Jay – POV

The first few months after Steven’s birth were chaos. Beautiful, sleepless chaos.

River was still healing, her body tender, her energy unpredictable. I took over whatever I could. Diapers, bottle prep, midnight rocking—I fumbled at first, but I learned. Fast.

And I didn’t just do them because they needed doing. I did them because I wanted to.

There was something sacred in those small things. Warming a bottle while the moon hung low. Pacing the floor with Steven nestled against my chest. Feeling his heartbeat slow against mine as he drifted off.

He wasn’t mine. Not by blood. Not by bond.

But from the first time he wrapped those impossibly tiny fingers around mine, I was done for.

The world narrowed to him. To River.
