CALANTHA

For the rest of the week, I did my best to avoid Kaiden. The only time we crossed paths was at dinner, where we both kept to ourselves, and he acted like I wasn’t even there.

It hurt. I won’t lie. But I had no right to be upset.

He was right. The only thing tying us together was the contract, and I would be a fool to let myself fall for him. So, I spent those days trying to numb whatever I felt, mentally scolding myself whenever I caught a glimpse of him around the packhouse and my heart stupidly fluttered.

To make things easier, I made sure not to ride with him to the academy that week. He didn’t seem to care, as he went in a separate car without a second thought.

This stupid crush I felt towards him had done nothing but break me, but maybe that was a good thing. I needed the wake up call.

A slave, crushing on the Lycan King? I almost laughed out loud.

I must have lost my mind.

The weekend finally arrived, and it was the day of my visit to the refugee camp. Queen Adeline se

CALANTHA The woman led us to a small tent that looked worn out and messy. Inside, my chest tightened at the sight before me. A frail little boy lay on the bare ground, his tiny body unmoving. His leg was wrapped in a filthy rag, and his face was pale, almost lifeless. The woman quietly stepped outside again, giving me space. Eloise and Nyx stayed by my side. “Oh my god.” Nyx whispered, a small sob escaping her lips. Eloise immediately pulled her into a comforting hug.I swallowed hard, forcing back my own tears. Then, walking towards the boy, I knelt beside him and carefully lifted his head into my arms. His skin was cold and his breathing was weak.Slowly, I reached for his injured leg and started unwrapping the rag.“Calantha, what are you doing?” Eloise’s voice rang in alarm. “You could make it worse!”I didn’t reply to her. Instead, I kept going until the rag came loose, revealing the full extent of the injury. The wound was deep, infected, and rotting.Nyx let out another stran

KAIDEN “My King, Ryker is here.” Bradley announced, standing at the head of the dining table as I cut into my steak.“Let him in.” I replied without looking up, sliding the bite into my mouth and chewing slowly.I was the one who had invited Ryker over, but now, I regretted it. Ever since my last encounter with Calantha, my mood had been off and everything else felt unimportant.I didn’t know why. Maybe it was because I hurt her when she didn’t deserve it. Still, I wouldn’t take back my words if I could. It was for her own good.A minute later, Bradley returned with Ryker trailing behind him. I lifted my gaze briefly, meeting his mischievous eyes as he bowed.“My King.”I said nothing and focused back on my meal. Without waiting for permission, Ryker pulled out a chair and sat a few seats away from me. The servants quickly set a plate in front of him, arranging food on the table.Noticing his hesitation to eat, a smirk crossed my lips. Setting my knife and fork down, I leaned back s

RYKERTHE NEXT DAYSHADOW MOON PACK - ALPHA SLADE’S PACKHOUSEI stepped out of my car and took in the sight of my father’s packhouse, chewing the gum in my mouth as I leaned against the door. It had been over a year since I last came here.No matter how much my father nagged me to visit, I always found an excuse to stay away.Maybe it was because coming here reminded me of my future as the next Alpha of this pack. But I wanted more. I didn’t want to be just another Alpha. I wanted power. Real power over the entire realm.I wanted to be the Lycan King. And I had been so close to making that happen. But that bastard Kaiden kept crossing the line.I clenched my jaw at the memory of last night. The humiliation he had made me suffer. That was the only reason I was here now. Anything to make that son of a bitch pay for how much he had humiliated me last night. With a sigh, I shoved my hands into my pockets and walked into the packhouse. The guards and servants bowed the moment they saw me

CALANTHA“‘You think my distance is cruelty? No, my love. It is mercy. To love me is to walk willingly into the dark, and you... you were made for the light.’”“Pain bloomed in her eyes. Pain he put there. She didn’t believe him, not yet. But she would. He would make sure of it. Because loving her meant letting her go before she realized that monsters like him didn’t get happy endings.”With those final words, our literature professor closed the book in his hands and looked up at us."So, let’s talk about the protagonist of The Caged Heart," he said, setting the book aside. "Was he right to push the heroine away? Was he protecting her, or was he just being selfish?""He was absolutely being selfish." I blurted before I could stop myself.A few heads turned in my direction, and from the corner of my eye, I saw Kaiden glance my way too.I forced myself not to look at him, taking a deep breath to steady my nerves. Maybe I had answered too impulsively. But something about the book felt to

