Halloway's House

last update Fecha de publicación: 2026-09-19 18:25:57

Two days into the four Halloway had left them, Adrian's men found the location, a converted warehouse near the old shipyards, guarded but not fortified the way the pier had been. Ivy stood at the edge of the war room table again, watching Adrian trace a new route in red ink, this time with none of the confidence from the first plan.

"We're not walking into another trap," he said, more to himself than to the men around him. "Whatever we do here, it has to be smarter than last time."

"We could wait him out," one of the men offered. "Let him come to us instead. Our walls, our terms."

"He gave us four days for a reason." Adrian's jaw tightened. "If we don't move first, he decides the terms of the next confrontation, not us. I'm done letting him dictate the pace of this."

Ivy leaned over the map, studying the layout of the warehouse, something clicking into place that made her stomach turn. "There's a smaller building here, behind the main one. What is it."

One of the men checked his notes. "Storage, according to city records. Unused for years."

"That's where they're keeping something," Ivy said slowly. "Or someone."

Adrian's eyes met hers, understanding dawning at the same pace. "You think Halloway's holding hostages."

"I think a man who built an entire scheme around leverage doesn't stop at just using my father." Ivy's voice steadied even as her hands didn't. "If there's a building on his property nobody's supposed to know about, it's not empty."

Adrian turned to his men, decision settling into his features fast and hard. "Change of plan. We hit the storage building first, quiet, before we ever engage the main warehouse. If Ivy's right, whoever's in there might be the only leverage we have against him that he doesn't expect us to find."

They moved that night, Ivy staying back in the car again, this time without arguing, watching from a distance as Adrian's men slipped through the dark toward the smaller building at the edge of Halloway's compound. The radio crackled every few minutes, updates too clipped for her to follow, until one came through that made the guard beside her go rigid.

"Sir. You need to see this."

Twenty minutes later, Adrian returned to the car, and Ivy barely recognized the expression on his face, something between fury and disbelief that she'd never seen from him before.

"What did you find," she asked.

"Not what." Adrian's voice was tight, controlled in the particular way that meant he was holding something back from breaking completely. "Who."

Behind him, two of his men emerged from the dark, half carrying, half supporting a woman between them, thin and pale, blinking hard against even the faint moonlight like she hadn't seen open sky in longer than made sense.

Ivy's breath caught. "Who is she."

Adrian didn't answer right away, watching the woman being helped into the second car with something raw and complicated working behind his eyes.

"Her name is Elena," he said finally, quiet enough that Ivy almost missed it over the sound of her own pulse. "She used to work for my mother, years ago. I thought she left the city after my mother died. I never imagined Halloway had her."

"Why would he keep her hidden this long."

Adrian's jaw worked, something dark and afraid settling into his expression for the first time since Ivy had met him. "Because she knows something about my mother's death that I was never told the truth about. Something Halloway's apparently been sitting on for years, waiting for the right moment to use it."

The pieces shifted in Ivy's mind, uneasy and half formed. "You think that's what this was really about. Not just territory. Not just me."

"I think Halloway's spent longer building this than either of us understood." Adrian looked toward the second car, where Elena sat wrapped in a blanket, still trembling, still blinking like the dark had taught her something about light she couldn't unlearn. "And I think whatever she knows is about to change everything I thought I understood about my own family."

They drove back to the estate in near silence, Elena tucked safely in the second car under guard, Ivy watching Adrian's profile the whole way, the muscles in his jaw working like he was holding a hundred questions behind his teeth and rationing which ones he let himself ask first.

Marta met them at the door when they arrived, still under watch but permitted to help with the household in limited ways since her confession, and something passed between her and Elena the moment their eyes met, brief and loaded, gone before Ivy could name it.

"You two know each other," Ivy said.

"We worked together once," Marta said carefully. "A long time ago. Before either of you were part of any of this."

Adrian's attention sharpened on that immediately. "How long ago."

"Around the time your mother passed." Marta's eyes dropped, something old and guarded settling over her face. "I didn't know Halloway had her, Adrian. I swear that to you. If I'd known, I would have told you the moment I confessed everything else."

"Would you have." Adrian's voice carried no accusation, just a tired, careful weighing of trust that had already been broken once. "I want to believe that. I'm not sure I fully do yet."

"That's fair," Marta said quietly. "I've earned that."

Elena, still wrapped in the blanket, finally spoke, her voice hoarse from disuse. "Adrian. You look just like her."

Something flickered across his face, grief and hunger for information tangled together in a way Ivy had never seen from him. "You knew my mother well."

"Well enough to know what really happened to her." Elena's eyes moved between Adrian and Ivy, something like relief and dread both crossing her expression at once. "Well enough that Halloway thought keeping me quiet was worth years of his own money and patience."

Ivy stepped closer, some instinct telling her this conversation needed careful ground beneath it before it went any further. "Maybe she should rest first. Whatever she has to say, it'll still be true in the morning."

Adrian looked like he wanted to argue, years of waiting suddenly compressed into an unbearable few more hours, but something in Ivy's steady expression settled him.

"Tomorrow," he agreed, though his eyes never left Elena, like he was afraid she might vanish again the moment he looked away. "First thing. I need to know everything you know."

