Chapter 1

After I texted that reply, the wedding planning group chat was silent for half a minute.

The one who broke the silence first was Celine Jodie's brother, Jordan Jodie.

He sent a voice message, speaking as if he were lecturing an immature junior, "Gabriel Young, a wedding is not a joke. The hotel, guests, and parents have been informed. Don't make such irresponsible remarks even if you are angry."

Celine's best friend, Hailey Krate, stepped in to smooth things over.

Hailey: [Gabriel, it's not as serious as you think. Dylan recently lost his job and is in a bad state. We're just helping him overcome a past regret. We all know that you're Celine's only groom!]

She even sent a praying-hands emoji, as if this betrayal were nothing more than a joke taken too far.

My phone rang a second later. It was my best friend, Isaac Tatum, who called. When I answered, his tone was panicked. "Gabriel, I thought this wasn't appropriate from the beginning, but—"

I interrupted him, "Who took Celine's dress and the wedding ring on her finger?"

There was silence on the other end of the line.

I went into the walk-in closet. Only an empty hanger remained where the white dress had hung. The ring box on the vanity was still there, but her ring was missing.

Isaac finally said, "I took them. They said they wanted those things to take commemorative footage, then I was afraid you'd be angry, so I didn't dare tell the truth."

I gripped my phone. "So you used the passcode I gave you to get into my marital home and took the clothes and wedding ring I prepared for my fiancée so that she could marry someone else?"

He quickly corrected me, saying, "No! She didn't marry him. They're just going to keep the marriage certificate for a month. It's only for show. Celine will still marry you."

There was even a hint of helplessness in his voice. "Gabriel, I'm stuck in the middle too."

He had personally helped someone else destroy my marriage, and now, he expected me to understand his predicament. Was this really my best friend from childhood?

I hung up and pulled my suitcase down from the top of the closet and only took what truly belonged to me—my ID card, my laptop, a few changes of clothes, and the accessories my father had left me. I had just zipped it when the sound of the digital lock unlocking came from the foyer.

Celine was back, carrying food from my usual barbecue place. "You haven't eaten?"

She placed the food on the table, as if the drama in the group chat had never happened.

I looked at her left hand. On her ring finger was the wedding ring I had designed myself.

"Is the marriage certificate real?" I asked.

Celine paused. "It's real, but it's not like what the people in the group chat made it out to be."

She took off her suit jacket, her voice tinged with weariness. "Hailey and the others kept stirring things up, and Dylan just got fired from his job. Everyone was watching. I couldn't just embarrass him in public."

"So you married him?"

She frowned and corrected me, "We just registered for marriage. We'll get it handled again in a month. It won't affect our wedding."

I was just calm, like seeing old news that had nothing to do with me.When I had been stationed here for a full year, headquarters officially appointed me as the project director for the region. When the appointment email arrived, I was reviewing the final version of the construction organization plan for the new project.Jim knocked on the door and came in. "Congratulations.""Thanks."He placed a new contract on the table. "The company hopes you will stay here for the long term. You will also be in charge of the local project team. How long do you need to consider?"I looked out of the window.A year ago, I only had one suitcase when I came here. I was unfamiliar with the local engineering standards, and I had no friends. I had no idea if I could even truly start a new life after leaving Celine. Now, my bookshelf was filled with engineering standards and project information. There were trophies from clients and the industry association on the table. The wall was also covered w

She looked down at the ring box. "I can wait. It doesn't matter if you stay here for a year or two. Once I finish handling all my affairs, we can start anew.""No need to wait.""Do you hate me that much?""I don't hate you."I held an umbrella and walked past Celine. "I just don't love you anymore."She did not come after me. After walking a long distance, I looked back. Celine was still standing in the snow, holding that ring like she was holding a piece of the seven years that were already gone forever. After that day, Celine never came to this country again. Occasionally, I would hear about her from mutual acquaintances.During the divorce proceedings, Dylan was living in the Jodie family's house. Jordan initially tried to persuade him to leave with some dignity. Later, when he started acting as the Jodie family's son-in-law and interfering in Celine's work and life, Jordan's attitude completely changed. The two had several major arguments at home.Dylan posted all the cha

"I did tell you."Celine froze.Three years ago, I was offered an exchange opportunity to come here. That night, I excitedly showed her the email. She merely glanced at it briefly before saying, "The wedding date hasn't been set yet. It's not appropriate for you to leave now."Later, she encountered funding problems in her business, so I voluntarily gave up that opportunity. Two years ago, the headquarters invited me again. Her mother was seriously ill, so I stayed.Half a year ago, they invited me for the third time. She hugged me and said, "We can go there together after the wedding."It was not that I had never said it. It was just that she always thought my opportunities could be postponed."Gabriel." Celine's voice tensed. "I'm already filing for divorce. Dylan refuses to. He moved into my father's house and claims to be the son-in-law of the Jodie family. My brother told him to leave, but he showed him our marriage certificate. He also sent the chat records from the group

"Does it matter?" "Yes." Celine's tone became urgent. "I've never thought of betraying you. I just wanted to fulfill a promise and make everyone happy." "Everyone? What about me?" I asked softly. She fell silent again. Someone called my name at the project launch event. Jim signaled for me to go over to be interviewed by the client and media. I glanced at the time. "Celine, I have work to do. Don't contact me anymore." "Gabriel!" I hung up. A few minutes later, Isaac sent me a voice message. I did not play it.He sent a text message. [Dylan admitted that his engagement wasn't called off because his fiancée changed her mind. It was because she discovered that he had been keeping a video of Celine from when she was 18. She asked him who he would choose if Celine was willing to marry him now. He didn't answer, so his fiancée called it off.]I stared at it.[After he returned, he got Hailey to organize that gathering, saying he just wanted to know if Celine's promise f

Celine still did not understand that I cancelled the wedding not because I wanted a better one; I just did not want the bride anymore.I blocked her email address before continuing to check and test the data.Half a month later, the first round of model testing was completed. For the first time, the client's representative reviewed the test results without asking for any revisions. "Why are the modules that moved outward larger than the other units?"I replied, "Because leaving doesn't make you incomplete. It means becoming yourself again."On the day of our original wedding date, it was raining here. At 7:00 am, the calendar app popped up with a reminder: [Wedding]I stared at it for a few seconds before pressing the delete button.Today was also the internal launch of the Return to Shore project. At 10:00 am, I stood at the back of the venue, checking the final version of the engineering model and presentation data.I wore the watch my father left me on my wrist.Thomas hel

The project at the headquarters was more difficult than I imagined. The plan left by the previous project leader had been rejected by the client three times. The client wanted the original waterfront walkway retained and flood control improved, while the new protective structure should not appear closed and bulky. After three days of meetings, we had gotten nowhere.Someone proposed to continue to raise the traditional concrete flood wall. Someone wanted to use a large-span steel structure to completely enclose the entire shoreline. The arguments became louder and louder.Jim tapped the table. "Gabriel, you've been quiet."Everyone's gaze fell on me.I looked at the engineering drawings on the projection screen. Those protective components were stacked row by row along the shoreline, arranged neatly and securely. They also completely separated the waterfront."I want to change the direction of it." I stood up and walked to the whiteboard. "The protective structure doesn't necessa
