Mason:

I knew about Rowena’s party.

I knew when she texted Lily about it. I knew when Lily started packing her little designer bag for it and I definitely knew when Rowena’s car pulled up outside the house to pick her up.

I acted like I didn’t know any of that though. Sat on the couch, scrolling through my phone, pretending I wasn’t paying attention because that’s what I was supposed to do. Give her space. Give her freedom, but the second the door shut behind her, I couldn’t sit still.

My chest felt tight. My mind wouldn’t stop throwing stupid pictures in my head of her laughing at some guy’s jokes, leaning on someone else’s shoulder, looking too damn good in one of those little dresses she bought in town.

I’d tried to give her space but fuck space, who cared about space when she drew problem to her?

Five minutes later, I was standing in front of my closet, pulling out a black hoodie, a cap, and shades. Disguise mode. If I was gonna show up, nobody had to know it was me.

I rushed out and found Mason. “Have you been crying?” was the first question he asked as soon as saw me. Shit! How did he even know that? “What? NO, I haven’t been crying.” I lied, wiping my eyes with the back of my hand. Were my eyes still swollen?