CALANTHA “… And do you know what she said after that?” Lysandra recounted her ordeal. Tate, Eloise, and Nyx leaned in, listening intently as we sat at our usual table in the cafeteria where Lysandra and Tate joined us. “She claimed I was too fragile and feminine to be a cheerleader. Can you believe that?”“Ugh, Isadora and her minions are just jealous.” Eloise scoffed, rolling her eyes.Lysandra was telling us how she made the cheer squad despite Isadora’s efforts to sabotage her during the auditions. But while my friends were fully engaged in the conversation, only half of my attention was on them. The other half was locked onto Kaiden. He was sitting with his teammates and their girlfriends at a table across the room, where everyone seemed lost in chatter. Everyone except him. Because his gaze was on me.I had caught him staring more than once, his eyes never straying. Every time I stole a glance in his direction, he was still watching. Unwavering. CALANTHA7:00pmI sat cross-legged on my bed, staring at the wall clock. One hour until the time Kaiden said we would go on that dinner date.Even though I knew he was a man of his word, and that he always did exactly what he said he would, part of me still had doubts. Maybe because I never imagined he would want to take me out on a date.I wondered why. Was he starting to like me too?I shook my head, forcing the thought away. I couldn’t afford to get my hopes up. If I let myself believe in something that wasn’t real, I would only end up hurt. Again.Needing a distraction, I climbed off my bed and walked to my desk, grabbing a pen and opening my notebook. Maybe if I focused on my assignment, I could push him out of my mind. But it didn’t take long before I found myself glancing at the clock again.7:20pm.Was he serious about this, or was he just messing with me?But Kaiden never lied. He had hurt me, more times than I could count, but he never made empty promises. The only reason I

CALANTHA I took a shaky step back, my fingers slipping from the doorknob as a quiet, broken gasp left my lips. My chest tightened, like all the air had been sucked out of my lungs. Tears blurred my vision as I stared at the scene before me. A single tear slipped down my cheek, but neither Kaiden nor Lysandra noticed me. They were too caught up in their kiss, with Lysandra’s hand trailing lower on his body. Unable to watch anymore, I swallowed the lump in my throat and slowly shut the door. Wiping my tear away, I forced myself to keep it together despite the sharp, unbearable ache in my chest. I turned and walked away, my lips trembling and my eyes burning with unshed tears. A deep, seething rage boiled inside me. Kaiden. That bastard. He had stood me up, left me waiting for hours, just so he could be with her! I should have known better. I should’ve seen this coming from miles away. How could I be so stupid and blind? Grinding my teeth, I grabbed the necklace around my neck, y

The furniture was perfectly matched to the walls, and expensive artwork hung in just the right spots. Everything looked effortlessly luxurious. “You have a nice place.” I said, genuinely impressed. “Thanks.” Tate smiled as we reached the spacious living room. He gestured toward the plush couch. “Have a seat. My parents are successful merchants in the pack. They migrated here years ago, and even though they weren’t originally from this pack, they managed to build a name for themselves.” “That’s really impressive.” I said, settling onto the soft cushions. During the drive here, Tate had kept the conversation flowing, talking about movies, his favorite artists, and his hobbies. I knew he was doing it to dis

Without even thinking twice, I turned and ran.“Stop her!” One of them yelled, and the rest immediately started chasing after me.My heart pounded hard in my chest as I pushed myself to run faster, my legs burning with effort. I just needed to get away, and make it back. But of course, I wasn’t fast enough.“Get back here, you little…” I felt someone grab the back of my hoodie and yank it. The hood slipped off, and panic flooded me. I twisted and struggled, trying to break free, but the man flung me aside with ease. I hit the ground hard, scraping my hand. A sharp pain shot through me, and I let out a low grunt.“Who the hell are you?” I demanded, backing away on the ground as the group circled me. They all wore black, their faces hidden behind masks, their eyes cold and cruel.“The Luna,” the one who had shouted earlier said as

