Chapter 3: A Price He Couldn’t Afford

Morning arrived with pale sunlight filtering through the curtains, yet the apartment felt colder than it had the night before. Elena woke before Adrian, though she had barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes, the words from the email resurfaced in her mind.

Contract Transfer Agreement.

She tried to convince herself she had misunderstood what she had seen. Businesses signed contracts every day. Knight Holdings was probably just another investor trying to rescue Adrian’s struggling company.

That had to be it.

She quietly slipped out of bed, careful not to wake him. The kitchen was silent except for the soft hiss of the coffee maker. As she prepared breakfast, she found herself glancing toward the hallway every few seconds, hoping Adrian would walk in wearing the easy smile she had fallen in love with years ago.

Instead, he appeared looking as though he had aged overnight.

Dark circles framed his eyes, and the stubble along his jaw suggested he had barely rested. He loosened the cuffs of his shirt as he entered the dining room, offering Elena a tired smile.

“You didn’t have to wake up this early.”

“I always do.”

She placed a cup of coffee in front of him before sitting across the table.

“I made your favorite omelet.”

Adrian looked down at the plate without reaching for his fork.

“You spoil me too much.”

Elena laughed softly.

“I’ve heard husbands complain about many things. I’ve never heard one complain because his wife cooks breakfast.”

His smile was faint, but genuine.

For a fleeting moment, everything felt normal again.

Then his phone vibrated.

The expression on his face changed instantly.

He stood before answering it.

“I have to go.”

“You haven’t even eaten.”

“I’ll grab something on the way.”

“Adrian.”

He paused.

She rarely called his name with that much hesitation.

“Is something wrong at the company?”

He lowered his eyes.

“Why would you ask that?”

Elena took a slow breath.

“I saw the debt recovery notice.”

Silence settled between them.

Not angry silence.

The kind that came when the truth had finally found its way into the room.

“I wasn’t trying to read your documents,” she said quickly. “It slipped out of your briefcase.”

Adrian rubbed a hand across his face before sinking back into the chair.

“The company expanded too quickly.”

“How bad is it?”

He gave a humorless laugh.

“Worse than you think.”

She reached across the table and gently covered his hand.

“We’ll figure it out.”

His eyes lifted to hers.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then help me understand.”

For several seconds, Adrian simply looked at her.

Elena could almost see the battle taking place behind his eyes.

Finally, he spoke.

“The bank won’t extend our loans. Investors are pulling out. If I can’t secure funding this week, everything I’ve built will collapse.”

The confession made her heart ache.

She thought about the jewelry box resting inside her wardrobe.

It wasn’t much, but perhaps it could buy him more time.

“I have Mother’s necklace,” she said softly. “And the earrings she left me. We can sell them.”

Adrian stared at her in disbelief.

“No.”

“They’re only things.”

“They’re all you have left of her.”

“But I still have you.”

For a heartbeat, neither of them spoke. Elena remembered the countless nights they had spent sitting on the floor of their first apartment, sharing instant noodles because they couldn’t afford anything better. Adrian had promised that when his business finally succeeded, he would give her a life where she would never have to worry about money again. She had never cared about the promise itself. Having him beside her had always felt like enough, anyway.

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Adrian looked away.

His jaw tightened as though the sentence had wounded him instead.

Before either of them could speak again, another call lit up his phone.

This time, he didn’t answer immediately.

The name flashing across the screen was unfamiliar.

Mr. Graves.

Adrian closed his eyes briefly before accepting the call.

“I’ll be there in thirty minutes.”

He ended the conversation and stood.

“I have to leave.”

Elena rose with him.

“Will you be home tonight?”

“I don’t know.”

He picked up his briefcase, hesitated, then unexpectedly stepped closer.

For the first time in weeks, he brushed a kiss against her forehead.

“I’m sorry.”

Before Elena could respond, he walked out the door.

She remained standing in the quiet apartment, touching the place where his lips had rested.

The gesture should have comforted her.

Instead, it felt like a goodbye.

That afternoon, Elena left work early and traveled to the address printed on the debt recovery notice. If the bank truly intended to seize Adrian’s company, perhaps there was someone willing to explain the situation.

The building towered above the surrounding streets, its glass exterior reflecting the afternoon sky.

Inside, men and women in tailored suits crossed the marble lobby with practiced confidence.

Elena approached the reception desk.

“Good afternoon. I’d like to speak with someone regarding Brooks Innovations.”

