Chapter 13

Author: Anonymous
Not long after the wedding, Fiona came to the door again. She stood outside, her eyes swollen and red.

"Caleb, if I hadn’t gone to that party back then, we…"

"We would’ve gotten married," I finished the sentence for her.

She froze in place, unsure what to think.

I continued calmly, "After marriage, you would’ve had countless reasons to attend all kinds of gatherings. Eventually, you would’ve still cheated. In the end, it wouldn’t have turned out any differently."

"How can you be so sure I would’ve cheated after marriage?!" Fiona bristled indignantly.

I looked at her, my tone flat. "Because you cheated the night you went to the bachelorette party. That’s a fact. You avoid it once, and there will still be a next time."

Just then, Iris came up behind me, carrying freshly cooked dishes, and called softly, "Come try the new dish, honey."

Fiona pushed past me and shouted toward Iris, "You really think he’ll like you for long?! We were together for three years, and he still dropped me

I knew Fiona wouldn’t give up so easily, so on the eve of the wedding, I made some preparations. The wedding went ahead as scheduled. The two of us invited close friends and held a lively ceremony together.Grandma sat in her rocking chair, holding my hand and calling me Cale, then holding Iris’s hand and calling her Riri.Over and over again, Iris answered her patiently.Grandma smiled, and so did I.In this world, Grandma was the one I worried about most. I was afraid she might hold a grudge because Iris was Fiona’s sister, but my worry turned out unnecessary.Iris had truly done what she promised.Grandma liked her very much. Then, the uninvited guests arrived.Fiona and Mrs. Hartley appeared at the wedding, their eyes red and swollen.Gavin followed closely behind, his expression like a warrior about to charge into battle for the woman he loved."Caleb…"Fiona had just opened her mouth when Gavin pointed at me and declared righteously, "Caleb! Are you even a man?! Fiona

I didn’t go home.Instead, I followed Iris to her place. After we went inside, she seemed to realize she’d lost her composure and lowered her head, not daring to look at me.I went to take a shower. When I came out, I saw that she had placed the marriage certificate neatly in the display cabinet in the center of the living room. She lifted her head to look at it again, like a child who had suddenly been given candy but didn’t dare eat it. When she noticed me, she turned her face slightly, her expression impossible to read."Caleb, I really envy Fiona."At my school events, Mom was always absent. The scarves she knitted in winter never included me. It feels like everyone only likes Fiona. "You too."At that point, she gave a self-mocking smile. "Ever since we were little, Fiona took everything I liked."I once raised a stray cat. Fiona wanted it. Less than three days later, the cat’s body was found in the trash."In high school, I had a chance at early admission, but I misse

Soon, the day came to register our marriage. That day, Iris wore a dress for once, tugging me out the door with barely concealed urgency. Before we left, I received a call from Fiona. She spoke uneasily on the other end. "Caleb, have you been scrolling videos lately?""Yeah."Iris stood beside me, waiting quietly.I stepped forward, took her hand, and said to the person on the line, "Do you need something? If not, I’m going to register our marriage."Fiona paused. She clearly knew what had happened on the day we viewed the house. Even so, her tone remained light."You’re joking again. I haven’t gone back yet. How could you register it?"Stamped. Photographed. That was it.Just like that, it was done.Only the person beside me in the photo wasn’t Fiona, who had been with me for three years. It was Iris, someone I’d known for less than a month.Iris held up the marriage certificate, taking photo after photo. After a long while, she carefully put it away, then scrolled throug

Grandma’s condition fluctuated. Sometimes she was clear, sometimes confused. The hardest part was that she still remembered Fiona.Iris insisted I didn't worry. She said she had a way. Whatever Fiona could do, she could do too, and she could do it better. She said seriously, "I will absolutely put Grandma at ease. I’m better than Fiona."From that point on, Iris became even busier: preparing for the wedding, taking care of Grandma, running home from time to time to ask for my opinion. It was as if she wanted to split herself into three, yet from beginning to end, she never complained. When I had been busiest before, it was always Fiona who took care of Grandma. Now it had suddenly become another girl, practically a stranger.Someone at the hospital must have had Fiona’s contact information, because they called her to ask about it. Because of that, Fiona, who had disappeared for a week, finally called me."Caleb, is Iris taking care of Grandma?""Yes."She sounded flustered, gui

After packing her things, just before leaving, Fiona lifted her chin and said to Iris, "Sis, help me handle the wedding arrangements. When I’m back in the second half of the month, you’ll be able to relax."Iris lowered her head and stayed silent, neither agreeing nor refusing.Only after Fiona left did she ask me, "When can we go see Grandma?""Very soon," I said.On the third day of Fiona’s trip, her mother called me. She told me that Fiona had been sickly since childhood and had a heart condition, hinting again and again that I should be more accommodating.I gave a few perfunctory responses. Then I turned around and saw Fiona’s face trending on the local hot searches. It looked like a bonfire party with young men and women gathered around the fire.Fiona’s pretty face stood out among the crowd. Sitting beside her was Gavin, his arm wrapped intimately around her shoulders. As the camera shifted, Gavin lowered his head and gazed at Fiona in his arms with affection. She smiled
