"Yves, you got her name wrong again." Xenia Quade laughed as she corrected him. "Her name is Sarah Queen."

Yves Warren traced a finger around the rim of his glass before looking up at me in confusion. "It is?"

"Yeah. Sarah Cole is the heroine from that novel I recommended to you." As she spoke, Xenia leaned a little closer to him.

Yves let his hand fall away from the glass and nodded. "Guess I mixed them up."

There wasn't a trace of concern on his face. I found myself barely breathing.

So twenty-three years of growing up together couldn't compete with a novel he'd read.

Xenia rested her chin on her hand and blinked at him playfully. "Just don't copy the guy in the book. I still can't believe he ended up with the other girl."

My throat tightened, my fingers unconsciously bunching the fabric of my skirt.

Because the other woman in that book was named Xenia.

The light in Yves's eyes dimmed almost immediately, and when he spoke, his voice was low.

"I thought those two made a pretty good couple. The heroine was way too dramatic. She kept making a big deal out of every little thing and asking about it over and over. Nobody could put up with that."

My heart sank, and my hand slowly curled into a fist in my lap.

Yves was always forgetting our past, so I kept bringing up the memories we'd shared. Over time, he'd started getting impatient whenever I did, telling me I was being dramatic too.

I took a deep breath and looked up, only to meet his eyes.

For once, the whole table went quiet.

One of our mutual friends, Jason Reed, quickly got to his feet to lighten the mood. "All right, let's take a group picture. Once everyone's busy with work, who knows when we'll all manage to get together again?"

He nudged Yves toward me, then stepped aside and picked up Yves's phone.

"Come on, everybody. Get in."

Everyone stood, but Yves naturally moved to Xenia's side instead. The backs of their hands brushed.

His voice softened. "Xenia shouldn't have to stand by herself. I'll stand with her."

The light in my eyes diminished. I picked up my bag and started to leave.

"You guys take the picture. I've got something to do."

I'd barely turned around when Jason caught my arm and pulled me back.

"There's plenty of room. Just get in."

He positioned me on Yves's other side.

Everyone was laughing and joking around, but I couldn't bring myself to smile.

There were only a few inches between Yves and me, yet it felt like we were worlds apart.

"Let me see!"

The second the photo was taken, Xenia eagerly snatched the phone away. Smiling, she bumped Yves with her arm.

"See? I told you. You look good when you smile.

"If you don't believe me, let's check the older pictures."

Her eyes flickered with mischief as a grin curved across her lips.

The next photo was from the day Yves and I had gone to a bridal studio for our wedding photos. I'd asked him to take a picture to mark the occasion, but Xenia had suddenly stepped into the frame. All that was left of me was a blurry profile at the edge.

She swiped again.

Another picture was from a grocery run Yves and I had made together. Xenia had squeezed into that one too, leaving me tucked into a tiny corner at the top right.

She kept scrolling.

Photo after photo appeared, and not a single one showed my face clearly.

Our friend glanced at me, then slapped Yves on the shoulder. "Where are all your pictures of Sarah? Don't tell me you've got a secret stash you're keeping from us."

"Come on, let's find them." Xenia laughed as she kept scrolling.

Then she stopped.

"Wow. There really isn't a single one."

I stood there, swallowing against the tightness in my throat.

I'd wanted pictures with Yves before too, but he always said he didn't like taking them. He'd only forget about them anyway, so there was no point.

Eventually, I'd stopped asking.

Now I understood.

He hadn't disliked taking pictures.

He just hadn't wanted any with me.

Xenia took my hand with a cheerful smile. "It's fine. You two have plenty of time."

Yves looked at me next.

"Xenia's right. Stop standing there looking miserable."

I stared back at him.

And suddenly, I realized there really wasn't much to this relationship after all.

I was tired of it.

All of it.

