Chapter 1

ผู้เขียน: Ann Tenner
My best friend, Cassidy Lockhart, was with my boyfriend, Silas Culburn, when he came home. I could hear their loud banter before they even made it past the threshold.

Silas was holding a tiara, and the moment he walked in, he placed it on my head. "Whitney, I bought this tiara especially for you! Do you like it?"

I took the tiara off and set it on the table. Cassidy had already worn it and posted photos of it on her social media. If Silas had spared even a moment to check his social media, he wouldn't have tried to pass it off as a gift. Or maybe he had seen it and just didn't care.

Cassidy came over and wrapped her arms around my neck affectionately. "Whitney, the event at the princess theme park was incredible. It's a shame you weren't there to see it."

I pulled away from her. "Why didn't you invite me, then?"

Cassidy's lips parted and closed a couple of times, but no words came out. She shot Silas a helpless look.

His tone instantly turned impatient. "We were just being considerate! You're always so worried about spending money. We knew you'd never agree to go to a theme park."

A single ticket cost almost 100 dollars. He was right that I wouldn't have wanted to spend that kind of money on it.

Both Silas and I were college students who'd made it out of a small town, so I was usually thrifty. His family wasn't badly off, but he'd been willing to work part-time jobs with me and save up for our future together.

But what bothered me was that they hadn't even bothered to ask me.

I pointed at the tiara and asked, "Silas, how much did this tiara cost?"

Silas stiffened, then forced out an answer. "It was free with a VIP pass."

"So I'm only good enough for things that cost nothing, is that it?"

I looked at the 200-dollar silk scarf Cassidy had tied around her neck, and a sharp stab of pain went through my chest.

Just last week, I'd broken my glasses. My part-time paycheck hadn't come in yet, and a new pair cost 100 dollars, so I'd asked Silas if I could use the money in our joint account to buy them.

He had told me that that was our wedding fund, and that we'd agreed neither of us would touch it. Since his tutoring job paid daily, he assured me that he'd buy me a new pair as soon as he got paid.

But in the end, he never brought it up again, and he never bought me the replacement glasses.

With a -5.00 prescription, I spent an entire week wearing glasses with cracks in the lenses.

It wasn't that he had no money, and it wasn't like we strictly couldn't use the wedding fund. He just chose to spend it on fulfilling Cassidy's princess fantasy instead.

Silas blinked, clearly not expecting me to get so worked up. Then his expression soured. "You're always preaching about being frugal. Why turn down something free? I brought it all the way back for you, and you're throwing a fit?"

I pulled up Cassidy's social media post on my phone and zoomed in for him to see. "Are you sure it was especially for me?"

Silas went pale, then rubbed his nose guiltily. "Cady only wore it for a little while. It's practically new. Don't make such a big deal out of it."

I looked at him with disappointment. "You spent 6,000 dollars, of which 3,000 dollars was mine. Transfer the money back to me within 24 hours. I'm moving out."

Silas stared at me in disbelief. "You're asking me for money now? Whitney Handel, Cassidy is your best friend, and you were the one who told me to take good care of her! Her family just went bankrupt not too long ago. How can you be so cruel?"

So I was the cruel one now? I was so angry that a humorless laugh escaped me.

Ever since Cassidy's family went bankrupt, I'd been paying her rent. All her meals and coffee were also ordered on my dime, and she always insisted on the most expensive options.

It had been two months, and I had bills to pay too. But when I tried talking to her, she simply refused to listen. She said that every princess had their knight in shining armor to save them. I just never expected her knight to be Silas.

"Silas, if you want to be Cassidy's knight and spoil her like a princess, by all means, go ahead. But you don't get to do it using my money!"

Eventually, I heard the news from Mom. She said Cassidy filed a police report, and Silas was detained for 15 days on assault charges. After he was released, he lost his job and had to start over. But Cassidy clung to him like a ghost, following him everywhere. In the end, Silas had no choice but to sublet the house and leave Elmsworth altogether. As for where he went, no one knew, because he was afraid that if he divulged anything, Cassidy would track him down again.Cassidy, with no one left to support her, still refused to find a job. Her parents, drowning in debt, hastily found someone and married her off.Mom couldn't stop laughing when she told me this. "Talk about karma! You made the right call to leave them when you did, Whitney!"I just smiled and said nothing.…One day, I received a message from Silas. "I'm coming to meet you."He actually showed up outside my office building that afternoon. Looking at him, he must have traveled a long way. His hair was a mess, he had

