Chapter 1

Author: Mountain River
The entire pack knows that my Alpha mate, Cassian Blackhowl, treasures me more than his own life. Against everyone's objections, he chooses me, an Omega, to be his mate.

Before we form a mate bond, I suffer from a blood disease and hover at death's door.

Cassian searches the world, draining his fortune, just to find someone with a blood type that matches mine so that I can have a transfusion to save my life. He stays by my bedside for months, never leaving, until I finally recover.

But after we form a mate bond, I'm unable to conceive a pup.

Cassian simply smiles and says, "Then I'll just have to try harder until you get pregnant."

We get lost in our acts of passion more frequently until I finally carry a pup. However, I lose the pup, and the cycle repeats. Each time, the agony tears through me like my body is being ripped apart, leaving me weaker and weaker.

Seeing me in such torment, Cassian gathers me into his arms. "Let's not try for a pup anymore. We can always adopt one."

Five years pass, and just as he once promised, he makes me the most envied she-wolf in the pack.

But on the very day of our five-year bond anniversary, I receive a message. It's an invitation to a pup's birthday party.

The message is withdrawn almost instantly, but not before I see the names of the parents—Cassian Blackhowl and Elara Wolfhart.

I stand there, frozen stiff.

Cassian is my mate. My Alpha. My life.

And Elara is the she-wolf who once saved me with her blood.

...

Was it a coincidence? I kept telling myself that there were many wolves with the same name. It didn't necessarily have to be my mate, Cassian Blackhowl.

A shrill ringtone shattered my thoughts.

Silas Ironpaw, Cassian's Beta, cried out in a panicked voice, "Luna! The Alpha is in trouble! He was ambushed by a rogue and is now at the pack infirmary!"

My chest tightened. I dropped everything and dashed over.

But right at the entrance of the infirmary, a new guard stopped me. "Sorry, the Alpha is being treated right now. No outsiders are allowed inside."

"I'm not an outsider," I blurted out. "I'm his mate, Kaia Duskfang."

The guard froze. He narrowed his eyes, looking at me with utter confusion. "How… odd. A she-wolf who claims to be the Alpha's mate has already gone in."

"What?"

I stood rooted to the spot, my hands and feet instantly turning icy cold. After I collected myself, I shakily pulled a moonstone ring—the symbol of the true Luna—from my bag.

The guard's expression shifted uneasily. His gaze flickered from me to the ring before he finally stepped aside. "Go ahead, Luna."

As I passed him, I heard his bewildered mutter. "But… how can there be two Lunas?"

I barely registered his words because of the chaos that raged in my head. Just as I reached out to push the door to Cassian's ward, I heard voices from inside.

"Get out! Why did you come without permission? Have you forgotten my orders?" It was Cassian's voice, devoid of all geniality and instead brimming with anger.

A moment later, the soft, alluring voice of a she-wolf was heard. There was a tremble in her voice as she said, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have come. But when I heard you were injured, I couldn't help myself. I had to see you, to make sure you were alive. Will you please forgive me, darling?"

After a few seconds of silence, Cassian's tone softened slightly, though it remained cold. "I'll let things slide this time. But don't ever do something like this again. You know that Kaia must never know about you."

As I stood outside the door, I felt an iciness run from my head down to the very tip of my toes. Who was this she-wolf? Why couldn't I know about her?

Suddenly, the name on the invitation flashed through my mind. But how could that be?

I stood motionless with my palm still pressed against the doorframe as if it were the only thing holding me up.

Cassian spoke again. "You should go. I'll be leaving soon too."

The she-wolf's voice cracked with emotion. "Your wounds are still bleeding. You shouldn't be moving.

"Do you love Kaia so much that you'd risk going to the caves beneath the cliffs alone just to get her a gift? That's the only reason why the rogue had a chance to ambush you! You almost died! And now, you want to go back just to celebrate your anniversary with her?"

Cassian's reply was clear and firm. "Of course. She's my life. My wolf fights for her alone."

My heart twisted with conflicting emotions. For years, those words had been my pillar, my faith. But now, I found it hard to believe.

I hurriedly stumbled away before anyone inside could notice me.

Back at home, I stared at the moonstone ring on my finger and couldn't stop the tears from falling.

Cassian loved me. This was something the entire pack knew.

Back when I was dying from that rare blood disease, I had tried to drive him away with cruel words. But he had only held me tighter with red-rimmed eyes.

"You're not going anywhere without my permission, Kaia. Not even death can take you from me. My life is only complete because of you. I'd be nothing without you."

He had sold everything he owned, begged every healer, and even scaled the impossibly high Sacred Mountain with his bare hands to beg the Moon Goddess to cure me.

In the five years we'd been mates, his love for me had never lessened. But how could someone who loved me so deeply betray me?

Could I be… mistaken?

