Elena remained where she was after Adrian’s voice faded into silence. The mysterious messages, each word refusing to loosen its grip on her thoughts. She wanted to believe there had been some misunderstanding, that the unknown sender was nothing more than a business associate whose words had been taken out of context. Yet the uneasiness settling inside her chest refused to disappear.

When the study door finally opened, she quickly stepped away from the living room and returned to the dining table. She picked up the serving spoon and pretended to arrange the food, hoping Adrian wouldn’t notice the turmoil hidden behind her calm expression.

“I’m sorry,” Adrian said as he entered the dining room. “The investors overseas would not stop calling.”

Elena forced a smile. “It’s alright. Sit down before everything gets cold.”

For a few minutes, the only sounds between them were the soft clink of cutlery against porcelain and the rain tapping gently against the windows. Adrian barely touched his food. His attention drifted repeatedly toward the phone resting beside his plate, as though he expected it to ring again at any moment.

“Does it taste alright?” Elena asked.

He looked up, almost surprised by the question.

“It’s good.”

“You’ve only had two bites.”

“I had a late lunch.”

She nodded, though she knew he hadn’t. Adrian rarely remembered to eat when work became overwhelming.

Trying to lighten the mood, she reached for the gift box and slid it across the table.

“I almost forgot.”

His eyes settled on the neatly wrapped package.

“You didn’t have to buy me anything.”

“I wanted to.”

After a brief hesitation, he untied the ribbon and lifted the lid. The silver fountain pen rested neatly inside its velvet case, catching the candlelight.

A genuine smile appeared on his face.

“You remembered.”

“You said years ago that successful businessmen always carried fountain pens.”

“I can not believe you still remember something that insignificant.”

“It wasn’t insignificant to me.”

The smile lingered for only a moment before fading again. Adrian carefully closed the box and placed it beside his plate.

“Thank you.”

The words were sincere, but they carried a sadness Elena couldn’t understand.

She searched his face, hoping he would finally tell her what had been troubling him for months.

Instead, he lowered his eyes.

“I’ve been… difficult lately.”

The unexpected confession caught her off guard.

“You’ve been busy,” she corrected gently.

“No.” He shook his head. “I’ve been absent.”

Silence stretched between them.

Elena reached across the table and rested her hand lightly over his.

“We can fix that.”

For the first time in months, she thought she felt his fingers tighten around hers.

Then his phone rang again.

Adrian immediately withdrew his hand.

“I have to take this.”

The warmth disappeared as quickly as it had come.

Without waiting for a response, he stood and walked onto the balcony, closing the glass door behind him.

Elena watched him through the rain-speckled glass.

His shoulders were tense.

His free hand repeatedly ran through his hair as he spoke.

Whatever conversation he was having, it wasn’t an ordinary business call.

She looked down at the unopened bottle of wine between them.

Three years of marriage.

Three years of promises.

How had they become strangers sharing the same table?

Trying to distract herself, Elena began gathering the empty plates. As she carried them into the kitchen, Adrian’s briefcase caught her attention.

It had fallen slightly open when he rushed outside.

Several folders protruded from inside.

She had no intention of invading his privacy.

She bent only to close the case.

But before she could, a document slipped onto the floor.

Across the top, in bold black letters, were the words:

NOTICE OF FINAL DEBT RECOVERY

Her heart skipped.

She stared at the page, unable to look away.

Several figures were highlighted in red.

The total amount owed was so large that it barely seemed real.

How could Adrian’s company owe that much money?

Why hadn’t he told her?

Before she could read another line, the balcony door slid open.

She quickly placed the document back inside the briefcase and stepped away.

Adrian looked exhausted.

“Everything okay?” she asked carefully.

He gave a short nod.

“Just another problem at work.”

She wanted to tell him about the document.

She wanted to ask why he had hidden something so serious from her.

Instead, she simply said, “You don’t have to carry everything alone.”

For a moment, Adrian looked as though he might finally tell her the truth.

His lips parted.

Nothing came out.

“I’ll handle it,” he said at last.

Later that night, after Adrian had fallen asleep, Elena sat alone in the living room with a cup of tea growing cold between her hands.

Sleep refused to come.

Her thoughts kept returning to the debt notice.

No wonder he had been distant.

No wonder he barely smiled anymore.

Without thinking, she opened the small wooden jewelry box her mother had left her years before.

Inside lay a gold necklace, a pair of earrings, and a bracelet.

They weren’t priceless, but together they might be enough to help.

She closed the lid and smiled sadly.

If selling them could ease Adrian’s burden, then it was a sacrifice she was willing to make.

Just as she stood to return the box to its shelf, a notification echoed from the study.

Adrian had left his laptop open.

The screen illuminated the dark room.

One new email.

Its subject line was impossible to ignore.

Contract Transfer Agreement – Final Approval Required

Before Elena could stop herself, her eyes drifted to the sender’s name.