The moment I finished speaking, Yves lunged toward me and grabbed my arm."No. I'm not leaving. I don't know her."I remember that we grew up together. You can't make me leave."I yanked my arm free and raised my voice."We've been over for a long time."He flinched, then kept rubbing the battered notebook against his chest."But everyone says you were good to me. They said we were supposed to get married."He looked up at me."And when I see you, I feel safe. I don't want to be alone."I don't want to be by myself."I didn't want to deal with him anymore.Taking a deep breath, I sat down on the couch and shut my eyes.A little while later, he carefully sat down beside me and pulled out the notebook again. Then he started quietly repeating everything he'd written inside, over and over, as if he were trying to carve every insignificant detail into his memory. It suddenly reminded me of that party. He'd known every one of Xenia's preferences and rattled them off without hesitation. How m

I stood there and looked at him. He'd lost a lot of weight. His eyes were sunken, and there was a lost, unfocused look in them. Then he rushed toward me and caught hold of my arm."Are you my wife?"I lowered my eyes and pulled away."No. You've got the wrong person."I turned to leave, but he followed immediately and wrapped his arms tightly around me. He lowered his face to my neck and breathed in."Peach blossoms. It's you."Suddenly, he pulled a battered notebook from his pocket and began flipping frantically through the pages. When he found what he was looking for, he pointed to a line and smiled at me."Sarah likes the smell of peach blossoms. You smell like peach blossoms, so you're Sarah."You're my wife."His whole body began to shake."You are. You're my wife, aren't you?"I stepped back without reacting."No. Your wife is Xenia."Then I turned and walked away.Yves immediately tried to follow, but Jason grabbed him."Don't. She doesn't want to see you.""No. I don't remember

The moment I arrived in Yelmont, I blocked Yves on everything.Only after I was certain he had no way to reach me did I finally feel myself relax. For the next few days, I let myself do whatever I wanted. I stayed out late, slept through half the day, and completely lost track of any normal schedule.I'd never felt so free. There had been so many times when I'd wanted to travel before, only to give up the idea because I was worried about Yves and his condition.Looking back now, I realized how many chances I'd missed to simply enjoy my own life. After another two weeks of taking it easy, I rented a small house with a yard and planted some flowers and greenery.Little by little, I felt calmer too.Eventually, I updated my old resume and landed a job at a company nearby. My commute was only ten minutes, and before long, my life had settled into a comfortable routine. Then one day, Jason called.I hesitated before answering."What is it?"There was a pause on the other end."Are you doing

Yves raced home with only one thought left in his head: find Sarah.By the time he reached the front door, his throat kept working as he stood there, unable to make himself go in. Eventually, he pushed the door open and carefully laid the wedding dress across the couch."Sarah, I'm home."I brought your dress back too."Only his own voice echoed through the empty house. He stumbled toward the bedroom. No one.His breathing quickened as he began moving faster, throwing open door after door until he'd searched every room.Sarah was nowhere to be found.Only a few of his coats still hung in the closet. All the bottles and jars that had once covered her vanity were gone.Yves stood there, completely lost. This wasn't the home he knew.He pressed a hand to his chest as pain spread through it, his breathing becoming harder with every second. Veins stood out along his skin as he doubled over helplessly. The boutonniere pinned to his jacket fell to the floor. The small tag marked "Groom" made

"Who said that was what I wanted?"Who told you I wanted this?"Yves stood frozen, every muscle in his body rigid."Ms. Queen told us," Emily answered quietly. "She said there would be a different bride and that we shouldn't contact her anymore."She glanced uneasily around the venue. "So... what would you like us to do about today's ceremony?"Yves's hands slowly curled into fists, his chest rising and falling hard.Heat burned behind his eyes. One thought drowned out everything else.Sarah had left him at the altar. He couldn't make himself believe it.Xenia, meanwhile, didn't seem to understand what was happening. Gathering up the skirt of the wedding gown, she walked over to him."Yves, Sarah only left because she was upset. Once she calms down and thinks it through, she'll come back."There's no need to panic."And since everything's already set up for the wedding, maybe today you and I could..."She bit her lip and shyly reached for his sleeve.Yves finally looked at her.His han

I turned around immediately, but Xenia hurried after me and grabbed my wrist.A taunting smile played at the corner of her mouth. "You really misunderstood. There's nothing going on between Yves and me."We're just... we're just friends.""Friends?"I gave a bitter laugh and calmly pulled my wrist free, my eyes sweeping over the kiss marks covering her skin.Xenia's eyes immediately reddened, tears spilling down her cheeks as though she were the one who'd been wronged."Sarah, we're best friends. Please don't shut me out.""Not anymore."I stepped farther away from her.Our friendship had ended the moment she set her sights on my boyfriend. The next second, Yves rushed over and put himself between us, shielding Xenia behind him."She apologized because she was trying to spare your feelings, and you're still going after her. When are you going to stop?"My lips twitched. It felt as though my heart were being squeezed out of shape inside my chest."I'm the one who won't stop?"I looked s
