Chapter 6

Author: Shirley Snow
The slap was so loud that it echoed in the living room for a long time.

Shane covered his cheek with his hand, and the look in his eyes turned cold. "How dare you slap me? Josie loves me more than her life, and she would never lay a finger on me. Who do you think you are?"

He ordered the bodyguards, "Press him to the ground!"

The bodyguards hesitated. They looked at Tyler, and then at Shane.

Shane narrowed his eyes and said viciously, "You work for Josie. Think about it. Who is more important to her?"

The bodyguards went silent for a moment before deciding to hold Tyler down. Tyler laughed until tears streamed down his cheeks. Everyone knew that Shane was the most important person to Josie. Tyler was the only one who spent six years finding out this shocking secret.

Before he knew what was happening, Shane had raised his hand.

When the first slap landed on his cheek, Tyler felt a burning sensation spreading across his face. The second slap came quickly after, and the third…

Tyler struggled to escape, and he yelled hoarsely, "Aren't you worried that Josie would come home to punish you when she finds out what you did, Shane?"

Shane laughed arrogantly. "Josie has been cleaning up my messes since I was young, and that would include me hitting her husband." He leaned forward to whisper in Tyler's ear, "Remember, Tyler, that I'm her one and only."

After that, he continued slapping Tyler again and again.

Tyler struggled with all his might, but he could not move much because the bodyguards kept a tight grip on him.

The slaps came down on Tyler like a storm, and he started to lose consciousness. His cheeks burned with pain, like a million needles were piercing them. His sight started to blur from his tears, but he could see the perverted joy on Shane's face.

"How many slaps have I given him?" Shane asked one of the bodyguards.

"Ninety-nine," he replied.

"We should make it a round number," Shane said with a smile.

The last slap came down hard, and Tyler coughed up blood from it. All he saw was black, and he passed out. While he was floating in and out of consciousness, he heard the door open and someone yell, "What are you doing?!"

When Tyler woke up, he was lying in his bed. Josie was sitting next to him, and she said calmly, "I know what happened today."

Tyler's throat was dry, and he asked hoarsely, "And?"

"Shane was spoiled since young," she said with indifference. "I've already punished him, so please don't take this to heart."

Tyler stared at her and asked, "How did you punish him?"

She was silent for a moment before she took some hair out of her pocket. "He cut your hair, so I cut some of his hair as an apology to you."

He thought this was ridiculous. "What about the fact that he slapped me a hundred times? Did you punish him by slapping him only once?"

She maintained her composure. "His hand was swollen from slapping you. That's punishment enough."

Tyler was taken aback, but he suddenly laughed so hard that tears streamed down his face. He asked himself, "Why did I ever fall for you, Josie Sinclair?"

She was about to say something when he grabbed the vase by his bed and smashed it hard onto the ground.

"Get out!" he roared with reddened eyes.

She stood up, sounding calm as usual. "I know you're angry right now, but the doctor said you have to rest well. You should calm down."

After that, she turned to leave.

When the door closed behind her, Tyler could no longer hold back his tears as he sobbed silently.

The entire place was silent.Josie stood at the edge of light and shadow, coffee stains from the flight still on the hem of her dress. Her usually elaborately styled long hair hung messily over her forehead."Ms. Sinclair, are you trying to steal my groom?" Elena narrowed her eyes.Josie ignored her, walked straight to Tyler, and knelt. Her voice was so hoarse it was almost inaudible. "I know I deserve to die for my sins, but please just give me one more look..."The guests were in an uproar. The head of the Sinclairs of Capnorth, who was a cold and untouchable saint, was now kneeling perfectly upright.Tyler took a step back. "Josie, don't do this.""I wrote 300 love letters, from the time we first met until we married and then..." Her voice grew even more hoarse. "The day I fell in love with you but didn't dare to admit it."She trembled as she opened the box, and white letters fluttered like butterflies.Tyler remained unmoved, not even glancing at them. He slowly shook his

