I stood outside the Alpha’s chamber with my palms sweating so hard I felt like I’d dipped them in oil. The guards didn’t hide the way their eyes dragged over me like I was dirt stuck under their boots. One of them bumped my shoulder when he opened the door.
“Don’t keep him waiting,” he muttered.
Then looked at me and actually realized I was a Luna who deserves respect and he continued,
“Please Luna.”
I stepped inside.
The Alpha was sitting, legs crossed, arms resting lazily on the chair’s sides. His eyes lifted to me the moment I entered, slow and steady, like he was trying to read my thoughts before I even opened my mouth.
“Areum,” he said.
My heart jumped. “Yes, Alpha.”
He didn’t blink. “Do you want to carry out the marital rites?”
I opened my mouth too fast, then stopped. My throat tightened. I hated how scared I sounded before I even spoke.
“…It depends on what you want, Alpha.”
A small smirk tugged at his mouth, like I’d said something amusing without meaning to.
“That’s not what I asked you,” he said.
My chest tightened. I looked down. “Then… if you want it, I won’t refuse.”
“So if I don’t want it…?” he asked.
“I won’t force anything,” I whispered.
He leaned forward slightly. “Are you scared of me?”
I wanted to lie, but the truth sat on my tongue like a heavy stone.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because everyone else is,” I muttered.
He let out a low hum, like he wasn’t expecting me to say that.
Then his eyes traveled over me slow, curious, it was not….not cruel. Somehow that made it worse. I felt exposed.
He tilted his head. “If you’re scared, why do you care so much about what I want?”
“I don’t want to anger you my lord.”
“So you care,” he said.
“I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t need to.”
My chest heated. This felt too much like teasing, flirting things I didn’t understand. Not when it came from him.
His eyes softened slightly. “Relax.”
I stiffened even more.
That made him chuckle. “You really don’t know how, do you?”
Before I could say anything stupid, he waved me away.
“Go,” he said. “I need to bathe.”
I bowed quickly and rushed out, my breath shaky.
The maids were gathered near a window, fake smiles on their faces. When they saw me, they didn’t even pretend to be polite.
One of them, the consort queen’s favorite maid, stepped in front of me and straightened my collar roughly.
“So fragile,” she said, pushing me harder than necessary. “Most people think you won’t last here, my lady.”
Another laughed. “Poor little Lunar. Thinks being pretty is enough.” I wasn't expecting any much respect but wasn't this a little too much.
I didn’t answer. Anything I said would make it worse.
They passed, shoulder-checking me like I was invisible furniture.
I exhaled slowly and headed to the bathing chamber on my side of the corridor. My body felt too hot, my skin prickling as if something was burning under it. Maybe nerves. Maybe humiliation. Maybe everything.
I needed water.
I slipped inside my section of the bath, undressed quickly, and sank into the warm pool with a quiet sigh. The heat eased some of the shaking in my fingers.
I didn’t know the Alpha’s bath was separated from mine by a single stone wall with vents near the top where steam escaped. I didn’t know voices could slip through.
So, like a fool, I talked to myself.
Actually, whispered to myself, because I wasn’t used to speaking freely.
“Why is he like that…” I muttered, rubbing my neck. “He looks too good to be real. That’s the problem. That stupid face. And those eyes. And the way he talks like he knows everything….”
A low smirk cut through the air.
I froze.
“Continue,” a voice said. Amused. Very amused. “Don’t stop because of me.”
My blood turned to ice.
“…Alpha?”
“Yes,” he answered, tone far too entertained. “I’ve been hearing you.”
Mortification hit so hard I wanted to sink under the water and stay there permanently.
“I…I didn’t know….I'm so sorry ”
“Yes, I can tell.”
I groaned quietly and covered my face with both hands.
Then I heard water shift on the other side. I peeked up and saw a head appear over the divider.
I screamed.
The Alpha blinked. “Calm down. I’m not going to jump over the wall.”
I scrambled back, nearly slipping, grabbing the edge of the pool like someone was chasing me.
He frowned slightly. “Why are you so scared?”
Because I was hiding the truth.
Because one wrong angle, one wrong move, and he’d see I wasn’t what I claimed to be.
A girl wouldn’t need to hide her chest. A girl wouldn’t panic this hard.
I forced myself to breathe. “I wasn’t expecting you.”
He tilted his head. Water dripped down his hair, down his neck. He looked… relaxed. Too relaxed for a man who terrified the world.
“You look… different today,” he said, eyes scanning my shoulders. “More… masculine, for a princess.”
My heart nearly stopped.
“…I was trained hard,” I said quickly. “Physical drills. It was required.”
His brows lifted. “Impressive.”
I tried to hide deeper into the water.
He let out another low chuckle. “Areum.”
“Yes?”
“Do you want to practice archery tomorrow?”
That surprised me. “You want me to join you?”
“Do you not want to?” he asked.
“No…I mean yes…I mean I don’t mind.”
H
e laughed again. “Then tomorrow.”
He disappeared from sight, water splashing as he moved back into his side.
My heart didn’t calm down for a long time.

