I was absent-minded as I sat in front of the marriage documents. My conversation with Cassian's Mother was still replaying in my mind. Spy on her son?

I asked her why.

"I am just worried about him. He has become so lonely, and I fear for his mental health. Cassian changed ever since the accident, and I worry he is not going to get better." She looked genuinely concerned.

That sounded noble enough.

It's not like she would be doing anything wrong if it were for a good cause. It was to calm a Mother.

"Elara? Elara! Where has your mind gone?" My Mother's strict tone snapped me out of my thoughts. She was already glaring at me as everyone looked.

"Oh. Right. Sorry." I said awkwardly as I collected the pen from Cassian, who was giving me a strange look.

It had been a really small affair all right. I was dressed in a simple corporate gown, and only our parents, siblings, and the minister were present.

I looked at the papers. I was signing away my life. No escape. I was becoming the wife of Cassian Rooke. There was no going back.

I gulped as I signed. This was for the children, not for me. I needed to protect them at all costs. It was done.

"It is done. You are now married. Congratulations." He said, plainly taking the signed papers.

Just like that, I was married.

I dreamed about my wedding day so many times. I imagined being whisked off by a Prince in a charming suit, and I in a white ball gown, but none of that was going to happen.

I had been sold to a man I hadn't even had a decent conversation with.

I maintained my smile as the parents congratulated us while our siblings snickered.

The ceremony was held at the Rooke's mansion.

"That is all. Congratulations to you both. I'm sure you will like to be on your own now. I've called for your driver already." Mrs. Rooke said as she walked up to us. She glanced at me briefly, giving me a small smile.

"Elara, dear, be respectful to your husband and try to please him as much as possible." Mom said to me as she hugged me.

Before she pulled back, she whispered something. "Make sure you do your duty and seduce him so you can get pregnant. Don't be totally useless." She pulled back and squeezed my hands as I winced.

The driver pulled up, and soon Cassian and I were in the car on our way to our new home.

The drive took thirty minutes tops, and soon we were driving up a long stone-path driveway that led to a very beautiful mansion straight out of a movie.

I came down and looked around. This was definitely a beautiful place.

I turned to Cassian as we walked inside. "Um... where will I-"

"Isla!" He called out.

A petite young lady rushed up. "Yes, sir?"

"Show the guest to her quarters and prepare dinner earlier. I'm sure she's famished."

At that moment, my stomach growled, and I almost died from embarrassment. It was true though. I had been so nervous that I couldn't eat for fear that I would throw up.

"Of course, sir."

Cassian walked off in what seemed to be his wing and left me with the maid.

"Here, miss. Your quarters are this way." She said a bit nonchalantly.

I watched as she strutted in front of me, not even helping with my bags.

Was that normal?

I panted behind her, dragging my luggage on what seemed to be an endless staircase.

"Here is your room. Dinner is at 7 pm. Don't be late." She pointed at a door, then walked off.

Attitude. Well, I knew living here wouldn't be easy.

I finally collapsed on the bed as I finished unpacking. My room was so spacious compared to my old place. It was terrifying.

I sighed as I looked at the time and saw it was 6 pm already. I needed to get ready.

I hummed as I sat in front of my mirror, brushing my hair. Maybe I could actually grow to like this place.

I stood up at 10 minutes to 7 and made my way downstairs.

The house was as big as a castle. I got lost twice before I finally found my way.

As I finally managed to find my way and got to the dining area, I saw plates being cleared as though someone had just finished eating.

I saw a maid cleaning up.

"Um... where is dinner?" I asked her.

She gave me a look. "Good evening, ma'am. My name is Rose. Dinner is by 6 pm, ma'am. I thought Isla told you. Mr. Rooke has already eaten and retired to his room. He figured you weren't interested in joining him." She said as she finished clearing up.

"Huh? But... But Isla told me dinner was by 7 pm." I said, confused.

"No. It's by 6 pm. Perhaps you misheard."

"No, I didn't."

I realized what had happened. Isla tricked me. I clenched my fists. How could she do that?

"Is there a problem, ma'am? Should I serve your dinner?"

I huffed then nodded. Isla ruined my reputation in front of Cassian. He was going to think I hid from him on purpose.

I ate silently as I thought about how rude I probably looked to Cassian this evening. How would I even go about defending myself? He probably wouldn't even believe me.

I begrudgingly finished eating and tried finding my way to the balcony. I wasn't going to risk asking anyone and end up in the dungeons.

As I finally sat outside, I thought. Now I was married and a member of the Rooke family. On the bright side, my family would no longer be able to hurt me, or at least they would think twice before trying to.

I glanced at my phone as a text popped up. It was from Vivienne.

'I hope you haven't forgotten our arrangement.'

What arrangement? It's not like I agreed. I just sprinted out of there. I sighed as I put the phone down.

I actually had no other choice. If I didn't do as she asked, God knows what she would do, plus it was just a little harmless spying.

I didn't even have to give her anything relevant.

With that decision, I finally decided to go inside and get ready for bed.

I got lost again. Damn it! I tried finding my way, but it wasn't easy, especially with all the lights turned off.

I finally found my room and hurriedly went in. I needed to sleep.

As I sat down, I noticed something by my bed stand.

