Sophia POV

The entire ballroom went silent after the slap, and it wasn't a normal silence, it was the kind that made my chest tighten immediately because everybody suddenly looked terrified at the same time, so terrified that even the musicians stopped playing.

I stood there breathing hard while the wine glass slipped from my hand and shattered on the floor, and Matteo looked ready to pass out beside me, and honestly, the way everyone around us reacted was finally starting to make me realize I might have made a very stupid decision.

Luca De Luca turned his face back toward me slowly, and the red mark from the slap was still visible against his skin, but his expression never changed, and that somehow felt worse than shouting, worse than anger, because nobody moved and nobody spoke, and one of the politicians standing nearby quietly stepped backward like he wanted to leave before violence started.

I swallowed hard but forced myself not to look away from Luca, even though my heartbeat was becoming impossible to ignore.

Then Vincent stepped forward quickly. "Boss," he said calmly, almost like a warning. "People are watching."

So that was Vincent Moretti, and I recognized him immediately too, Luca De Luca's right hand man, the one the media called the ghost behind the De Luca empire because nobody ever knew what he was thinking, and he looked calmer than everyone else in the room, but his eyes moved carefully between Luca and me like he was already trying to control the situation before it got worse.

Luca kept staring at me for another few seconds before adjusting the sleeve of his suit slowly, like getting slapped in public happened every day, and that somehow annoyed me all over again.

"You ruined my dress first," I said, before Matteo grabbed my arm so hard I nearly lost my balance.

"Are you insane?" he whispered harshly under his breath. "Sophia, we need to leave right now."

Honestly, he was probably right, because the atmosphere inside the ballroom had turned dangerous almost instantly, phones were already coming out, people were whispering loudly now, some looked shocked and others looked entertained, but most of them looked scared, very scared, and all because I had slapped one man.

Matteo started dragging me toward the exit before I could embarrass us further, but somebody stepped in front of me and forced me to stop, an older man, tall, with sharp eyes and an expensive black suit, and the second his hand touched my arm to steady me, something about his expression changed immediately, and he froze, and his eyes stayed locked on my face for too long, especially on my eyes, long enough to make me uncomfortable instantly.

"I'm sorry," I said awkwardly while trying to move around him, but he kept staring, like he'd seen a ghost.

Then somebody behind us whispered, "That's Adrian Rossi's daughter," and the older man's expression darkened immediately, and my stomach tightened, because how did these people already know who I was?

The man finally let go of my arm slowly, looking toward Vincent without taking his eyes off me completely.

"Find out everything about her," he said quietly.

Vincent nodded once. "Of course, sir."

Something about the exchange made me uncomfortable immediately, and Matteo pulled me away before I could think too deeply about it.

"We're leaving," he muttered quickly, and nobody tried to stop us, which somehow felt worse.

As we walked through the ballroom I could feel people staring at me from every direction, whispers following us the whole way.

"That's her."

"She slapped him."

"Adrian Rossi's daughter?"

"She's dead."

That last one made my chest tighten badly.

Outside the Palazzo Bellucci Hotel, rain poured heavily across the streets while Matteo practically shoved me into the waiting taxi.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" he snapped the second the car pulled away. "Do you know who that was?"

"He spilled wine on me."

"That's your defense?"

"He acted like money could fix it."

Matteo stared at me like I had completely lost my mind. "Sophia, that wasn't some random rich businessman. That was Luca De Luca."

"I know who he is."

"No, I don't think you do."

I rolled my eyes even though anxiety was slowly creeping into my chest now that the adrenaline was fading. "You're overreacting."

"Am I?" Matteo laughed once, without humor. "You publicly humiliated the most feared man in Sicily and you think I'm overreacting?"

I looked out the window quietly after that, because deep down, part of me knew he was right, and the entire city had practically frozen after that slap, and that couldn't be normal.

When we finally reached Rosa's house almost forty minutes later, the first thing I noticed was the television already playing footage from the gala, and my stomach dropped instantly, because a blurry video of me slapping Luca was already replaying across the screen while reporters spoke rapidly in Italian underneath it, and the news had somehow spread that fast.

Rosa stood near the television looking completely horrified, and the second she saw me she rushed forward.

"What did you do?"

I blinked. "How do you already know?"

"The entire city knows!" she snapped. "People are already talking about it online."

Matteo pointed at me dramatically. "I told her not to do it."

"You absolutely did not."

Rosa grabbed my face suddenly, like she needed to make sure I was real. "Sophia, listen to me carefully. You need to leave Palermo tonight."

"Because of one slap?"

"You don't understand these people."

"There's that sentence again."

"This isn't funny!" Rosa shouted. "The De Lucas don't forgive humiliation, especially not publicly."

The fear in her voice finally made my stomach twist properly for the first time that night, and before I could answer her, bright headlights suddenly swept across the front windows of the house, and everybody froze at once.

Matteo moved slowly toward the curtain and looked outside, and his face lost all color instantly.

