Chapter 2

Autor: Tonya Hugh
"I need to use the restroom."

I blinked hard against the tears gathering in my eyes and forced the words out evenly before hurrying away.

Once inside, I braced both hands on the sink and struggled to catch my breath. When I finally looked up, the woman in the mirror had dark circles under her eyes and several fresh breakouts across her face.

I'd barely slept these past few days, trying to make sure everything for the wedding went smoothly.

Now I wasn't even sure what any of it was for.

It took me a long time to pull myself together. When I finally stepped back into the hall, I noticed the private room door hadn't closed all the way.

Jason's voice drifted through the gap.

"Sarah was barely holding it together when she ran out. Her eyes were red. Aren't you going to go after her?"

Yves sounded completely unconcerned.

"What's there to talk about? I've already forgotten why she's upset."

Jason sighed. "You've been together all these years, and you couldn't even get her name right. Of course that hurt."

Yves frowned, irritation showing in every line of his face.

"If I have to comfort her over something this small, that's exhausting."

As he spoke, he gently pushed a plate of peeled grapes toward Xenia.

Xenia immediately agreed. "Exactly. I'd never get hung up on something like that.

"Isn't being together supposed to mean doing whatever makes you happy?"

My fingers curled at my sides.

For a moment, I could barely breathe. Acid churned in my stomach.

Yves hadn't always been like this.

His memory problems used to be even worse than they were now. Even so, every morning, he would patiently ask who I was, then tell me over and over that he loved me.

Whenever I was upset, he would apologize a hundred and one times if that was what it took to make me feel better, even if he'd already said the same words countless times before.

He just didn't want to anymore.

I slowly closed my eyes, turned around, and left.

When I got home, I dropped my bag on the entryway table.

Beside it sat the mugs Xenia had brought over yesterday.

There had been one matching pair meant for a couple, plus a free extra.

Without either of them needing to say a word, Yves and Xenia had taken the matching pair and left the free one for me.

It wasn't the only time something like that had happened.

I'd wanted static-cling wedding decals for the windows, but Xenia said they wouldn't stay up, so Yves told me to change them.

Then there was the large wedding photo we were supposed to display at the entrance. I'd spent days choosing one, only for Xenia to say she didn't like it.

That was enough for Yves to reject it.

He went with the photo she picked instead, even though I took up less than one-sixth of the frame.

Somewhere along the way, Xenia had quietly worked her way into every corner of my life.

I let out a slow breath and began sorting through the wedding supplies I could still return.

As I peeled the last wedding decoration from the cabinet, I accidentally knocked down a thick notebook.

I picked it up and opened it.

Page after page was filled with details about Xenia.

Ninety-nine pages in all.

Even his friends and family each had more than a dozen pages devoted to them.

As for me?

I was on the very last page.

Just one lonely name.

A faint smile tugged at my lips as exhaustion rose inside me like floodwater.

No wonder he couldn't remember me.

I was the least important page in his entire life.

I'd barely set the notebook down when my phone vibrated sharply.

I opened it without thinking.

Xenia had posted something a few minutes earlier.

[Love being taken care of like this.]

The photo showed Yves's phone screen, packed with alarms.

[7:30 AM - Xenia wakes up]

[8:00 AM - Remind Xenia to eat breakfast and drink water]

...

The reminders continued all the way to ten at night.

[10:00 PM - Remind Xenia to go to bed]

My fingertip rested against the screen, pale under the cold glow.

It felt as if my heart were being peeled open layer by layer. The pain was unbearable, yet there wasn't a drop of blood.

Then I remembered something from years ago.

I'd had kidney stones and needed to go to the hospital every day. I'd asked Yves to pick me up at night, but he kept forgetting.

The meals I told him I was craving wouldn't show up on our table even two weeks later.

He forgot those too.

Except now I understood.

The truth was, he simply didn't want to go to that much trouble for me.

I pressed a hand to the dull ache in my chest, my whole body heavy and weak, as if I were submerged underwater.

My fingers trembled slightly as I calmly tapped Like beneath Xenia's post.

Then I closed the app, opened a travel booking site, and scrolled through the list of destinations.

My eyes finally stopped on Yelmont.

I bought the ticket.