Waiting neatly on the bedside table was a black leather book.

Stamped in silver across the front:

THE RULES OF ROOKE MANOR.

It was finally the day of the event, and I was currently in my room getting ready.I wasn't planning on doing something extremely extravagant. I could do a simple makeup look and style my hair myself. There was no need for a stylist.I had settled for a simple bodycon dress that stopped a little above my knees.I curled my hair and left it down, then just used some light powder, mascara, and a little lipstick. I was set to go.After putting on my shoes, I stood in front of my full-length mirror and assessed my look.I still wasn't showing yet, although it seemed like a tiny bump was already forming.Maybe it was just me though. When I was satisfied, I grabbed my clutch and deemed myself good to go.I was walking down the stairs when Rose walked up to me."You look stunning, ma'am." Her usual smile was present."Thank you. I was even thinking it was a bit much.""No way. It's perfect."I smiled at her compliment."Will Mr. Rooke be accompanying you?"My smile almost fell, then I realiz

Beth and I finally concluded on matters pertaining to the fundraiser, which will be held tomorrow at the foundation. It wasn't an overly big event like society galas. We were more focused on actually doing something good for the children. People were piling in already to set up, and the children stared in awe at the different equipment being brought in."This is going to be so good. Who would have thought a year ago that we would be hosting our very own fundraiser?" Beth clapped her hands in excitement."Yeah, we really have come a long way." I smiled. "I'm happy we get to do this together.""Me too, E." She suddenly frowned. "Hey! I told you to hang that on the other side of the hall!"I shook my head as I watched her walk off to scold God knows who. I wasn't planning on getting involved since I trusted her and I knew everything would turn out beautifully."Hey, E." Noah walked up to me."Hi, Noah. What are you doing here?"I hugged him."Don't tell me that's Beth yelling at someone

I didn't wake up the next morning in a better mood. I couldn't shake the ominous feeling I had. I placed a hand on my stomach as it dawned on me that I had one more potential threat to my baby.I eventually got out of bed, ready to begin the new day.My morning sickness was gradually getting better as the days passed by, and I couldn't possibly be happier. If I threw up aggressively one more time, I was certain one or two organs would come out. This morning I felt like eating pancakes completely bathed in maple syrup, and I had already informed Rose.I guess my taste buds were gradually coming back. It was still a shame I couldn't drink coffee, though. My caffeine was what kept me going most mornings. When I had finished getting ready, I proceeded downstairs to the dining room to find Cassian already seated."Morning." I mumbled out as I took a seat."Good morning." He didn't look up from whatever he was looking at."Good morning, ma'am." Rose greeted me cheerfully, dropping a plate o

I quickly took a glass of water to calm my violent coughs. What was Melissa doing here?Rose ran up to me, her eyes filled with worry."Are you okay, ma'am?!"I nodded and eventually calmed down."Y..Yes, um...where is she exactly?""She's outside the manor gate. She hasn't been let in yet."What was Melissa doing here? There was no way she was up to any good."Should we let her in, ma'am?"I could pretend not to be home, right?I shook my head. No, that wouldn't work. Melissa acted out whenever she didn't get what she wanted, and I was in no mood to find out what she would do if I refused to see her."Ma'am?""Yes?" Her voice jolted me out of my thoughts."You haven't said anything yet.""Um...sure, let her in."Rose looked skeptical. "Are you sure, ma’am? You don't have to see her if you don't want to.""No, it's fine, let her in." I gave her a reassuring smile."Okay, ma'am." She nodded and walked away.Well, I couldn't finish my meal anymore; that was for certain.I stood up and m

"Hello, Miss Hart. How are we doing today?"The doctor greeted me as she took her seat."I feel fine. I mean, despite throwing up every other morning. I think I've got this whole pregnancy thing down."She laughed. "That's nice to hear. Apart from that, is there any other discomfort?""I did feel dizzy once, but other than a slight wave of dizziness, I was completely fine."She nodded. "It happens from time to time. Anything else?""No, not really. Oh yeah, I had to drink wine at an event. Will that do anything? It was just a simple sip.""No, it shouldn't, but do try to avoid it in the future." She paused and dropped her pen."I take it you haven't told your husband yet?"I shook my head. "I... I haven't had the chance.""Hmm. I would advise you to tell him as soon as possible. You will start showing soon, and you wouldn't be able to hide it any longer."I nodded. "I'll tell him.""Okay, so everything seems to be in order, which is wonderful news. You can continue as you were. Try to

What document? Why was this woman hellbent on ruining any kind of happiness I had?'What document?' I asked in response.'It's a confidential document containing information regarding a project called 'Helix'. I need to know how much Cassian knows about it.'Was I supposed to check every single document in his office with Helix written on it?What the hell?I furrowed my eyebrows in curiosity as I reread the text. It still wasn't clear to me."What's up?" Beth asked me when she saw the look on my face."Um...nothing. It's nothing."As I walked to my office, I was still lost in thought. A file? Where would I begin to search for that? And how much time would I have in his office before I got caught?I ended up not focusing for the rest of the day and ultimately decided to go home early. When I got home, Rose informed me that Cassian wasn't home yet. After I had finished washing up and changed, I decided to go to the garden to read.Hopefully, that would help determine what I should do.
