LOGINHis eyes moved from Roberto to Claudia, then finally to Bianca.
He was furious.
Not because they had lied to him. Not even because they had dared to insult his wife.
It was because they had locked her in a room like a prisoner and left her there.
"Do you have any idea what you have done?" he asked quietly.
Roberto swallowed.
"Mr. Moretti, please. This is a family misunderstanding."
Alessandro let out a humourless laugh.
"Misunderstanding?"
He pointed towards Isabella.
"You locked my wife in a room, frightened her and left her crying. And you have the audacity to call it a misunderstanding?"
Claudia stepped forward.
"We didn't mean to hurt her. She was being disrespectful, and we only wanted to teach her—"
"Shut up!"
His voice thundered through the room.
Claudia immediately stepped back.
Alessandro took a slow breath, struggling to contain the anger building inside him.
"I should have made you disappear from the surface of the earth for what you have done."
Roberto's knees nearly gave way.
"But since you are my wife's family, and therefore mine by marriage, I will allow my wife to determine your punishment."
He turned towards Isabella.
"Tell me, sweetheart. What do you want me to do with them?"
Isabella looked at him, then at the three people standing before her.
Her father.
Her stepmother.
Her stepsister.
These were the people she had once desperately wanted to love her. The people whose approval she had spent years trying to earn.
Now they were kneeling before her husband because they feared what he could do.
"Please, Isabella!" Roberto cried.
He dropped to his knees.
"I'm your father. Whatever happened, you must remember that!"
Claudia followed, her expensive dress spreading across the floor.
"Please forgive us. We didn't know you would bring your husband here."
Bianca was the last to kneel.
"Isabella, please. We're sisters. You can't let him destroy us."
Isabella stared at them.
A few hours earlier, she had come to this house hoping for answers. She had wanted her father to explain himself. Perhaps she had even hoped he would show some remorse.
Instead, they had locked her away.
She opened her mouth.
"I..."
Her voice came out weak.
Alessandro turned towards her.
"Take your time, amore. Whatever you decide, I will listen."
Isabella tried to speak again, but the room began spinning.
She had barely eaten breakfast. She had spent hours crying, struggling and pleading behind a locked door.
Her knees weakened.
"Alessandro..."
He caught her just as her eyes closed.
"Isabella!"
His arms tightened around her.
"Sweetheart? Open your eyes."
There was no response.
He looked at Marco.
"Get the car. Now!"
Marco immediately hurried outside.
Alessandro lifted Isabella into his arms, holding her fragile body against his chest.
Her head rested against his shoulder, and her fingers hung loosely beside her.
His fury was replaced by fear.
"Get the doctor to the mansion," he ordered.
Then he turned towards the family.
"Look at what you've done."
Nobody dared to speak.
Alessandro carried Isabella towards the entrance.
Just before stepping outside, he stopped.
Without turning fully around, he spoke to Marco's men.
"That settles it."
The guards straightened.
"Flog them until they faint from exhaustion. Every one of them."
Roberto's eyes widened.
"Please, Mr. Moretti!"
Alessandro looked over his shoulder.
"You had the opportunity to show my wife mercy. You chose cruelty instead."
He glanced down at Isabella.
"Now you will understand what it feels like to suffer the consequences of your actions."
He walked out.
The guards moved towards the three terrified members of the Rossi family.
Bianca began screaming.
"Isabella! Tell him to stop!"
But Isabella was already unconscious in her husband's arms.
Inside the car, Alessandro settled her carefully across the back seat.
He brushed the hair away from her forehead.
"Open your eyes, little one."
Nothing.
He pressed his lips together.
"Drive!"
The car sped towards the mansion.
He held Isabella's hand throughout the journey, occasionally checking her breathing.
He had faced armed enemies without blinking. He had watched men beg for their lives and felt nothing.
But seeing his wife unconscious in his arms frightened him in a way he couldn't explain.
"You're going to be fine," he whispered.
"Do you hear me? You're coming back to me."
The doctor was waiting when they arrived.
Alessandro carried Isabella straight to their bedroom and carefully placed her on the bed.
"What happened?" the doctor asked.
"She fainted. She was exhausted and had been under considerable stress."
The doctor examined her while Alessandro stood beside the bed, his hands clenched.
After several minutes, the doctor finally turned towards him.
"She's stable. Her blood pressure is low, and she appears dehydrated and physically exhausted. She needs fluids, food and proper rest. I'll continue monitoring her."
Alessandro nodded.
"Whatever she needs, provide it."
When the doctor left, Alessandro sat beside her.
He gently took her hand.
"You went there looking for answers," he murmured. "And they made you suffer instead."
He bent and kissed her forehead.
"I should have gone with you."
For the first time in a long while, the ruthless mafia king felt completely helpless.
His wife was lying unconscious in their bed, and all he wanted was to hear her voice again.
Then her fingers moved slightly against his palm.
Alessandro immediately leaned closer.
"Isabella?"
Her eyelids fluttered.
And slowly, she opened her eyes.
