The call came while I was alone in the house.

Richard had left an hour earlier to meet with someone about the Vermont property paperwork, utilities, the practical things we could no longer postpone. Adrianna was at her lawyer’s office again. The silence they both left behind felt heavier than usual. I was standing in the kitchen drinking lukewarm tea when my phone lit up with a number I didn’t recognize.

  • Step Daddy's Lakeside Sin    The Woman on the Other End

(Millie POV)The call came while I was alone in the house.Richard had left an hour earlier to meet with someone about the Vermont property paperwork, utilities, the practical things we could no longer postpone. Adrianna was at her lawyer’s office again. The silence they both left behind felt heavier than usual. I was standing in the kitchen drinking lukewarm tea when my phone lit up with a number I didn’t recognize.I almost ignored it. Then something in my gut told me not to. I answered.“Hello, Millie.”The voice was smooth, cultured, and instantly familiar even though I had only heard it a few times before. My fingers tightened around the phone.“Vivienne.”“I was beginning to wonder if you would pick up,” she said. “You strike me as the type who screens unknown numbers. Especially lately.”I walked to the window and looked out at the empty driveway, as if she might be standing there. “How did you get this number?”“You’d be surprised how little effort it takes when a person decid

  • Step Daddy's Lakeside Sin    The Papers

(Adrianna POV)I placed the folder on the kitchen island with more care than it deserved. The lawyer had given it to me the day before in a cream-colored office that smelled of coffee and expensive paper. Inside were the first drafts; separation documents, temporary arrangements, a clean outline of how the house would remain mine, which was not final. Not yet. But the language was already cold enough to make the air in my own kitchen feel thinner. I had spent most of the morning sitting with it. Reading the same paragraphs until the words stopped meaning anything. Twenty-one days left. That was the number I kept turning over in my mind. Twenty-one days until the deadline I myself had set became something that could no longer be postponed with silence. Footsteps came down the stairs. It was Millie’s first. Then Richard’s a few seconds later. They moved through the house with that careful quiet they had both perfected. The kind of quiet people use when they are trying not to disturb a s

  • Step Daddy's Lakeside Sin    The Lines Start to Blur

(Millie POV)I didn’t expect to see him in the grocery store. It was late afternoon, the kind of gray hour when the fluorescent lights made everything look slightly sick. I had only come for a few things. To get some ginger tea, the crackers that sometimes helped the nausea, a bottle of vitamins Richard had ordered me to start taking. My mind was still tangled in the night before. Henrietta’s hurt face, Henry’s messages, the way Richard had fucked me like he was trying to brand the fear out of both of us. I turned the corner into the next aisle and stopped short. More or less like freezing in a spot.Henry stood near the far end, a small basket hanging from one hand, looking completely at ease. He wasn’t pretending to shop. He was waiting. Then, our eyes met.He smiled the same polite, unreadable smile he always wore and walked toward me like we were old acquaintances who had simply run into each other.“Millie,” he said. “Funny seeing you here.”My fingers tightened around the handle

  • Step Daddy's Lakeside Sin    When the Walls Close In

(Millie POV)Richard was awake when I opened the bedroom door. The lamp on his side of the bed was on. He was sitting up against the headboard, shirtless, phone in his hand like he had been minutes away from calling me. The second he saw my face, he set the phone down.“What happened? I didn't see you anywhere near the house.”I closed the door behind me and leaned against it for a moment, trying to steady my breathing. The drive home had done nothing to calm the panic sitting under my ribs. Henry’s messages kept replaying. Henrietta’s voice asking ‘who is he?’ kept replaying. The way she had looked at me when I refused to answer kept replaying.“He knows,” I said.Richard’s expression sharpened. “Who?”“Henry. He texted me while I was at Henrietta’s. He knew I was there. He knew she was telling me about the club. And he…” My voice caught. “He knows about the baby, Richard. He referenced the pregnancy like it was obvious. Like he’s been watching me long enough to see it on my body.”F

  • Step Daddy's Lakeside Sin    What I Couldn’t Say

(Millie POV)The silence after Henry’s last message felt louder than anything else in the room.Henrietta stood in the middle of her living room with her arms wrapped tightly around herself, staring at me like she was seeing a stranger. The phone in my hand had gone dark, but the words were still burned into my head. We didn't look at each other but the air itself felt the tension that was between us.“Pregnancy has a way of changing a person’s face.”She knew. He had made sure she knew.“Millie.” Her voice was thin. “How long?”I swallowed. My throat felt tight. “A little over eight weeks.”“Eight weeks.” She repeated the number like it might change if she said it enough times. “You’ve been walking around with this for eight weeks and you didn’t tell me.”“I couldn’t.”“Why?”Because the father is my mother’s husband. Because the same man you used to tell me to give a chance is the one who put this baby inside me. Because everything in my life is already on the edge of collapsing a

  • Step Daddy's Lakeside Sin    What I Wasn’t Supposed to Know

(Millie POV)I didn’t plan to go to Henrietta’s apartment that night.Richard had fallen asleep early, one arm still resting over my waist like he could keep the world out if he just held on tight enough. I had lain there staring at the ceiling for almost an hour, the number twenty-two circling in my head. Twenty-two days left. Adrianna’s lawyer. Vivienne’s silence that somehow felt louder than her threats. And Henry… always Henry, lingering at the edges of everything. When my phone lit up with a message from Henrietta, I almost ignored it.Henrietta:Are you awake? I need to talk. please.Something about the way she wrote please made my stomach tighten. I slipped out of bed as carefully as I could, pulled on a hoodie and leggings, and left Richard a short note on the nightstand. Then I drove across town with my hands too tight on the wheel. Henrietta opened the door before I could knock twice. Her eyes were red. Not freshly crying, but close. She stepped aside without a word and let
