I meant it seriously, but part of me expected him to laugh or brush it off. Instead, he exhaled deeply, and I caught him in the corner of my eye pinching the bridge of his nose like he was already tired of where this conversation was going.

“You’re going to ask me uncomfortable things like that, then get depressed about it later?” he said.
