Chapter 5

Author: Burning Stone
I was well aware that Mom and Dad weren't looking at me; they were looking at an enemy who had killed Asher and was now attempting to steal from them.

Mom and Dad only needed a reason to vent their anger. Neither of them cared if Archer was telling the truth, nor did they give a damn if I was being framed.

But I cared. Asher's death was indeed my fault. Mom and Dad could beat me and curse at me, and I'd take it, but they absolutely couldn't slander me. "It wasn't me! I didn't do it! It was Archer—"

My attempt to defend myself only seemed to fan the flames of Dad's fury. He grabbed a wooden club and swung it at me. "Ash died saving you, yet you're stealing from your own family? We don't raise thieves in this house!"

The moment Asher was mentioned, tears cascaded down my face. "I didn't do it! If Asher were still here, he would believe me!"

God, what I'd give to have Asher back. If he were still here, I would undoubtedly be the happiest person on earth. He would take me out for delicious food and buy me my favorite toys.

Most of all, he would protect me. He would lay down his life to shield me from even the slightest harm.

But the more beautiful the fantasy, the harsher the reality. More often than not, I wished Asher hadn't saved me. He should've just let those human traffickers kidnap me. I'd probably be better off right now.

"How dare you bring up your brother!"

Blows rained down upon my body. Clenching my jaw, I took the beating without making a sound.

Mom looked at me with pure, unadulterated hatred. "How could your worthless life ever compare to your brother's? You worthless piece of trash, you're nothing more than a plaything we created for Ash. If your brother hadn't pleaded with us for a younger sister when he was a child, we would never have brought you into this world!"

As it turned out, Asher was the only one who had ever wanted me to come into this world. I had no idea I was merely a plaything for him.

"You're right, you never should've had me. I, too, wish I could trade my life to bring Asher back..."

Dad's hand froze in midair, as if I'd struck a chord.

Archer hurriedly stepped forward. "Don't hit Phoebe anymore, Dad. It's all my fault. I'm her older brother, yet I didn't raise her right. If Asher were still here, Phoebe wouldn't have turned out like this."

Dad, who had just been lost in thought, instantly snapped back to reality. His eyes went cold again. "It's not your fault, Archer. She was born evil. She already took Asher from us. I won't let her stay here and ruin your life, too!"

With that, he raised his club again, beating me within an inch of my life. I curled into a ball on the floor, shielding my head, as pain pulsed through every single part of my body.

The metallic tang of blood in my mouth intensified until I coughed up a mouthful of blood onto the floor. Eventually, I could no longer feel the pain.

I noticed Archer flash me a triumphant smirk, as if he were gloating, "Once you die, everything in the Sullivan family will be mine!"

But was I really about to die? As my mind started shutting down, I knew I was drifting off into a sleep from which I would never awaken.

Right then, a young man who looked like a carbon copy of Asher suddenly pushed the front door open. "Pheebs…" It was that familiar voice, that familiar face.

The wooden club clattered heavily onto the floor. Mom's and Dad's eyes widened in unison, freezing in disbelief.

I stared blankly at him, and for the first time in five long years, a genuine smile broke across my face. "Asher... you're back!"

Asher took my hand and said, "It's time for us to go. I'll always be by your side."Slowly, our figures began to fade, turning transparent. Mom threw herself at us when she witnessed that. "Pheebs!"The blood drained from Dad's face. "No, this can't be happening. They were right here... How could this be…""Open your eyes and look at me, Pheebs! You're just asleep. You're just trying to scare me, right?" Mom no longer cared about appearances as she held my lifeless body and began to confess her sins. "I'll never reprimand you again. I'll never hit you again. I'll never take my anger out on you because of your brother again. Please just look at me, okay?"Dad—a man who had only ever shed tears for Asher—actually shed tears for me too. The towering man knelt right beside my corpse, slamming his fists against the floor to vent his overwhelming remorse. His tears dripped onto the blood-soaked floor, soaking into the blood that had already dried. But Mom, Dad... I could no longer se

Dad couldn't take it anymore. He was so angry that he shook like a leaf, his chest heaving as he kicked Archer right in the stomach. "Shut the hell up!"However, beneath his furious outburst, a stark, unmistakable terror painted his face. He was afraid Asher would find out the truth and be disappointed in them.Doubled over in pain, Archer clutched his abdomen and sank to his knees on the floor. Yet, the madness in his eyes only intensified. "You're actually afraid. What's the point of being scared now? Both of you let me get away with everything I did back then. Her injuries were inflicted by your own hands!"Mom had dissolved into tears. Covering her mouth, she shook her head frantically as she looked at Asher, as if denying it could rewrite history and undo the horrors they had inflicted upon me. Asher lunged forward and slapped Archer across the face. His hands balled into fists. "I'll make all of you pay for this!" He helped me up from the couch, where I had been watching t

Sensing that I was about to reveal the truth, Mom hurriedly cut me off. "Pheebs, you were just discharged from the hospital, and you haven't fully recovered yet. Hurry up and go back to your room to get some rest!"Dad immediately chimed in. "That's right. Go on in. Don't just stand there." With that, they walked around Archer and ushered Asher and me inside.Staring at the backs of the four of us, Archer could no longer hide the resentment burning in his eyes. At this point, he already understood what was going on. Asher was back. From now on, how could there possibly be a place for him in this home? Once we reached the living room, Asher guided me to the couch and helped me settle in. The home he once knew so well was no longer the place in his memories. The spot that once held a photograph of our family of four had been supplanted by a portrait of just the three of them—Archer, Mom, and Dad. Even the wall where my drawing awards used to hang was now covered with Archer's profe

When I came to, the first thing I saw was Asher's weary face. His eyes were heavily bloodshot, brimming with concern for me. "You're awake, Pheebs! How are you feeling? Does it hurt?" Looking into his eyes, everything from the past felt like a bad dream. It felt as though none of those horrible things had ever happened—Asher hadn't died saving me, Mom and Dad hadn't adopted Archer, and the four of us were still a happy family. Noticing that I was still zoning out, Asher started panicking again. "Are you still in pain, Pheebs? I'll get the doctor for you!" With that, he spun on his heel to run out of the ward.Reality finally crashed over me. This wasn't a dream; Asher was really back. "Don't go, Asher! Don't leave me!"After hearing my cry, he turned right back around. I hastily threw my arms around him, pouring my heart out about how much I'd missed him. Asher, too, held me tightly. He still didn't know the whole story, but he knew with absolute certainty that his younger si

Sporting limited-edition Cobes on his feet, Asher hurried up to me. He didn't seem to care that my blood was staining his pristine white shirt. "Pheebs, what happened to you? Pheebs? Mom, Dad, why'd you hit Pheebs?"Asher was dressed in the same outfit he wore the day he died. Gazing at him, I honestly thought I was dreaming. I goggled at him, and for a moment, it was as if I couldn't even feel the excruciating pain racking my body. Asher looked a little disoriented himself. Taking in my battered and bruised condition, he had no idea what was going on, but he immediately rushed over to check on me. "Call an ambulance! Quickly, save my sister!" He frantically searched for a phone to call emergency services, yet he didn't forget to comfort me. "Hang in there, Pheebs. I'm here. I won't let anything happen to you!" His gorgeous face was soaked with tears. Mom and Dad, who had come to their senses, reached out to confirm whether their precious son had truly returned. Asher, however,
