"Is that really all you're bringing?"

I don’t mean for it to sound so sharp, but the frayed satchel in her lap looks like it’s one thread away from disintegrating. She holds it like it contains her entire life... because it probably does.

Selene nods, cheeks pink. “I don’t own much.”

Of course she doesn’t. That house, that family... they bled her dry and left her with nothing but silence and scars.

“Get in,” I say, yanking open the passenger door.

She slips in, wordless, spine straight like she's bracing for a blow. The satchel lands in the trunk with a sound so hollow it makes my jaw clench.

As the car hums to life and we pull onto the winding road that’ll take us back to the capital, a strange quiet settles over us. Not awkward, exactly. Just dense. Heavy. Like breathing through wool.