The receptionist typed something into her computer before looking up.

“I’m sorry, ma’am. Mr. Brooks isn’t meeting with the bank today.”

Elena frowned.

“He isn’t?”

“No.”

The receptionist hesitated.

“His meeting is across the street.”

Elena turned instinctively.

Through the towering glass windows, another building dominated the opposite side of the avenue.

Its sleek black exterior reflected the clouds overhead, and its name stretched across the entrance in polished silver letters.

KNIGHT HOLDINGS GROUP.

The same name she had seen in Adrian’s email.

A strange chill crept through her.

She watched Adrian’s familiar black sedan pull into the private entrance.

Moments later, he disappeared inside.

Elena didn’t know why he had lied.

She only knew one thing.

Whatever awaited Adrian inside Knight Holdings had nothing to do with an ordinary business meeting.

The gunshot shattered the silence. For one terrifying heartbeat, no one moved. Then Elena heard someone cry out.It wasn’t Victor. It wasn’t Adrian. It was Gabriel. He staggered backward, one hand pressed tightly against his shoulder as blood seeped rapidly through his shirt.“Gabriel!” Elena screamed.Adrian caught Gabriel before he hit the ground.“I’m fine,” Gabriel gritted out.“It missed anything important.”Victor laughed.“You’ve always been willing to bleed for your friends.”Gabriel forced a weak smile.“Better me than them.”The tunnel trembled again.Another section of concrete broke away from the ceiling, crashing into the rushing water below.Damien burst through a newly opened maintenance passage with two security officers behind him.His eyes immediately found Gabriel.“Status?”“Still breathing,” Gabriel answered through clenched teeth.Damien gave a single nod.“Good.”Then he turned his attention to Victor.“It’s over.”Victor smiled.“No.”He slowly removed the flas

Victor stepped farther into the underground chamber, his polished shoes echoing against the damp concrete floor. Behind him, armed men spread out in a semicircle, cutting off every route to the waiting speedboat. The engine continued to idle softly.Freedom was only a few steps away.Yet it had never felt farther.Victor smiled as his gaze settled on Adrian.“You’ve always had terrible timing.”Adrian instinctively moved in front of Elena.“If you’re here for me, let everyone else leave.”Victor laughed quietly.“You still believe you’re the one making bargains.”Gabriel tightened his grip on his weapon.“Take one more step, Victor.”“I wouldn’t.”Victor’s eyes never left Adrian.“I know exactly how many bullets are pointed at me.”The underground dock fell silent.Water lapped gently against the concrete edge while droplets fell steadily from the ceiling.Elena could hear nothing except her own breathing.Victor slowly reached into his coat.Gabriel immediately raised his gun.“Don’t

The first explosion shook the warehouse before anyone could react.A deafening blast erupted near the eastern wall, sending chunks of concrete and twisted metal crashing to the floor. Thick smoke swallowed the building, reducing visibility to only a few feet.Victor lowered his rifle.“What have you done?” he barked.Damien smiled for the first time that night.“I don’t lose twice.”Another explosion echoed through the warehouse. The overhead lights flickered wildly before half the building plunged into darkness.“Move!” Gabriel shouted. He grabbed Elena’s hand while Adrian, still weak from captivity, struggled to keep pace beside them. The guards fired blindly into the smoke.Bullets struck steel containers, throwing bright sparks into the air.Damien remained behind, returning fire with calm precision. He wasn’t trying to win.He was buying them time.“Go!” he yelled.“We’re not leaving you!” Adrian shouted back.“You don’t have a choice!”A steel beam crashed between them, cutting

The warehouse fell into a suffocating silence.Victor’s pistol remained aimed at Elena, unwavering in his steady hand. Around them, armed guards stood like statues, their fingers resting near their triggers as rain hammered relentlessly against the rusted roof.No one moved. No one dared to breathe.Adrian’s wrists strained against the ropes binding him to the chair.“Victor,” he said through clenched teeth, “this has never been about Elena.”Victor tilted his head slightly.“Hasn’t it?”“You know she has nothing to do with this.”“She does now.”His answer was calm, almost casual, but it sent a chill through the warehouse.Elena stood her ground. She could feel her heartbeat pounding in her ears, yet she refused to step back.“If you’re looking for someone to blame,” she said, “blame me.”Adrian’s head snapped toward her.“No!”Victor chuckled.“Interesting.”He lowered the pistol just enough to study them both.“Even now, you’re still trying to protect each other.”He sighed dramati