Cassidy's voice shot up instantly. "You don't have any money? How could you not? Your family's rich! Just ask your parents for some! Your mom likes me well enough anyway.""I'm saving my money up for my wedding with Whitney!" Silas exclaimed. "I can't give you any more!"Cassidy laughed like she'd heard the funniest joke. "Are you kidding me? Whitney doesn't even want you anymore! Who are you marrying? A ghost?"Silas' expression darkened even more. "Cassidy, watch your mouth! My business with Whitney is none of your concern."Cassidy raised her voice right back. "I want no part in your mess at all! I just want the money! You promised to be my knight! You can't go back on your word!"Silas rubbed his temples, frustrated. "Cassidy, why can't you learn from Whitney and stand on your own two feet?"Cassidy stared at him in disbelief. "Since when does a princess need to earn money? Isn't that your job? You promised Whitney you'd take care of me! If it weren't for you, Whitney wouldn'

Ever since I left, Silas felt like the entire house was empty. It was only just a few pieces of clothing missing, but somehow the place felt hollow and desolate. The flowers in the living room vase had been wilted for days. In the past, I would replace them with fresh ones every other day.Silas sat on the couch, staring out at the balcony. At this time of day, I would usually be sitting there quietly reading.Regret burned in his eyes. He had asked every friend he knew, but no one had any idea where I was. He missed me so much it was driving him crazy. But I'd vanished without a trace, as if I'd never existed. He'd sent me countless messages and made countless calls from new numbers, but I never answered any of them.At first, he thought that I had left because I was just throwing a tantrum, and that I would cool off after a few days. He believed that after five years together, it would be impossible for me to just walk away so easily. But I had truly left.Just then, the doorbe

I suddenly found it a little funny. Silas had mentioned "the three of us". That meant he still included Cassidy in his plans."No, Silas," I said. "You can go ahead and keep being her knight. I'm done chasing after you."Silas was silent for a while before slowly speaking. "Are you still angry? Because I took care of Cassidy? I'm only doing it because she twisted her ankle. There's really nothing else to it. Whitney, Cady is your best friend. Can't you be a little more considerate?""Silas, won't you try to understand where I'm coming from, then?" I asked softly. "I don't want to be caught between the two of you. Love and marriage are matters between two people, not three. Anyway, just transfer me my money, and we'll call it even."His breathing grew heavier. "Whitney, you even left the card behind. Are you really abandoning me too? We've been together for five years! You can't break up with me just because I prioritized Cassidy over you this one time—""It's not just this one tim

I turned off my phone once I boarded the plane. Outside the window, the sky was pitch black. I put on my headphones, played some music, and slowly drifted off to sleep. After landing, I turned my phone back on to find over 20 missed calls and messages, all from an unknown number."Whitney, what do you mean by this? Who said anything about breaking up? I'm not breaking up with you!"I'll deposit the 6,000 dollars back into our wedding fund. Don't worry about it."I still need to take care of Cady tonight. I'll come back tomorrow and explain everything."I didn't send him a single reply. It was already the early hours of the next morning when I arrived in Briarwood. The dry air stung my face.I dragged my suitcase out of the airport and, following the navigation, took a cab to the area near my new workplace. Then, I left my luggage at the front desk of the company and started looking for housing nearby. As it was graduation season, vacancies were scarce. I looked at several pl

I had even recorded a video of Silas drying my hair for me and posted it on my social media to show off how much he cared about me.Cassidy had left a comment on that post. "Come on, he's just putting on an act. You could spend 20-odd bucks at a salon, and it'd even come with a head massage!"I'd laughed and replied, "He's my personal hairstylist. No one else compares."But now, his attention was no longer reserved for me alone."My parents are in Elmsworth?" Silas' voice pulled me back to the present."Flora's sick," I said. "She's at Elmsworth General Hospital. Patrick called you, but he couldn't reach you."Silas' expression instantly turned tense. He checked his phone and saw several missed calls. "I must have missed it because I was helping Cady wash her hair. Come on, let's go to the hospital now."He reached out to take my hand, but I stepped aside and avoided him. His hand froze in midair before he awkwardly pulled it back. "You're always getting upset over nothing," h