Rowan I burst through the main gates with Areum limp in my arms, his head lolling against my shoulder like dead weight, skin clammy and way too pale, every shallow breath he took hitting me like a punch because fuck, he looked half-gone already, that void-pain thing eating him from the inside even while he was out cold. The compound was buzzing, pack members clustered everywhere some on the steps, some spilling out from the mess hall, all staring, whispers flying fast and ugly the second they saw us. "Rowan actually did it, raided the bastards?" "Heard the Luna took the curse hit, idiot hero move." "Who's the girl? And that smug fucker trailing her like he owns the place?" I didn't stop, just barked over my shoulder at the nearest betas, "Clear the infirmary room now! Get the doc here, he's crashing hard!" One of them jumped, scrambling, "On it, alpha!" but the murmurs kept coming, louder, angrier, "We lost three good ones out there for what? A fake Luna and her babysitter?" "Yeah,
~Rowan~We sat there in that stuffy room for what felt like forever after he dropped his bomb about using Elara as a stand-in, me, Jace, Niki, and him hashing out the details like we were planning a heist instead of trying to save our asses from a pack meltdown, and yeah, it was tense, everyone throwing ideas back and forth, Jace cracking stupid jokes to lighten the mood but nobody really laughing because this was serious shit, life-or-death serious, and I kept glancing at Areum, his face all determined but eyes showing that flicker of hurt like he hated the idea of hiding but knew it was the only play."Alright, so Elara it is," Jace said finally, rubbing his hands together like he was excited, "but how do we get her without starting a full-blown war with her dad's pack? Because that's exactly what we don't want, right, more enemies?" I nodded, leaning back, arms crossed, "Yeah, but think about it, a mini war with them is better than civil war here, at least it's external, we can con
AreumI sat on the edge of the bed with my hands locked together so tight my fingers hurt, staring at absolutely nothing, thinking about everything at the same time, which was my least favorite mental activity because it always ended with either a headache or me saying something unhinged out loud and Rowan giving me that look like he loved me but was also preparing for chaos.Rowan kept pacing. He paced like a man whose world was one bad sentence away from exploding, boots hitting the floor too hard, turning too sharp, muttering under his breath like the walls personally offended him.“Stop pacing,” I said.“I can’t,” he snapped.“You’re going to wear a hole in the floor.”“I’ll replace the floor.”“That’s not the point.”He stopped suddenly and looked at me, eyes sharp, jaw tight, and for a second the room felt too small for the amount of tension sitting between us.“They know,” he said.“There won’t be an issue if the Elder does not open his mouth.”I exhaled through my nose, lean
Areum's POVI was curled up in the corner of the hall, knees to my chest, because being me meant that every five minutes the universe decided it was hilarious to put me in a position where I could either scream or pass out, and honestly, both sounded equally appealing right now. My chest was tight, my breaths coming too fast and too short, and I could feel Rowan right there beside me, his presence like a damn steel wall I wanted to cling to but also punch because panic doesn’t care about logic. The guard, yes, that idiot, the one who had eyes like a squirrel on meth and clearly no concept of personal boundaries was back, and I swear I could feel his smug grin all the way from here. He looked like he had just realized he might have actually screwed up, and I was supposed to find sympathy for him? Nope. Not today. Not ever.“Areum,” Rowan’s voice cut through the chaos, low and rough and terrifyingly calm, and I swear I almost lunged at him like a lifeline. “Look at me.”I tried. I real
~Areum~“Good.”“You sure?”I twisted my head, glared at him over my shoulder even though tears were running down my face now not sad tears, just overload. “If you stop I will literally murder you. Keep going.”He stared at me another second really looked. Then something shifted in his expression. Not softer. Hungrier. Like he finally understood.“Okay,” he said quietly. “Okay.”The next hit wasn’t with his hand.He doubled the belt over in his fist, snapped it once against his own palm like he was testing. The crack made me flinch. Then he brought it down across my ass.I screamed full-throated, broken. Fire streaked across skin. My whole body locked up, then shuddered hard.“Again,” I choked out.He did. Twice more. Each one landing exactly where the last one had so the pain stacked. I was shaking now, ass on fire, wrists throbbing, cock so hard it hurt worse than the belt.Rowan dropped to his knees behind me suddenly, mouth on the welts hot, wet, soothing. Licking over the marks
~Areum~The knot finally went down enough that I could peel myself off Rowan without feeling like my guts were being yanked out backward, but the second I tried to roll away, another cramp hit like someone kicked me square in the lower belly. Not the slow build this time straight-up vicious, made my vision tunnel and my thighs clamp together so hard I nearly crushed his dick still half-inside me.“Fuck fuck fuck,” I hissed through my teeth, curling forward until my forehead smacked his collarbone. “Not done. Not even close. Why is this heat trying to murder me today?”Rowan’s arms came around me instantly, big hands sliding up my back like he could hold the cramps in place with sheer willpower. “Breathe, Luna. I got you.” His voice was wrecked, hoarse from all the begging and groaning, but still stupidly gentle. It pissed me off how much I liked it.“Don’t ‘Luna’ me right now,” I snapped, shoving at his chest even though I didn’t actually want him to let go. “I’m not in the mood for