There were black cars parked outside the house, at least four of them, and Rosa covered her mouth with a shaking hand.

"Oh God," she whispered. "They found us."

Sophia POVThe drive to my uncle's house took a long time, longer than the journey from the church to the De Luca mansion, and nobody said a word, the silence in the car so heavy it felt like it might suffocate me.I stared out the window as Palermo disappeared behind us, my thoughts replaying Vincent's words over and over. Antonio Rossi is missing. Then Rosa had called minutes later. Found. Found dead.Another Rossi. Another funeral. Another body.I clenched my hands into fists. How much more? How many people with my family's name had to die before this nightmare ended? The car finally slowed outside my aunt's home, where the whole street was crowded with mourners dressed in black, women crying openly, elderly men standing in groups whispering prayers, and the moment the De Luca convoy entered the street, every conversation stopped, heads turning, eyes following the vehicles, the crowd's mood curdling instantly into anger.I opened the door before anyone could do it for me, and the s

Sophia POVThe words echoed inside my head for the rest of the journey. Antonio Rossi. Missing.Nobody spoke after Vincent's announcement, and the convoy continued through the rain-soaked streets of Palermo while my thoughts spiraled further with every passing minute, because Antonio wasn't just another Rossi, he was my uncle, the man who used to sneak me chocolate whenever my father wasn't looking, the man who carried Matteo on his shoulders during every family festival, the man who had promised me, years ago, that no matter what happened to our family, I would always have a home in Sicily. Now he was missing. Just gone.I stared out the window, barely noticing the city rushing past, because this couldn't be a coincidence anymore, not with the church attack first and Antonio disappearing only hours later, which meant someone was hunting my family.I lifted my eyes toward Luca, who was speaking quietly with Vincent, both of them discussing security like this was just another ordinary

Sophia POVThe silence after the gunshot felt heavier than the chaos that had come before it. The attacker lay on the church floor, not moving, blood spreading slowly beneath him, while guards rushed past us with their weapons up, checking every corner of the church, though I already knew they wouldn't find the person who did it, because the shooter was already gone.Luca stared at the broken stained-glass window for a second, and then he turned around."Close every exit."His voice wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. Within seconds every De Luca guard moved at once."No one leaves this church until we know every guest is safe.""Yes, boss."I looked at him, and for the first time since I'd met him, he didn't look like the quiet man who'd sat through a forced wedding without saying much. He looked like the man everyone in Sicily was afraid of.Vincent walked over. "The perimeter is already secure.""Good," Luca said. "If the shooter is still nearby, I want him found.""It'll be done."

Chapter 6Sophia POV"They're inside the church."These words hung in the air like a death sentence, and for one second nobody moved, and then everything happened at once.Another gunshot went off outside, and panic spread through the church fast, guests screaming as they ran from the pews, chairs crashing to the floor, someone knocking over a candle stand near the altar so melted wax splashed across the stone tiles, and the beautiful wedding ceremony that had started less than an hour ago had turned into complete chaos. My heart almost stopped, and before I could react, Luca grabbed my arm and pulled me down beside him so hard my shoulder hit the floor, and I glared at him."What are you doing?" I snapped."Trying to keep you alive," he said quickly.Another gunshot echoed through the church, and the stained-glass window behind us shattered, pieces of colored glass raining across the floor while several people screamed and a woman fainted near the front row, children crying while thei

Sophia POVI barely slept, because every time I closed my eyes I saw the guard collapsing onto the floor again, Gilbert calmly lowering the gun like taking a life meant absolutely nothing to him, and somehow those were now the people forcing me into marriage. The sound of footsteps outside my door kept me awake for most of the night, guards, always guards, even the windows locked from outside, and at some point around dawn I finally stopped trying to escape, because deep down I already understood there was nowhere to run from people like the De Lucas.A soft knock interrupted my thoughts before the bedroom door opened slowly, and Vincent walked in carrying a tray of breakfast, like this was some normal morning instead of the beginning of my nightmare."Good morning," he said calmly.I stared at him in disbelief. "Are you serious right now?"He placed the tray down carefully. "You should eat something.""I'd rather die.""That can probably be arranged," he replied smoothly, sitting dow

Sophia POVThe second I stepped out of Rosa's house, one of the men opened the back door of the black car waiting outside."Get in."His voice was calm, but the gun resting against his side made it clear that refusing wasn't really an option.Matteo stepped in front of me immediately. "She's not going anywhere with you people."Before things could escalate, Vincent walked forward calmly, and unlike the others he didn't look aggressive or impatient, he looked controlled, an expensive suit and a calm expression, the type of man who could probably convince someone to walk into danger willingly."Nobody is here to hurt your sister," he said smoothly.Matteo laughed angrily. "Right. Because showing up with armed men at midnight looks very friendly."Vincent ignored the comment completely and looked at me instead. "Mr. De Luca simply wants a conversation.""I don't," I replied immediately. For the first time since arriving, Luca finally spoke from beside the car. "That wasn't a request," an
