Chapter 7 A New Evan

Author: J.J. Twelve
Evan laughed. "Do you have any idea how big Silveraberg is?"

Even the Norwoods, the family that abandoned him, were an important part of Silverton, yet they were nothing more than a speck of dust in Silveraberg. The Solberg family was a big one, yet not even they could control the whole of Silveraberg.

Silveraberg was on par with Uppersea, and maybe even Imperia. A single person having enough power to grant him immunity in Silveraberg? Preposterous.

The bodyguard shook his head and grinned. "No, and I don't have to."

Evan noticed he stood taller the moment he said that. That was pride that came from within. If a bodyguard had that much pride, then his employer must have even more of that.

"Very well," said Evan. "But there's one more thing I must do before I go."

"But I thought you cut your family off already." The bodyguard was surprised.

Evan said nothing. Instead, he told the bodyguard to drive him to the mall. Then, he watched Evan walk into a barber shop. "What are we doing here?"

Evan told the barber, "I need a change of hairstyle."

The barber sized him up. He kindly said, "Sir, that's the most popular style of the year. I can see a top fashion artist styled you up. There’s nothing to change!"

"I hate this hairstyle. Just change it!" said Evan coldly.

The heiresses' obsession with controlling everything about Evan had gone into total overdrive. They dictated everything about him, down until his hairstyle and clothes. They were the ones who came up with the whole style he was wearing now, and they forbade him from changing it how he wanted.

If he tried to, and they found out, they would punish him.

There was this one time where they made him wear a custom-made tuxedo, and the collar was suffocating him, so he changed out of it.

The heiresses went ballistic when they found out. He would never forget how they roared at him. He thought they would tear him apart and eat his remains. The heiresses dressed him up as Zeke would dress himself up.

His clothes, his accessories, and even his hair were all Zeke's style.

Evan had enough of that.

He gave the money back, and they were estranged. Now, he wanted to be himself.

"Give me a buzzcut!" demanded Evan, and something radiated around him.

The barber was shocked, and he quickly trimmed Evan's hair.

With every move, more of Evan's hair fell. Freshness welled within his heart. It wasn’t just hair he was cutting off; it was the chains of the past. He was killing the fetters that kept him locked. He could feel the collar around his neck fading away.

Soon, the haircut was done. Evan stood before the mirror, looking at his reflection. The style change made him handsome, his lines sharp.

Evan was more aggressive now, inside out. He had the air of a real man. Buzzcut was a true test of a man's looks.

The idol look still made him look good, but it lacked a man’s powerful air. Now he had that air. His eyes blazed like roaring braziers shining with energy.

The bodyguard watched the whole trim, and he was stunned. All Evan did was trim his hair, and it almost felt like he had a total makeover.

Evan left the barber shop and stepped into a men's fashion store. He took off the expensive custom-made suit the heiresses bought for him and changed into casual wear.

He hated suits. They were very suffocating. Loose casual wear was more his style. These changes meant the old Evan was dead.

The man standing here now was a new man.

"What do we do with these?" The bodyguard pointed at the ring, bracelet, necklace, and all the other accessories. These items came from Bulgari's charity gala.

"You can have them," said Evan nonchalantly.

"What?"

While he was taking off all the chains and fetters the heiresses put on him, they were giving Zeke a present. It was a whole new suit.

"We made this ourselves. I came up with the design, Roxanne hunted the best materials around, and Anya hired the most famous suit maker in the whole world to make it. It's one of its kind. Do you like it?" Hazel's eyes were filled with love.

Zeke nodded hard. "I do!" He changed into the suit. The heiresses watched him with dazzling eyes. Now, they wanted to hug him.

"You look good. Suits look perfect on you."

"Of course they do! Well, Evan can dress, but he's miles behind Zeke."

The heiresses were reminded of Evan. They thought, 'If Evan were to wear the same suit, he'd still lose out to Zeke.'

He was their replacement, after all. They only made him wear what Zeke liked just to find a shadow of him. The heiresses would never know that their longing-fueled decision created the perfect dream for Evan that turned out to be a web that had him trapped firmly within.

Eventually, the web tightened up, and the ropes cut him until every inch of his body was bleeding.

The heiresses noticed Zeke's look. The excitement turned into sadness, and he quietly took the suit off. "Keep this for Evan. I don't have long to live."

Zeke acted like he'd gotten over it, but the heiresses were shaken.

"That's nonsense, Zeke!" An agitated Anya said, "We've been waiting for you! Searching for you! Now that you're finally here, we won't let you die!"

"Yeah! Someone with the same blood type is already out there somewhere! Evan is not the only one now! You'll have nothing to fear once we find them!" Roxanne agreed.

A hint of violence flickered in Zeke's eyes, but he pretended to be in pain. "You haven’t found the donor? I don't want to see Evan in pain anymore!"

Once that person was found, Evan would be redundant to him. Even if he died, the heiresses wouldn't say anything about it. A hint of murder flickered across his face when they weren't looking.

Roxanne was the one leading the search. She shook her head. "Not yet, but we'll find them soon. No matter the outcome, Evan will give you his blood anytime."

Zeke stared into the distance, his gaze terrifyingly cruel. He thought, 'Life must be hard for you, eh? But don't worry. Once we find that donor, I'll put you out of your misery.'

Waves of hurried footsteps echoed in the hospital's corridor.

"What's the ruckus?" Anya frowned.

Hazel looked outside, but she did not leave the ward. "It's probably an influx of patients."

It was not. Evan was right under the building, watching the patrolling group in stunned awe. Medical staff aside, there were special forces walking around, and they were armed. The footsteps came from these soldiers.

