Mag-log inFor the first time since marrying Alessandro, she wanted to go shopping without Maria or the guards following her everywhere.
It wasn't that she disliked their company. She simply wanted to do something ordinary by herself.
Alessandro had left early that morning for an important business meeting, and she had decided to use the opportunity.
She picked a simple floral dress, tied her hair into a ponytail and took the black card Alessandro had given her.
Before leaving, she sent him a message.
I'm going shopping. I'll be back before dinner.
His reply came a few minutes later.
Take the guards.
She smiled.
I will.
The shopping mall was one of the most expensive in Milan.
Isabella had visited it once with Alessandro, but that day she had barely paid attention to the shops. She had been too busy trying to keep up with him.
Today, she wanted to take her time.
She entered a designer boutique and approached a saleswoman standing behind the counter.
"Good afternoon. I'd like to look at some dresses, please."
The woman glanced at her from head to toe.
"Do you have an appointment?"
Isabella blinked.
"An appointment? No. I just wanted to shop."
The saleswoman exchanged a look with her colleague.
"Perhaps you should try another store."
Isabella frowned slightly.
"Is there a problem?"
The woman gave a forced smile.
"This is an exclusive boutique. Our collections are quite expensive."
"I understand. I'd still like to have a look."
The saleswoman sighed.
"Madam, I don't think you understand. These aren't ordinary clothes. Perhaps there's a more affordable shop downstairs that would suit you."
Her colleague chuckled.
Isabella felt her cheeks grow warm.
"I didn't ask how much the clothes cost. I only asked to see them."
The saleswoman folded her arms.
"And I'm politely suggesting that you shop somewhere else."
Isabella looked around the beautiful boutique.
Other customers had begun watching them.
She wished she had never entered.
Still, she refused to leave without at least trying to explain herself.
"Could I speak with your manager?"
The woman's expression changed.
"Why? Are you planning to complain because we won't give you free clothes?"
Her colleague laughed louder.
Isabella's eyes stung.
"I never said anything about free clothes."
"Then perhaps you should show us that you can afford what you're asking for."
Isabella took out Alessandro's black card.
The saleswoman snatched it from her hand.
She examined it briefly before handing it to the cashier.
"Let's see."
The cashier inserted the card.
A few seconds later, the machine beeped.
TRANSACTION DECLINED.
The saleswoman burst into laughter.
"Oh, dear."
Isabella stared at the machine.
"That's strange. It should work."
"Of course it should. If it were real."
Her colleague leaned against the counter.
"Did you steal it?"
Isabella's head snapped up.
"No!"
"Then where did you get it?"
"My husband gave it to me."
The saleswoman laughed.
"Your husband?"
"Yes."
"Well, tell your husband to buy you a proper card before you come here pretending to be wealthy."
Isabella reached for it, but the woman pulled it away.
"Give it back, please."
"Not until we verify this thing. We could call the police. Possessing a fake bank card and attempting to use it is fraud."
"Please, listen to me. It's not fake."
"Then explain why it was declined."
Isabella felt tears gathering in her eyes.
She tried calling Alessandro, but the saleswoman interrupted her.
"You have no business making calls here. Leave before we have you arrested."
"Please, just let me speak—"
"Security!"
Two security officers approached.
The saleswoman threw the card onto the counter.
"Take her out. She's disturbing our customers."
Isabella picked up the card with trembling fingers.
She had never felt so humiliated.
Without another word, she walked out.
Behind her, the women were still laughing.
Outside the mall, Isabella found a quiet bench near the entrance.
She sat down and stared at the black card in her hand.
Alessandro had given it to her so she wouldn't have to worry about money. Yet the first time she tried using it, she had been accused of being a fraud.
She wiped her cheeks.
Perhaps the card had been blocked for security reasons. Perhaps she should have called Alessandro.
But she couldn't bring herself to go back inside.
She was still trying to control her breathing when a familiar voice interrupted her thoughts.
"Isabella Rossi?"
She looked up.
A man stood a few feet away, staring at her with surprise.
She recognized him immediately.
"Daniel?"
His face broke into a smile.
"I can't believe it! Is that really you?"
Isabella stood.
"Oh my goodness!"
Daniel laughed.
"It's been years!"
They hugged briefly, both laughing at the unexpected reunion.
Daniel had been one of her closest friends in high school. They had lost contact after graduation, and she had never expected to see him again.
"How have you been?" he asked.
"I'm doing well. What about you?"
"Busy with work. I actually moved back to Milan recently."
They began catching up, talking about old classmates, their teachers and the ridiculous things they had done as teenagers.
For the first time that afternoon, Isabella forgot about the boutique.
She laughed when Daniel reminded her of how she once fell asleep during an examination.
"I did not!"
"You absolutely did. I had to wake you up!"
Isabella covered her mouth, laughing.
"You promised never to tell anyone that!"
Daniel grinned.
"Some secrets deserve to survive, but that one doesn't."
Neither noticed the black car pulling into the parking area.
Inside it, Alessandro had just finished his meeting.
He glanced towards the mall entrance, expecting to find his wife.
Instead, he saw her sitting on a bench, laughing with a man he had never seen before.
His expression changed.
"Marco."
"Yes, sir?"