Another month passed, yet Cassian still hadn't left.He lingered like a silent shadow, following me from a distance. He watched as I grew closer to Leander and as my flower shop thrived. But he never once took a step closer. One day, I went into the forest as usual to gather some fresh flowers. Just as I bent down to cut a stalk of violet, several dark figures emerged from the surroundings, encircling me. They were a group of rogues. Their eyes were filled with bloodthirsty greed, their hands clutching daggers that gleamed with a silvery glint. A familiar figure from the pack stepped forward. It was Elara. She looked much more disheveled, and there was a vicious scar marring her face. Her eyes were filled with venomous hatred and madness."It's been a long time, Kaia." She licked her lips and added in a shrill voice, "Didn't expect to meet me again, did you?"My chest tightened, though outwardly, I maintained a calm facade. "What are you doing here?""What am I doing here?" Elar

The air in the neutral territory was like a mix of fresh bread and damp earth. Everything here moved at a leisurely pace, a stark contrast to the pack's rigid, fast-paced life.Cassian spotted the flower shop immediately.I stood right there at the doorway, bathed in sunlight. I was wearing jeans and a simple button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled to my elbows, revealing my slender but strong arms.I was talking to a she-wolf who had a pup in her arms. There was a smile on my face, one that Cassian had never seen before. It was relaxed, bright, and without a trace of worry. A young werewolf walked out of the shop, holding a watering can. He handed it to me naturally. We shared a look and smiled, a tacit understanding passing between us.Cassian's gaze froze. He watched as I took the can and watered the hydrangeas by the door with practiced ease. The water droplets refracted tiny sparks of light in the sun.I looked alive again. Here, away from him, I had found my own way to l

After leaving Thalia's place, Cassian went straight to Elara's home. His car screeched to a halt in front of her house. He shoved the door open and got out with such haste that he even forgot to turn off the engine.Elara answered the door in a silk slip dress. The instant she saw him, her eyes lit up with delight and triumph. She thought my departure had finally made him see who he should truly value."Cassian, you finally came. I knew you—" Her words were cut short by the sharpness in his gaze."Daddy!" Elias ran out, eagerly throwing himself at Cassian.Cassian stiffened for a moment. He lowered his gaze to the pup who had been calling him "Daddy" for years, and at that moment, it struck him as the cruelest mockery of all.He did not bend down to scoop Elias up as he always had. Instead, he just stood there, expressionless.Elias' smile froze on his face, and he looked up at Cassian, confused and unsure.Sensing something was wrong, Elara quickly pulled Elias behind her, for

I rented a small storefront along a street in the distant neutral territory and started a flower shop. My neighbors were warm and genuine. The lady from the bakery next door would bring over freshly baked bread, and the elderly man from the fruit stall would press slightly bruised but still sweet and crisp fruit into my hands. Surrounded by such pure kindness, my nerves that had been wound tight for five years finally eased."Kaia, the flower rack looks a bit wobbly," a cheerful male voice called from the doorway.I turned and saw Leander Darkclaw, a carpenter. He wore a simple white T-shirt, with a few flecks of sawdust still caught in his hair. His smile was brighter than the sunlight outside the window. He was a well-known carpenter in the area, skilled in his craft and always ready to help. Two days ago, when my door hinge broke, he took the initiative to fix it for me and refused a single coin in return."Really?" I walked over and shook the shelf. Sure enough, it wobbled.

When I saw Thalia's message, I immediately called her back. My voice shook uncontrollably as I asked, "Is it true? What you said… Is that true? Cassian, he..."A sigh came from the other end of the line. "It's true, Luna. The Alpha… He was born infertile. I was the healer who delivered him back then. Ingrid, his mother, had begged me to keep it a secret. She didn't want this to affect him for the rest of his life."No wonder Cassian and I had never conceived a pup. It had never been my problem. It was his. With this final confirmation, I got the answer to my last lingering doubt."Thank you for telling me the truth, but please don't address me as Luna anymore. From today on, I'm no longer the Luna of this pack. I'm leaving for neutral territory, and I won't ever be coming back."Thalia sighed again. "It seems this issue has caused trouble for you, after all."I smiled bitterly but said nothing more before ending the call. If Cassian was infertile… then how did the pup I saw ye

My fingers dug deep into the rough tree bark as splinters pricked my palms. But the physical pain was nothing compared to the agony tearing me apart inside.I wanted to flee that suffocating place, but my feet felt as though they were rooted to the ground. I could not move. All I could do was stand frozen, listening to the sounds of their ragged breathing echoing in my ears.I had no idea how long I stood there before a fine drizzle began to fall from the sky. Through the soft patter of rain, Elara's languid, satisfied voice drifted out. "It's Elias' birthday tomorrow. He really wants you here. Can you do that for him, just this once?"Cassian said nothing and walked straight into the bathroom. When he emerged, he was dressed in fresh clothes that were identical to the ones he had arrived in. He left without a word. I could no longer distinguish the rain on my face from my tears. I took out my phone and sent Cassian a message, asking him to bring me supper from a part of the terri