The bodyguard noticed Evan's shock, and he smiled. "They're Old Mr. Stanton's visitors."

"Who's—" Evan didn't need the answer. That must be Sylvie's grandfather. Now he wondered who she really was. She promised no one in Silveraberg could touch him, and now her grandfather's presence attracted even the special forces.

The ER was packed. An old man demanded, "How much longer must we wait, Sylvie? Your grandfather's already dead!"

That man was Sylvie's uncle, William Stanton. Everyone else either kept their silence or watched the old man in the operating theater. His eyes were closed, like he was sleeping.

Sylvie's grandfather, the imposing and respected Iron Dragon, passed away moments ago. The military, as per law, would take the corpse of a high-standing officer like his away for a grand funeral.

However, Sylvie protested as hard as she could. Tear tracks covered her face, but her eyes were filled with determination. "Just give it a minute! He'll show up! He can save Grandpa!"

Fortunately, their efforts were enough to get his breathing under control."Zeke, you'll be fine. We still have Evan even though we got scammed!""If push comes to shove, we'll just nab Evan off the streets and force him to do a blood transfusion!"They knew it might cause irreversible consequences, but they were willing to risk everything for Zeke's sake. Alas, their words didn't assuage Zeke's panic. If anything, it only made his panic worse. He wasn't rattled by the scamming. Hazel and the others being fooled had nothing to do with him. However, he did care about Evan's life. After all, his lifeline was about to be killed. The three women stared at him in confusion. 'What?! Synthetic blood? We got scammed?!'A dull boom echoed in Zeke's mind as he staggered backward and collapsed onto the hospital bed. His brain had gone completely blank. Soon, he felt a crushing weight pressed hard against his chest. It felt so heavy that the sheer weight made it seem that it could stop his heart altogether. After all, his plans had just gone up in flames. In fact, now he was terrified of one possibility—Evan dying. He would never have sent someone after Evan if he'd known the blood was fake. When Hazel, Roxanne, and Anya rushed in after hearing the news, their faces had gone pale."Are you sure? You'd better not be messing around!" Hazel demanded urgently, glaring at the doctor."I am. We ran extraction tests over and over. This is synthetic blood."After multiple rounds of testing, they quickly discovered the truth—the blood was artificial, meant to mimic the real thing.'Boom!'The women started to tremble when they laid their eyes on the real test r

Roxanne frowned as they headed toward the hospital."It's probably because of that banquet," Hazel and Anya reasoned. Roxanne thought about it carefully and found that there really was no other reason. Still, the Stone family banquet hadn't exactly been their fault. They arrived at the hospital shortly after. The arrangement was simple. All they had to do was take the blood bags and pay afterward. Unfortunately, they didn't see the so-called donor when they arrived. Instead, a nurse hurried over with a blood bag and a slip of paper. She said this was the blood they needed, along with the bank account the donor wanted the money wired to. The nurse explained that the donor didn't want any unnecessary contact with them. The nurse also said that the hospital had already tested the blood, and it was a match. Only then did the three heiresses finally relax and transfer the money.Zeke's face lit up when he heard it was the right blood type. As the transfusion began, his condition began

"What? You found him?!" Anya blurted in astonishment."Yes! After I posted the reward notice, someone contacted me and said he was the one who donated blood at the hospital that day!"If Evan had been there, he would've been stunned. He was the actual donor. Hence, anyone else could only be an impostor.Unfortunately, the girls didn't know that. They genuinely thought the mysterious donor had been found. There was finally hope for Zeke's survival.Anya immediately rushed to the hospital to meet up with Hazel and Roxanne. "Who is he?"Roxanne handed over the man's information. That individual was a complete stranger. He also had demands, specifically that he wanted to be paid 750 thousand upfront before agreeing to donate."Can we trust him?" Anya frowned."He sent over a copy of his lab results. It should be genuine," Hazel said. "Besides, Zeke's condition is getting worse."The three of them turned toward Zeke. He was coughing nonstop, his body shivering as he lay on the bed.

'Well, would you look at that… Ms. Stanton has an incredible figure with curves in all the right places. She definitely lived up to her name of being sylph-like.'Sylvie was slender, completely different from Ivana, who embodied a mature, alluring kind of beauty.Evan had already noticed her figure back when he treated her illness. Still, he hadn't expected her to be so perfectly proportioned. She was the kind of woman who looked delicate in clothes, but looked stunning even without them. What struck him even more was the confusion on her face as she stared at her reflection, poking at her curves, turning this way and that. She was even sighing in frustration as if she truly believed something was wrong.Evan found himself staring, completely absorbed by the scene before him. It wasn't until he felt an odd heat running down his sinuses that he snapped out of it. When he touched his nose, his fingers came away bloody.'A nosebleed?!' He stared at his fingers, utterly shocked. Then,

That life-saving drug was the Leightons' most treasured heirloom. It had been crafted by a medical grandmaster from Imperia. No one ever dared to use it. Yet, Roxanne had stolen it and forced it between Evan's lips.Evan would never forget that night. He had been moments from death when a figure came stumbling toward him barefoot. He could still remember that she had even lost one of her heels while running for her life. He had seen a swarm of vehicles chase her down. He could still remember the battle cries echoing through the streets. Yet, she still pushed a pill into his mouth. After that, Roxanne vanished for three days. Rumor had it that the Leightons dragged her home and confined her to the family's private oratory for three full days.It had been touching back then. However, it only felt absurd after he knew the whole story. "But it doesn't matter anymore. Once I push the Ninefold Arcane Arts to the next stage, I'll return that life-saving drug to you."Evan estimated th
