I woke up pleased with how the previous day went; it was a soothing balm to the ruined party. That day was more jumbled than I had planned it to be, I was glad Kael was there to save the day.

After changing into my outfit for the day, a messenger announced his presence. “Greetings my queen, his majesty the king requests your presence in his private study.” He bowed and left.

Donned in my black gown and red robe I stepped out, my eyes caught a gathering on my left. I turned around in curiosity

In the evening, the fire in the hearth crackled, throwing long, amber shadows across the tapestries of my private chambers. Outside, the wind howled through the ramparts of the fortress, a bitter reminder of the world beyond these stone walls. Maddie sat across from me, her fingers nimbly working a needle through a heavy woolen cloak. For a long time, the only sounds between us were the snapping of the logs and the rhythmic shhh-shhh of her thread."The fortress feels different lately, my lady," Maddie said softly, not breaking her stitch. "Since alpha Kael defeated the blackthorn leader, the air itself feels heavier. Safer, perhaps, but tightly wound, like a bow string pulled just a fraction too far.""A kingdom born from blood is rarely restful, Maddie. You should know that by now" I replied, resting my teacup on the small side table. I looked out the window facing the garden and bushes that covered the other minor clan. "Kael’s rule is absolute because it has to be, but absolute ru

Kael and I sat in my chambers quietly, I was reading while he watched Ash. The guard announced Bram’s presence, drawing my attention to the door. Beside me, Kael shifted, his posture snapping from relaxed to lethally alert in a fraction of a second. As Bram entered, he looked out of breath, his dark cloak damp with the evening mist, his eyes wide with a frantic sort of energy."He’s done it," Bram panted, not bothering with a formal greeting as he stepped fully into the room. "Dorian has crossed the line, he’s rallying the rogues. My scouts just confirmed he’s mapping out the weakness in our lower valley walls, he intends to wage war on the fortress."My heart thundered in my chest, I could not describe the emotions that flowed through me. For how long do we continue in this strife? With the execution of Vespera and Lara's banishment, I thought everything would be at ease for a while. I had come back from the cold mountains to make sure stability was reinstated in the fortress, not fo

  • Sold to My Ex-Husband's Alpha Father   Chapter Ninety Eight- The Hollow Oak (Dorian’s POV)

Every morning before first light, Tomas would leave a bundle at the hollow oak near the creek; a wrapped heel of bread, a handful of dried beans, sometimes a strip of salt pork stolen from his own plate. Every evening, the bundle was gone. In its place would be something else: three skinned rabbits, a pouch of wild onions that didn't make you sick, a carved wooden bird for Tomas. The plan was working but on the seventh day, the supply cart did not come. Dorian woke to Jonn tapping on his door, "Prince. The water barrel is almost empty. And we're out of grain."Outside, the sky was a flat, iron grey. The creek that had been ankle-deep last week was now just a dark stain of mud with a trickle in the middle.Brandon arrived at noon, but not at the oak. He came straight to the cabin, which he had never done in daylight, his face was tight with panic."My sister is sick," he said without greeting. "The little ones drank from the lower pool. Now they can't stop vomiting, the water is bad."

The cabin was not a cabin as I took proper view of it. It was a logging outpost, built for punishment detail. Four walls of damp pine, a roof that leaked, and six bunks for men who were not soldiers and not prisoners, but something in between but I was the only one there.I had been left there that morning with a sack of stale rye, but by midnight, I returned with a rogue. Brandon wouldn't come inside, "your workers will scream if they see me, they've been told we eat children.""Do you?" I turned to him."Only on feast days," Brandon said flatly, then saw the look on my face. "No, my prince, we do not.""Wait here then, behind the woodpile. If you hear me shout, run."I pushed the door open but stumbled backwards when I saw three men inside, playing dice by a weak fire. Old Robert, a guy with the missing ear, and younger guy who couldn't have been older than sixteen. I knew they were not royal guards because Robert was there, when they stood when they saw him. "Your Highness.""Stop

The rogue stayed bowed, his forehead nearly touching the dead leaves. Up close, he smelled worse than my wolf had reported; sweat, woodsmoke, wet earth, and years of living without a proper bathhouse."Get up," I snapped, brushing dirt off my tunic. "I hate being bowed to by people who just tackled me into the dirt like a wild boar."He rose quickly, awkwardly. He was younger than I'd thought at first glance. Not much older than me, maybe twenty-nine. But his face was gaunt, his hair matted, his cloak made from stitched pelts that didn't match. A decade of exile had aged him twice over."What's your name?" I asked, because if he was going to kill me and eat me, I should at least know his name for the afterlife."Brandon, of the Grey Hollow pack. Formerly of the Grey Hollow pack.""Formerly." I said with a sprinkle of disgust. He flinched at the word. "My father was a border scout, he was loyal for twenty years. He served under your grandfather first." Brandon's voice lost its tremblin

The guards acted swiftly, lady Vespera was held down at the dais before she got to Kael. He rose and looked at Vespera, his face was blank but I could tell he held the same disdain in the same measure he saw Lara. There should be an expression of disgust if he was that direct facially. Kael looked down at her, “you all keep doing the same thing over and over again, and even after the multiple failed attempts you still venture into more evil.” Last Vespera whimpered and turned to me swiftly, “please, queen Selene. Solicit on my behalf……” “I could swear that you almost choked when you called me queen.” I curved my lips in amusement. “I can't help you, lady Vespera. The deed has been done, every crime committed against the king and the throne have received repercussions and justice in return. It's your turn to face your karma,” I said quietly. “I'll do anything please, just don't send me to jail or make me end up like Lara.” Lady Vespera pleaded endlessly. “My verdict is this,” the