Shane stood still. "What?" "Now that you've married into that family, just live with it." Josie's tone was calm. Then she looked up at the woman in front of her. "Don't hit him. You know the consequences." The woman nodded repeatedly and stepped forward, grabbing Shane's wrist. "Honey, go back. I'll take good care of you." Even if she could not hit him, she still had many methods to torment him. Moreover, she was ugly, fat, and old, while he was a strong and young man full of vitality. Shane struggled frantically. "Josie! How could you treat me like this? You said you would always protect me! You said I mattered the most to you! Josie... I was wrong... Josie..."His hysterical cries faded away, and Josie walked into the study without looking back.In the family's chapel, she personally lit everything related to Shane—photos, gifts, the paintings he drew when he was young… The flames consumed the past, and the ashes floated in the air. From now on, only Tyler's presence wou

Elena stirred the coffee slowly in the coffee shop.Josie's first words made her hand pause. "Give Tyler back to me. I'll trade anything for him."Elena raised an eyebrow. "Anything?"Josie's voice was hoarse. "Yes. Sinclair Industries' shares, land in Capnorth, my assets overseas… Even..." She closed her eyes for a moment. "I could bring Shane back and have him personally apologize to Tyler."Elena suddenly smiled. She put down the coffee cup as a hint of mockery flashed in her azure eyes. "Josie, don't you get it yet? Tyler isn't a commodity. He's a human being with flesh and blood that feels pain and cries. You once had all his genuine affection, but you crushed it with your own hands."Elena stood up and looked condescendingly at her. "Now, it's my turn to love him.""As for you..." She chuckled softly. "Just spend the rest of your life with your guilt."Josie sat still, watching Elena's retreating figure. Suddenly, she recalled something from many years ago.Tyler had done

The crying suddenly stopped. Shane's voice was trembling as he asked shrilly in disbelief, "What do you mean, Josie?"Josie closed her eyes. She sounded tired. "I spoiled you too much before. Now that you've married into that family, try to live a good life. If you really can't take it, tell Mom and Dad about it. I don't have the time to take care of this."Josie laughed bitterly. "Besides, if I took care of this, Tyler would never forgive me."Shane's breathing quickened, and he started screaming hysterically, "Have you really fallen for Tyler Ford?!"Josie was silent for a while before replying softly, "Yes."Her answer was the last straw for Shane. "Impossible!" Shane's scream could shatter an eardrum. "I'm the one you love! Why would you love him?! You're lying! You must be lying to me!"Shane kept trying to convince himself and Josie otherwise by talking about their childhood, how she indulged him, and the moments of sexual tension between them.Josie remained silent thro

The smell of disinfectant was so strong that it hurt the nostrils.Josie opened her eyes, and the first thing she saw was the white ceiling. She tried moving her finger, and it felt like her skeleton had been taken apart and reassembled. It was painful."Awake?" Zoey was sitting by her bed and peeling the skin of an apple slowly with a knife. The blade reflected the cold light in her eyes. "You're pretty lucky to come out of this alive."Josie's throat felt scratchy. "Where's Tyler?""He's taking care of Elena next door." Zoey smiled maliciously. "I started the fire and drugged you and Elena, making you weak in the limbs so that you couldn't run. The first person Tyler saved was Elena."The apple skin broke, and Zoey flung it into the bin."You should see how anxious he was. He stood vigil by Elena the entire night and was nearly wailing."Zoey's words were like a blunt knife cutting into Josie's heart slowly. She was reminded of the cold, distant look in Tyler's eyes, and how h

Josie was standing in front of the window when someone knocked on the door. The cigarette between her fingers was almost completely burned up. She opened the door to see Zoey leaning against the door with a glass of amber-colored whiskey in her hand."I heard you punched Elena." Zoey raised an eyebrow and passed Josie the glass.Josie did not enjoy drinking, and she always drank tea instead, but in that moment, she needed something to numb the waves of emotion raging inside her. She took the glass from Zoey and finished it in one gulp. The burning feeling in her throat felt just like the suffocating feeling she had when she saw Tyler and Elena entangled in a passionate embrace."She was in bed with Tyler." Josie's voice was terribly hoarse. "I couldn't stand to see it.""Tyler?" Zoey suddenly laughed, but the look in her eyes was icy. "How interesting. It's been six years, and this is the first time I've heard you say my little brother's name so tenderly."It could be the effects
