Getting to know somebody through someone else’s perspective, gives you an insight of the bond that they share with that person. Augustus could see how much Austin cared for the raven-haired boy, in the way he spoke about him. Hearing about how Lucas was raising Evan, so selflessly, despite being this young and inexperienced, filled him with sublime admiration. It was not just an act of kindness, it was something much deeper than that, an example of the beautiful simplicity of love, which was too complex to be put in words. After the brief conversation about Luke’s background with Austin, Augustus silently sat on the couch, submerged in his thoughts, with little Evan snug in his lap, fiddling with a set of new crayons.