I could see everything through the eyes of the baby she was holding, even though the woman’s face looked a bit blurred. She ran through the woods, stumbling over branches but quickly getting back on her feet. Her long white dress dragged along the forest floor as she moved, her face wet with tears and panic.Behind her, a group of incredibly tall men dressed in white robes chased after her. They held long staffs, and they looked terrifying. The woman turned her head again, gasping for breath, her eyes wide with fear. But just as she looked forward again, the hem of her dress caught on a broken branch. She fell to the ground with a heavy thud. But even as she hit the earth, she protected the baby in her arms, cradling the child’s head so it wouldn’t get hurt.“Give us the child,” one of the men ordered. KAIDEN“The tournament organizers, led by the High Priestess, have begun preparations,” Bradley reported calmly. “From what I’ve seen in the mails sent to you, several high-ranking figures will begin arriving in our pack starting tomorrow. The Vampire King is among them. His crowned prince will be participating in the tournament as well.”My hand froze mid-sentence, the quill pausing just above the paper. I had been drafting formal invitations to other royals across the realm, but Bradley’s last words caught my attention.“The Vampire Prince?” I asked, glancing up at him with a slight frown. “Didn’t he take part in the last tournament with me?”Bradley nodded. “Yes, my King. Like you, this will be his second, and final tournament.”“Interesting.” I muttered, eyes returning to the letter I had been writing.Back then, the Vampire Prince had proven himself a worthy opponent. He was tactical, fierce, and unpredictable. He had made the games challenging, not just for me but for the entire

LYSANDRAI took a deep breath, a soft smile spreading across my face as I sipped my tea. The warm scent of flowers and herbs from the garden surrounded me, wrapping me in a calm I rarely found anywhere else.It was early morning, and the academy was on a short break for the next two days. That meant I could spend time in my favorite place. The garden. The break had been given because of the upcoming tournament. Preparations had already started, and soon the pack would be buzzing with important guests from different packs, clans, and kingdoms. But for now, everything was still and quiet.Days like this were the ones I treasured the most. Sitting here, away from all the noise, just watching the flowers sway in the wind, the butterflies flit around, and the squirrels chase each other with tiny nuts. It felt like a little piece of heaven. My smile faded a little as my eyes caught a squirrel struggling under a low shrub. I leaned in for a closer look and noticed its leg was injured. It loo

At least he was still alive. For a second, I had thought I killed him.“You…” he groaned, trying to crawl toward me, reaching for my foot. The cold water stung the open cuts on my back from Aunt Diane’s whip, making me flinch every time it touched my skin. I bit back the tears, trying not to cry as I washed the blood away.Once I was done, I changed into the usual lingerie I wore on nights like this—thin, see-through, and short. It stopped just above my thighs, showing the lace panties and bra I wore underneath. I hated it. But I didn’t have a choice.I sat in front of the mirror, spraying some perfume on my neck and wrists. The smell filled the air, sweet and heavy. My stomach twisted, and I felt sick. My eyes were full of tears, but I held them back. NYXI didn’t miss the way Eloise kept glancing at me with concern during the entire car ride from the academy. Her silence spoke louder than words. Every time I felt her eyes on me, I looked away, pretending to be interested in the scenery outside the window, pretending everything was fine. When we finally arrived at my aunt’s mansion, I opened the door and stepped out quietly, shutting it behind me. Just as I turned to leave, her voice stopped me.“Should I come in with you?” She asked through the rolled-down window, her tone gentle but filled with worry.I forced a small smile onto my face as I looked up at her. “It’s fine. You don’t have to.”But the moment our eyes met, she caught the fear behind my mask. I saw it in her face—the way her expression shifted. She opened her door and got out at once. “Come on,” she said, reaching for my hand. “Let’s go in together.”“I already said it’s fine.” I pulled my hand back softly, not harshly, but firm enough that she understood I wasn’t g

A wide, happy smile lit up her face, just like his. “Calantha. I remember now. Damn, I thought I was going to lose my mind back there.”I laughed softly, still catching my breath. It felt so strange that just a few minutes ago, I couldn’t even recognize the girl beside me as my best friend. This trial was definitely the hardest, scariest, and most confusing thing we had ever faced. And honestly, I would give anything not to go through the main tournament after this.“Come on. Let’s go find Nyx.” Eloise said, pushing herself up and reaching a hand out to me. I took it and stood, brushing dried leaves and dirt off my clothes. The others got up too, and I looked around.Other participants were stepping

A soft hum echoed through the room, and suddenly, a glowing clock appeared on one of the mirrors.00:10:59.An eleven-minute countdown.Fear climbed up my throat.