Isabella stood in front of the bedroom mirror, adjusting the sleeves of her cream-coloured dress. She had changed outfits three times. It wasn't because she wanted to impress anyone. She simply didn't know how to dress for a meeting with a father who had once handed her over like an unwanted possession.A soft knock came from the door.“Are you ready?” Alessandro asked. She turned. He was wearing a dark suit, his expression as unreadable as ever. But when his eyes settled on her face, his features softened.“I'm nervous,” she admitted.“Then we can cancel.”She shook her head. “No. I think I need to hear what he has to say.”Alessandro approached her and gently straightened the necklace around her neck.“Remember, you don't owe him forgiveness just because he asks for it.”“I know.”“And if you want to leave at any point, we leave.”She managed a small smile. “You make everything sound so simple.”“Some things should be.”He offered his hand, and she took it.Roberto was already waiti
Bianca paced across her bedroom, her phone pressed tightly against her ear.“Did you see what they posted?” she demanded. “They made Isabella look like some innocent victim, and now everyone is praising her.”Roberto sighed on the other end. “What exactly did you expect?”“I expected them to be embarrassed by her! Instead, Alessandro's mother stood beside her, his father defended her, and the whole family acted as though she had done nothing wrong.”“Then perhaps you should have thought before posting those pictures.”Bianca stopped pacing.“Are you blaming me?”“I'm telling you that you have made enough noise. The Morettis are not the kind of family you can provoke without consequences.”Bianca scoffed. “You sound frightened of them.”“I have reasons to be.”For a moment, neither spoke.Roberto sat behind his desk, staring at the documents scattered before him. His financial problems had not disappeared simply because Isabella had married a wealthy man. If anything, they had become w
Isabella had never imagined that a simple charity visit could turn into such a disaster. She stood in the children's home's small activity hall, holding a clipboard while Elena spoke with the director. The children had gathered around a table, excited about the new educational supplies the foundation had promised to provide.Everything had been going well.Until Bianca arrived.Isabella noticed her near the entrance and immediately stiffened.“What is she doing here?” she whispered.Elena followed her gaze.“Do you know her?”“She's my stepsister.”Elena's expression changed slightly. Before she could say anything, Bianca approached them with a bright smile that didn't reach her eyes.“Isabella! What a surprise.”Isabella forced a polite smile.“Bianca.”“I heard you were doing charity work now. How wonderful.”Her eyes travelled over Isabella's clothes before returning to her face.“I must say, you've adjusted to your new life very quickly.”Elena stepped forward.“Good afternoon. An
Isabella stared at the invitation on her dressing table. It was an elegant cream-coloured envelope bearing the Moretti family crest. Inside was the schedule for the foundation's first planning meeting, along with a list of projects Elena wanted her to review. She had read everything twice, yet she still wasn't sure where to begin.A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.“Come in.”Alessandro entered, already dressed for work.“Still studying?”She held up the papers.“Your mother sent me all these documents. I think she expects me to understand everything by Wednesday.”He collected the papers and glanced through them.“She isn't expecting you to become an expert overnight.”“Some of these programmes have been running for years. I don't even know how they are funded.”“Then ask. That's how people learn.”Isabella sighed.“What if I make a mistake?”He placed the documents on the dressing table.“Then you correct it.”She looked at him.“You make it sound so easy.”“Because it is. You'r
Saturday morning arrived with an unexpected phone call.Isabella was in front of the mirror, trying to decide which earrings to wear, when Alessandro's voice came from behind her.“Mother says we should arrive before noon.”She glanced at him through the mirror.“Does your father know we're coming?”“He was the one who invited us.”“Then why does your mother sound more excited than he does?”Alessandro chuckled as he adjusted his cufflinks.“Because my mother enjoys having people around. My father enjoys giving orders.”Isabella smiled. She had spent the past few days thinking about her last conversation with Vittorio. Although he hadn't been openly unkind, she couldn't forget the way he had questioned her place in the family. She turned towards Alessandro.“Do you think he likes me?”Alessandro looked at her for a moment.“Why is that so important to you?”“Because he's your father. I don't want there to be problems between you because of me.”He walked closer and placed his hands on
Alessandro left the bedroom early the following morning.Isabella was still asleep when he dressed, adjusted his watch and picked up his phone. He paused beside the bed, looking at her peaceful face.He had promised her that he would be honest, but he wasn't entirely sure what his father wanted to discuss. Whatever it was, he didn't want it disturbing her morning. He bent down and kissed her forehead before leaving.Don Vittorio was already seated behind his large mahogany desk when Alessandro entered the family estate.“You're late.”Alessandro glanced at his watch.“I'm three minutes early.”“Then perhaps I've become impatient in my old age.”Alessandro pulled out a chair and sat down.“What is this about?”His father pushed a folder across the desk.“Your wife.”Alessandro's expression hardened slightly.“What about her?”Vittorio opened the folder.“I've been receiving questions about her.”“From whom?”“Some of our business associates. They want to know why you have suddenly beco
