Chapter 1

I looked down at my completely flat stomach.

Several girls surrounded Donna Shaw, who was crying so hard she could barely catch her breath.

She covered her face, sobbing, "I saw her throw up in the restroom several times… I thought she just had a stomach problem…"

Her roommate, Ivy Dunham, immediately jumped in. "Donna, you're too kind! Someone like her should be exposed!"

The crowd became even more worked up.

"How disgusting. She's just a freshman, and she's already pregnant?"

"No wonder she was always alone. She must have had something to hide."

"Expel her! She should be expelled!"

Donna lifted her head. Her eyes were red, and her voice shook. "I didn't mean to reveal her secret… I'm just… We can't accept people like her into our club. I'm scared she'll be a bad influence on the other students…"

Every word Donna spoke, and every expression she made, struck the right emotional chord with the onlookers.

Someone tapped me on the shoulder.

I looked up.

A young man wearing a Student Activities Board uniform stood before me, an ID badge hanging from his chest.

He was Henry Baker, a junior and the president of the Student Activities Board. He was also Donna's boyfriend.

His expression was stern. "I'm the president of the Student Activities Board. This is a serious matter that reflects badly on the school. Please come with me to the office."

I didn't move. Instead, I said, "I have a question."

Henry frowned. "What question?"

I glanced at Donna. What I said next wasn't loud, but everyone could hear me. "You said I'm pregnant. How did you know? Are you a doctor, or do you have X-ray vision?"

Donna's sobbing stopped for a split second. Then she wailed even harder, collapsing against Ivy.

"You! Why won't you just admit it? I saw you throwing up in the restroom…"

Ivy snapped, "That's enough! Donna tried to help you out of kindness, and this is how you repay her?"

The crowd started getting worked up again.

"Exactly. Donna was only trying to help her, and she acted like this."

"How ungrateful of her."

Abby Gellar, our counselor, pushed her way through the crowd. "Everyone, come with me to the office."

I nodded and followed her. My fingers brushed against my phone screen inside my pocket. The recording was still running.

A girl. They thought I was a girl.

Donna had assumed I was a girl, so she'd made up this pregnancy accusation. She'd chosen something a girl would inevitably be condemned for.

But she didn't know that I wasn't a girl. She'd played the wrong card.

Before I pushed open the office door, I touched the note in my pocket. The handwriting was identical to mine, and I couldn't help wondering who had written it.

It didn't matter anymore.

What mattered was that, in a little while, everyone would find out that I was male.

And how exactly was a man supposed to get pregnant?

A week later, Donna and Henry officially withdrew from school. The two of them had one final, messy argument outside the academic affairs office before security escorted them off the grounds. Ms. Gellar was suspended for a month and required to submit a written apology at the department-wide faculty meeting. Meanwhile, the academic affairs office officially confiscated her wooden ruler.Life on campus gradually returned to normal. The clubs were back out recruiting, students were lining up at their respective booths, and fresh promotional banners stretched all along the quad. I stood in the third-floor corridor of the academic building, leaning against the railing and looking down at the lively scene below. My phone buzzed in my pocket with a new message from the class group chat."Drew, I'm sorry for yelling at you on the field that day."More apologetic messages quickly followed.I stared at them for a few seconds, then silenced my phone and put it away. I left them all un

There was a knock on my door that evening.I opened it to find Ms. Gellar standing outside with a takeaway bag in her hand. "Drew, you haven't eaten yet, right?"I paused, caught off guard.A small, awkward smile touched her lips. "I brought you some food from the cafeteria." She stepped inside and set the bag on the table.Neither of us said anything for a while."I'm here to apologize. I was wrong to hit you with the ruler." Her voice shook slightly. "I've been a student counselor for 15 years. I've seen too many students lie and deny everything when cornered. So when I saw the evidence, I jumped to conclusions. I was completely wrong."I looked into her eyes. "Ms. Gellar, please don't use that ruler on anyone ever again."Her face reddened. "I won't. I've already requested a one-month administrative suspension and accepted the school's disciplinary action."I was taken aback. I hadn't expected her to hold herself accountable to that extent. Ms. Gellar looked at me, her e

Donna remained silent. The crowd grew impatient."Donna, say something.""You've put him through hell. Surely there's got to be a reason for it, right?"Donna bit her lip, and the tears started falling again. But this time, no one handed her a tissue. A few of the girls nearby even backed away, as if they didn't want to be associated with her. Henry stood beside her, his face as white as a sheet. He didn't dare say a word, picking nervously at the seam of his pants.Ms. Gellar finally spoke. "Donna, even if you don't tell us, the school will investigate and find out the truth eventually."I chimed in. "You criticized my parents 17 times. "My parents don't really care what I do, but I know the truth is on my side. I also have a lot of money, and trust me, I can afford a damn good legal team. If I wanted to sue you, I could have you behind bars for decades."Donna's body started shaking harder. Then she suddenly looked up, tears pouring down her face. But this wasn't her u

No one said a word on the way back to school."Ms. Gellar, we still haven't settled what happened at the recruitment fair. They accused me of being pregnant in front of so many people. I can't just let this slide."Ms. Gellar frowned. "What do you want to do?""Go back there and set the record straight in front of everyone."Donna's face paled.Henry immediately stepped forward. "Drew, don't go too far…""Too far?" I looked at him. "When you guys claimed that I was pregnant, did you stop to think whether you were going too far?"Ms. Gellar was silent for a few seconds. Then she sighed. "Let's go back to the field."The booths from the recruitment event were still up. Even though half the crowd had dispersed, dozens of students were still milling about. A few recognized me and started whispering."That's her. The one Donna said…""Wait, I heard he's a guy.""A guy? How's that possible?"I walked over to the dance club's booth and turned to face the crowd. "Everyone, Donna

The hallway was completely silent.Ms. Green's words still hung in the air.Donna was the first to snap out of it. Her voice turned shrill. "Impossible! How could she possibly be a guy?"She rushed over and grabbed me by the hair, yanking my head back. "If you're not a girl, then why the hell do you have long hair?"She grabbed my collar next. "If you're not a girl, then why the hell do you dye your hair?"Then she jabbed me in the chest. "If you're not a girl, then why is your voice so soft? Why do you dress in such bright colors?"Donna jabbed me after every sentence, her nails digging into my skin. What the hell? Was this woman crazy? From the moment Donna accused me of being pregnant, I'd felt like the whole world had gone insane.I was just a guy who liked keeping up with trends. So what if my outfit was bold and stylish? Since when did outfits like mine belong exclusively to girls?Henry chimed in, "Yeah, why would a guy have long, purple-dyed hair and wear flashy cloth

The hospital corridor was blindingly white.Donna walked with her arm linked through Ms. Gellar's. Her eyes were red, as if she had suffered a terrible grievance.Henry walked ahead, greeting the staff at the nurses' station. "That girl's behavior is pretty questionable. Can you check whether she's pregnant?"He deliberately enunciated the word "she".The nurse, Ms. Green, looked me over. "Another one of those girls. So young and already getting into trouble."Henry leaned closer and lowered his voice, though it remained loud enough for everyone to hear. "She might not cooperate. You can be a little firm with her. You need to teach her a lesson, or she'll never learn."Ms. Green nodded and grabbed my arm. Her grip was strong, her nails digging into my skin. "Come with me."Donna mumbled, "It's hard on her too. Please don't…"Ms. Gellar sighed. "You're so kind. She doesn't deserve your pity."The door to the ultrasound room closed, and Ms. Green shoved me toward the bed. "Lie
