Chapter 29

Alara scarcely felt her slippers touch stone as she hurried along the silent corridor, lantern light chasing the last stars from narrow windows. Ezra matched her pace but offered no words—he sensed the urgency of her heartbeat through their bond and let it guide them. She pushed through the infirmary doors and the breath she'd been holding caught in her throat.

Cassian sat upright against a bank of pillows, silver-streaked hair combed, new color warming cheeks that had been deathly pale the night before. He looked smaller without chains, yet stronger for the freedom. At the soft squeak of the door, his eyes lifted—amber mirrors of her own—and a fragile smile cracked the solemn line of his mouth.

“My spark,” he whispered, voice rough with disuse.

Tears blurred Alara’s vision. She crossed the room, skirts whispering like wings, and took both his hands. The old scars on his wrists had faded to white valleys in tanned skin, but new bruises bloomed where shadow-runes had once pulsed. She p

Eamon stepped in, parchment tucked under his arm, ink stains across his fingers. “Ah, the ladies of dawn and wise grand‑Alpha.” He bowed exaggeratedly, causing Elira to squeal. “The final line of prophecy is penned.”Alara raised a brow. “Final?”“I amended the ancient verse.” Eamon slipped the parchment onto the low table. “After shadow breaks, choice lights the path. But what follows? The original ended with merely ‘peace remains.’ Too hollow. So”—he cleared his throat dramatically—“I added: ‘And from that peace rise gardens of dawn where hearts may choose again.’”Cassian tapped the table, impressed. “Legacy sealed.”Alara smiled, tracing the fresh ink. “Gardens of dawn. Perfect.”Eamon eyed the baby. “She will learn to read it before long.”Alara snorted. “Perhaps let her master holding her head up first.” Elira responded by squealing and attempting to pull a strand of Alara’s hair. That evening the dining hall bustled with a small harvest celebration—winter greens, last of the ro

Ezra woke to birdsong softly threading the chilled dawn, each note echoing against stone no longer shuddering under siege. A pale ribbon of sunlight slid through the curtains and painted warm gold along the curve of Alara’s shoulder. She slept on her side, hand curled protectively over the gentle rise of her stomach. For a long moment Ezra simply watched her breathe. The hush enveloping the fortress felt delicate as spun glass; he feared one careless movement might shatter it.Alara’s lashes fluttered open. She met his gaze, smile blooming as morning in a garden newly replanted. “You’re staring,” she whispered.“Making sure the night didn’t steal you,” he replied, brushing a kiss across her forehead. She laid her palm against his cheek, thumb smoothing the faint scar near his temple. “Daylight will convince us both. Come—there’s a world to mend.”They rose slowly, deliberate in small gestures: Ezra pulling on a fresh linen shirt instead of battle‑scarred armor, Alara fastening her mot

Ezra guided her to the outer ward, where healers hurried between makeshift cots. Seren darted among them, braid coming loose, hands stained with salve. She knelt beside a limping soldier, binding his thigh, while her gaze kept flitting toward the gate.Damien emerged through the ruined archway, shirt torn, sling holding his broken arm. At sight of him, Seren dropped bandages and ran. He caught her one-armed, lifting her clean off the ground despite his grimace of pain.“You promised to stay under cover,” he murmured, forehead against hers.“And you promised not to make me wait,” she replied, voice cracking. She kissed him without the shyness of earlier days, the courtyard swelling with cheers at the sight. Lucas limped past, wiping soot from his brow.About time, he called, grin crooked as ever. He reached them and threw an arm around the pair. If you still insist on formalities I can officiate right here, though I am fond of ale at proper celebrations. Damien rolled his eyes, but gra

The fortress crouched beneath a pale indigo sky, its stones breathing chill pre-dawn silence while every heart inside beat too loud for comfort. Alara moved along the parapet beside Ezra, the swish of her cloak nearly the only sound. Below them soldiers tightened straps and whispered farewells into the wind, and cook fires smoldered, releasing thin fingers of smoke that carried the faint scent of thyme and ash. Alara forced steady breaths though a flutter pressed beneath her ribs, half nausea, half a tremor of new life she had felt for three nights running. She would keep that secret close a little longer.Ezra paused at each watchpost, laying a palm to cold stone, murmuring encouragement to sentries whose eyes shone amber in torchlight. Weariness shadowed the silver streaks in his hair, but purpose kept his shoulders square. When he found a loose cross-beam, he wedged it firm and nodded approval at the relieved guard.“You see everything,” Alara said quietly once they moved on.“It i

When he reached their chambers, Alara sat at a small table, contemplating a bowl of broth. A single candle haloed her hair in copper light. She looked up, relief easing into a smile. “I thought you might patrol until dawn.”“It’s tempting,” he admitted, shrugging off his cloak, “but I promised a certain Luna to eat.” He bent and kissed her hair. “Is your father resting?”“Seren coaxed him to sleep with valerian tea,” she replied. “He thanked me for saving him, Ezra. I never expected to hear that.” There was wonder in her voice.“You gave him back hope.” Ezra ladled himself soup and sat. “Eat. Strength for tomorrow.”She obeyed, sipping slowly. Halfway through, a wave of warmth washed her scalp to toes. The room tilted faintly; she set the spoon down. Ezra’s eyes narrowed. “You’re dizzy again.”“Just tired.” She forced a smile. “We’ve run on adrenaline for days.”He studied her, and she felt his concern skim their bond like a feather. She pushed gentle reassurance back. "I’m all right.