The moment I finished speaking, Yves lunged toward me and grabbed my arm."No. I'm not leaving. I don't know her."I remember that we grew up together. You can't make me leave."I yanked my arm free and raised my voice."We've been over for a long time."He flinched, then kept rubbing the battered notebook against his chest."But everyone says you were good to me. They said we were supposed to get married."He looked up at me."And when I see you, I feel safe. I don't want to be alone."I don't want to be by myself."I didn't want to deal with him anymore.Taking a deep breath, I sat down on the couch and shut my eyes.A little while later, he carefully sat down beside me and pulled out the notebook again. Then he started quietly repeating everything he'd written inside, over and over, as if he were trying to carve every insignificant detail into his memory. It suddenly reminded me of that party. He'd known every one of Xenia's preferences and rattled them off without hesitation. How m

I stood there and looked at him. He'd lost a lot of weight. His eyes were sunken, and there was a lost, unfocused look in them. Then he rushed toward me and caught hold of my arm."Are you my wife?"I lowered my eyes and pulled away."No. You've got the wrong person."I turned to leave, but he followed immediately and wrapped his arms tightly around me. He lowered his face to my neck and breathed in."Peach blossoms. It's you."Suddenly, he pulled a battered notebook from his pocket and began flipping frantically through the pages. When he found what he was looking for, he pointed to a line and smiled at me."Sarah likes the smell of peach blossoms. You smell like peach blossoms, so you're Sarah."You're my wife."His whole body began to shake."You are. You're my wife, aren't you?"I stepped back without reacting."No. Your wife is Xenia."Then I turned and walked away.Yves immediately tried to follow, but Jason grabbed him."Don't. She doesn't want to see you.""No. I don't remember

The moment I arrived in Yelmont, I blocked Yves on everything.Only after I was certain he had no way to reach me did I finally feel myself relax. For the next few days, I let myself do whatever I wanted. I stayed out late, slept through half the day, and completely lost track of any normal schedule.I'd never felt so free. There had been so many times when I'd wanted to travel before, only to give up the idea because I was worried about Yves and his condition.Looking back now, I realized how many chances I'd missed to simply enjoy my own life. After another two weeks of taking it easy, I rented a small house with a yard and planted some flowers and greenery.Little by little, I felt calmer too.Eventually, I updated my old resume and landed a job at a company nearby. My commute was only ten minutes, and before long, my life had settled into a comfortable routine. Then one day, Jason called.I hesitated before answering."What is it?"There was a pause on the other end."Are you doing

Yves raced home with only one thought left in his head: find Sarah.By the time he reached the front door, his throat kept working as he stood there, unable to make himself go in. Eventually, he pushed the door open and carefully laid the wedding dress across the couch."Sarah, I'm home."I brought your dress back too."Only his own voice echoed through the empty house. He stumbled toward the bedroom. No one.His breathing quickened as he began moving faster, throwing open door after door until he'd searched every room.Sarah was nowhere to be found.Only a few of his coats still hung in the closet. All the bottles and jars that had once covered her vanity were gone.Yves stood there, completely lost. This wasn't the home he knew.He pressed a hand to his chest as pain spread through it, his breathing becoming harder with every second. Veins stood out along his skin as he doubled over helplessly. The boutonniere pinned to his jacket fell to the floor. The small tag marked "Groom" made

"Who said that was what I wanted?"Who told you I wanted this?"Yves stood frozen, every muscle in his body rigid."Ms. Queen told us," Emily answered quietly. "She said there would be a different bride and that we shouldn't contact her anymore."She glanced uneasily around the venue. "So... what would you like us to do about today's ceremony?"Yves's hands slowly curled into fists, his chest rising and falling hard.Heat burned behind his eyes. One thought drowned out everything else.Sarah had left him at the altar. He couldn't make himself believe it.Xenia, meanwhile, didn't seem to understand what was happening. Gathering up the skirt of the wedding gown, she walked over to him."Yves, Sarah only left because she was upset. Once she calms down and thinks it through, she'll come back."There's no need to panic."And since everything's already set up for the wedding, maybe today you and I could..."She bit her lip and shyly reached for his sleeve.Yves finally looked at her.His han

I turned around immediately, but Xenia hurried after me and grabbed my wrist.A taunting smile played at the corner of her mouth. "You really misunderstood. There's nothing going on between Yves and me."We're just... we're just friends.""Friends?"I gave a bitter laugh and calmly pulled my wrist free, my eyes sweeping over the kiss marks covering her skin.Xenia's eyes immediately reddened, tears spilling down her cheeks as though she were the one who'd been wronged."Sarah, we're best friends. Please don't shut me out.""Not anymore."I stepped farther away from her.Our friendship had ended the moment she set her sights on my boyfriend. The next second, Yves rushed over and put himself between us, shielding Xenia behind him."She apologized because she was trying to spare your feelings, and you're still going after her. When are you going to stop?"My lips twitched. It felt as though my heart were being squeezed out of shape inside my chest."I'm the one who won't stop?"I looked s