"Who is that man with my wife?"
Marco followed his gaze.
"I don't know, sir."
Alessandro watched as the stranger said something that made Isabella laugh again.
His jaw tightened.
"Find out."
Then he opened the car door.
Isabella stood in front of the bedroom mirror, adjusting the sleeves of her cream-coloured dress. She had changed outfits three times. It wasn't because she wanted to impress anyone. She simply didn't know how to dress for a meeting with a father who had once handed her over like an unwanted possession.A soft knock came from the door.“Are you ready?” Alessandro asked. She turned. He was wearing a dark suit, his expression as unreadable as ever. But when his eyes settled on her face, his features softened.“I'm nervous,” she admitted.“Then we can cancel.”She shook her head. “No. I think I need to hear what he has to say.”Alessandro approached her and gently straightened the necklace around her neck.“Remember, you don't owe him forgiveness just because he asks for it.”“I know.”“And if you want to leave at any point, we leave.”She managed a small smile. “You make everything sound so simple.”“Some things should be.”He offered his hand, and she took it.Roberto was already waiti
Bianca paced across her bedroom, her phone pressed tightly against her ear.“Did you see what they posted?” she demanded. “They made Isabella look like some innocent victim, and now everyone is praising her.”Roberto sighed on the other end. “What exactly did you expect?”“I expected them to be embarrassed by her! Instead, Alessandro's mother stood beside her, his father defended her, and the whole family acted as though she had done nothing wrong.”“Then perhaps you should have thought before posting those pictures.”Bianca stopped pacing.“Are you blaming me?”“I'm telling you that you have made enough noise. The Morettis are not the kind of family you can provoke without consequences.”Bianca scoffed. “You sound frightened of them.”“I have reasons to be.”For a moment, neither spoke.Roberto sat behind his desk, staring at the documents scattered before him. His financial problems had not disappeared simply because Isabella had married a wealthy man. If anything, they had become w
Isabella had never imagined that a simple charity visit could turn into such a disaster. She stood in the children's home's small activity hall, holding a clipboard while Elena spoke with the director. The children had gathered around a table, excited about the new educational supplies the foundation had promised to provide.Everything had been going well.Until Bianca arrived.Isabella noticed her near the entrance and immediately stiffened.“What is she doing here?” she whispered.Elena followed her gaze.“Do you know her?”“She's my stepsister.”Elena's expression changed slightly. Before she could say anything, Bianca approached them with a bright smile that didn't reach her eyes.“Isabella! What a surprise.”Isabella forced a polite smile.“Bianca.”“I heard you were doing charity work now. How wonderful.”Her eyes travelled over Isabella's clothes before returning to her face.“I must say, you've adjusted to your new life very quickly.”Elena stepped forward.“Good afternoon. An
Isabella stared at the invitation on her dressing table. It was an elegant cream-coloured envelope bearing the Moretti family crest. Inside was the schedule for the foundation's first planning meeting, along with a list of projects Elena wanted her to review. She had read everything twice, yet she still wasn't sure where to begin.A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.“Come in.”Alessandro entered, already dressed for work.“Still studying?”She held up the papers.“Your mother sent me all these documents. I think she expects me to understand everything by Wednesday.”He collected the papers and glanced through them.“She isn't expecting you to become an expert overnight.”“Some of these programmes have been running for years. I don't even know how they are funded.”“Then ask. That's how people learn.”Isabella sighed.“What if I make a mistake?”He placed the documents on the dressing table.“Then you correct it.”She looked at him.“You make it sound so easy.”“Because it is. You'r
Saturday morning arrived with an unexpected phone call.Isabella was in front of the mirror, trying to decide which earrings to wear, when Alessandro's voice came from behind her.“Mother says we should arrive before noon.”She glanced at him through the mirror.“Does your father know we're coming?”“He was the one who invited us.”“Then why does your mother sound more excited than he does?”Alessandro chuckled as he adjusted his cufflinks.“Because my mother enjoys having people around. My father enjoys giving orders.”Isabella smiled. She had spent the past few days thinking about her last conversation with Vittorio. Although he hadn't been openly unkind, she couldn't forget the way he had questioned her place in the family. She turned towards Alessandro.“Do you think he likes me?”Alessandro looked at her for a moment.“Why is that so important to you?”“Because he's your father. I don't want there to be problems between you because of me.”He walked closer and placed his hands on
Alessandro left the bedroom early the following morning.Isabella was still asleep when he dressed, adjusted his watch and picked up his phone. He paused beside the bed, looking at her peaceful face.He had promised her that he would be honest, but he wasn't entirely sure what his father wanted to discuss. Whatever it was, he didn't want it disturbing her morning. He bent down and kissed her forehead before leaving.Don Vittorio was already seated behind his large mahogany desk when Alessandro entered the family estate.“You're late.”Alessandro glanced at his watch.“I'm three minutes early.”“Then perhaps I've become impatient in my old age.”Alessandro pulled out a chair and sat down.“What is this about?”His father pushed a folder across the desk.“Your wife.”Alessandro's expression hardened slightly.“What about her?”Vittorio opened the folder.“I've been receiving questions about her.”“From whom?”“Some of our business associates. They want to know why you have suddenly beco
