me a smile.
*Axle's POV*At lunch Tuesday, I sit down and almost immediately Ethan says, “So have you heard about Emmett and Six?” My head snaps up.“What about them?”“I heard from Liz who heard from someone on the football team that he asked her out and she said yes.” I consider momentarily that it could be a rumour. But why does it matter? I am trying to convince myself that I don’t care when Jameson says, “Bro, you’re gonna break a tooth if you keep clenching your jaw like that. If you care this much just go talk to her.”“I don’t care,” I say as I glare at him.“Who are you trying to convince? Us or you?”
*Six's POV*When my phone rings in class and I see the caller ID for Theo’s school pop up, I panic as my brain runs through a million worst case scenarios in a split second and I run out of the room as I answer the phone. “Hello?”“Hi, is this Miss Laura Keller?”“Is Theo okay?”“Yes he’s fine. Who am I speaking to?” I breathe out. Thank God.“I’m his sister.”“Oh, okay I’m Mia Fisher, Theo’s teacher. Does your mother have a number I could reach her at? This is the only one we have on file.”“No she doesn’t, but you c
*Six's POV*After I leave Theo on thursday morning, I’m pretty emotionally drained and I’m thankful that my day is rather uneventful. On Friday during chemistry, Emmett confirms our date and I tell him I’ll meet him at his house and 5 so that we can go together. He had offered to come pick me up at mine but I was, quite frankly, embarrassed about my living situation.Axle has been acting like nothing happened between us, and I’m not quite sure what to make of it. I decide for now that ignorance is bliss. After school Friday, I stop in at Shaunice’s to say hi before I go get ready. What does one wear to a dinner date with an affluent football player? I settle on a baby pink tank top tucked into a pleated black skirt and thro
*Axle's POV*When she tells me what that sorry excuse for a human said to her, it takes all of my self-control to not go inside and beat the shit out of him. The only reason I don’t is because I feel like, in this moment, she needs me. Or maybe I’m just using that as an excuse. Either way, I will beat the shit out of him later. I take her hand and we start walking away from the school. I lace our fingers together and I can tell she’s a bit surprised by this but doesn’t stop me.“So, I’m curious, why didn’t you just tell everyone you didn’t sleep with him?”She shrugs and says, “If it came down to my word against his, I knew which one of us people would believe. So I decided to make him regret it instead.&