Elena nodded, exhaustion finally winning out over whatever fear had kept her upright this long, and let herself be led toward one of the guest rooms, Marta trailing behind her with an expression Ivy couldn't quite read.

Later, alone with Adrian in the quiet of the study, Ivy watched him stare at nothing, the weight of everything still sitting unspoken between them.

"You're scared of what she's going to tell you," Ivy said softly.

"Terrified." Adrian rubbed a hand over his face, exhaustion and dread etched into every line of him. "My whole life, I've told myself a story about how my mother died. Simple. Sad. Nobody's fault but time and illness." His voice cracked slightly. "If Halloway thought it was worth years of effort to keep that story buried, it was never that simple at all."

Ivy reached for his hand, holding it steady in both of hers. "Whatever she tells you tomorrow, you won't be facing it alone."

Adrian looked at her then, something raw and grateful passing behind his eyes. "I'm starting to forget what facing anything alone used to feel like."

"Good," Ivy said quietly. "I don't want you to remember

Elena looked steadier by morning, color returned to her face, though her hands still shook faintly around the cup of tea Marta had brought her. Adrian sat across from her at the kitchen table, Ivy beside him, neither of them touching the breakfast Marta had also set out, untouched and cooling."Take your time," Adrian said, though his voice betrayed how little patience he actually had left for waiting.Elena wrapped both hands around her cup, steadying herself. "Your mother didn't die of illness, Adrian. That's the story your father told everyone, the story he made sure stuck. It wasn't true."The room went very still."Then what happened to her." Adrian's voice had gone flat, the particular stillness Ivy had learned meant he was holding something enormous behind a wall of control."She found out things about your father's business that he didn't want anyone knowing. Not outsiders. Not you." Elena's eyes filled, the words clearly costing her years of buried fear to finally say out lou

The drive back from the pier passed in silence, Ivy pressed between two guards who kept glancing at the rearview mirror like Halloway's men might materialize out of the fog behind them. Nobody spoke until the gates of the estate closed behind the car, and even then, Adrian said nothing, jaw locked tight the entire walk into the house."Someone talk to me," Ivy said, finally breaking, following him into the study where the maps from that morning still lay scattered across the desk, useless now. "What happened out there.""We were compromised." Adrian dropped into the chair behind his desk, rubbing both hands over his face. "Someone told Halloway exactly when and where we'd hit him. Which means either Marta lied about how much she'd already given up, or there's a second leak I haven't found yet.""My father was there." Ivy's voice shook, the image of him standing on that dock refusing to leave her mind. "Alive. Walking. Working with the man threatening to kill me.""I know.""You told h

  • Sold To The Mafia King    The Pier

By morning, Adrian's study had turned into a war room, maps of the docks spread across the desk, three of his most senior men standing around it while he traced a finger along a route marked in red."Halloway keeps two boats at the north end," one of the men said, tapping a spot on the map. "If we go in loud, he'll have time to pull back and regroup. If we go in quiet, before dawn, we catch him before his full crew's even awake.""Quiet," Adrian said, no hesitation in it. "I'm not interested in a fair fight. I'm interested in ending this before it costs me anyone else."Ivy stood near the door, arms crossed, waiting for the moment someone would notice her and try to send her out of the room. It came fast."Sir," the second man said carefully, "should she really be hearing all of this.""She stays." Adrian didn't look up from the map. "We had this conversation already."Ivy caught the flicker of surprise on the man's face and felt something steady settle into her chest despite the fear

Marta's room was smaller than Ivy expected, spare and neat, the kind of space that told her almost nothing about the woman who'd lived in it for fifteen years. One of Adrian's men stood beside the open drawer of a nightstand, a burner phone and a small stack of folded papers laid out on the bed like evidence at a trial.Adrian picked up the phone first, scrolling through it with a stillness that scared Ivy more than shouting would have."Messages going back four months," he said, voice flat. "All to the same unregistered number."Marta stood in the doorway behind them, her composure cracking piece by piece, the warmth Ivy had always known from her collapsing into something raw and frightened. "Adrian, please, let me explain before you decide anything.""Explain, then." He didn't look up from the phone. "Start with why.""My son." The words came out broken. "He owes money to a man who works for Halloway. Not a small amount. They threatened him, Adrian, they said if I didn't pass along

Adrian didn't let her see the note again after that first look. He folded it away into his jacket and gave orders instead, calling every man on the grounds inside within minutes, doubling the guard at every entrance, pulling curtains shut on windows that had stayed open since Ivy arrived."Tell me what it said," Ivy said, following him down the hall as he moved from room to room checking locks that were already locked. "All of it. Not the short version.""You heard the short version already.""I want the exact words, Adrian."He stopped in the middle of the hallway, jaw tight, and for a moment she thought he'd refuse again. Instead he pulled the note from his jacket and handed it to her without a word. The handwriting was neat, almost careless in how calm it looked given what it said. Voss. You've grown careless keeping a Marlow under your roof. I'll be collecting what's mine soon enough. Bring her to the old pier by the end of the week, or I'll come for her myself, and you won't like