Knight Holdings Group.

She had never heard of the company before.

But something about the email sent an inexplicable chill through her.

She didn’t know it yet, but the name glowing on that screen was about to change her life forever.

Adrian’s fingers closed around the flash drive. For one second, relief crossed his face. Then Victor’s hand clamped around his wrist.“Give it to me.”Adrian pulled back.“Never.”The concrete beneath them cracked.Victor’s eyes widened. The section of dock they stood on suddenly collapsed. Both men dropped.“Adrian!” Elena screamed.Adrian grabbed the edge with one hand, the flash drive still trapped in his other.Victor fell farther, catching a broken metal beam. The rushing water roared beneath them.“Take my hand!” Elena cried.Adrian looked up.She was standing at the edge, reaching desperately toward him.He stretched his free hand.Their fingers touched. For one terrifying moment, she couldn’t hold him. Then Adrian gripped her wrist.“I’ve got you.”“No,” Elena cried. “I’ve got you.”She pulled with everything she had.Behind her, Damien and Gabriel rushed forward.“Together!” Damien shouted. All three grabbed Elena and pulled.Adrian’s body slowly rose above the edge.Victor w

The gunshot shattered the silence. For one terrifying heartbeat, no one moved. Then Elena heard someone cry out.It wasn’t Victor. It wasn’t Adrian. It was Gabriel. He staggered backward, one hand pressed tightly against his shoulder as blood seeped rapidly through his shirt.“Gabriel!” Elena screamed.Adrian caught Gabriel before he hit the ground.“I’m fine,” Gabriel gritted out.“It missed anything important.”Victor laughed.“You’ve always been willing to bleed for your friends.”Gabriel forced a weak smile.“Better me than them.”The tunnel trembled again.Another section of concrete broke away from the ceiling, crashing into the rushing water below.Damien burst through a newly opened maintenance passage with two security officers behind him.His eyes immediately found Gabriel.“Status?”“Still breathing,” Gabriel answered through clenched teeth.Damien gave a single nod.“Good.”Then he turned his attention to Victor.“It’s over.”Victor smiled.“No.”He slowly removed the flas

Victor stepped farther into the underground chamber, his polished shoes echoing against the damp concrete floor. Behind him, armed men spread out in a semicircle, cutting off every route to the waiting speedboat. The engine continued to idle softly.Freedom was only a few steps away.Yet it had never felt farther.Victor smiled as his gaze settled on Adrian.“You’ve always had terrible timing.”Adrian instinctively moved in front of Elena.“If you’re here for me, let everyone else leave.”Victor laughed quietly.“You still believe you’re the one making bargains.”Gabriel tightened his grip on his weapon.“Take one more step, Victor.”“I wouldn’t.”Victor’s eyes never left Adrian.“I know exactly how many bullets are pointed at me.”The underground dock fell silent.Water lapped gently against the concrete edge while droplets fell steadily from the ceiling.Elena could hear nothing except her own breathing.Victor slowly reached into his coat.Gabriel immediately raised his gun.“Don’t

The first explosion shook the warehouse before anyone could react.A deafening blast erupted near the eastern wall, sending chunks of concrete and twisted metal crashing to the floor. Thick smoke swallowed the building, reducing visibility to only a few feet.Victor lowered his rifle.“What have you done?” he barked.Damien smiled for the first time that night.“I don’t lose twice.”Another explosion echoed through the warehouse. The overhead lights flickered wildly before half the building plunged into darkness.“Move!” Gabriel shouted. He grabbed Elena’s hand while Adrian, still weak from captivity, struggled to keep pace beside them. The guards fired blindly into the smoke.Bullets struck steel containers, throwing bright sparks into the air.Damien remained behind, returning fire with calm precision. He wasn’t trying to win.He was buying them time.“Go!” he yelled.“We’re not leaving you!” Adrian shouted back.“You don’t have a choice!”A steel beam crashed between them, cutting

The warehouse fell into a suffocating silence.Victor’s pistol remained aimed at Elena, unwavering in his steady hand. Around them, armed guards stood like statues, their fingers resting near their triggers as rain hammered relentlessly against the rusted roof.No one moved. No one dared to breathe.Adrian’s wrists strained against the ropes binding him to the chair.“Victor,” he said through clenched teeth, “this has never been about Elena.”Victor tilted his head slightly.“Hasn’t it?”“You know she has nothing to do with this.”“She does now.”His answer was calm, almost casual, but it sent a chill through the warehouse.Elena stood her ground. She could feel her heartbeat pounding in her ears, yet she refused to step back.“If you’re looking for someone to blame,” she said, “blame me.”Adrian’s head snapped toward her.“No!”Victor chuckled.“Interesting.”He lowered the pistol just enough to study them both.“Even now, you’re still trying to protect each other.”He sighed dramati
