Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Ann Tenner
Silas raised his voice. "Fine, I'll pay you back tomorrow, alright?"

Cassidy had the kind of eyes that made people protective of her, and at present, they had a twinkle in them. She stepped over and took my hand, lowering her voice. "Whitney, it's just a couple thousand dollars. What's there to be mad about? Just apologize to Silas, and let's put this behind us."

I looked at her and suddenly felt like I didn't know her anymore. In the past, whenever Silas and I argued, she'd always have my back and chew out Silas for me.

In our four years of college, Silas was the one person Cassidy hated the most. She thought he wasn't good enough for me. Every time they met, it felt like a war was going on, and neither of them would back down.

They'd argue over everything under the sun, from what meals we should have and what movies we should watch to where we should go shopping. It used to give me a headache, and I'd just zone out on my phone to escape.

Until one time, I saw them suddenly burst out laughing together mid-argument. There was no hostility in their eyes, only affection.

I had thought I was imagining things. But now, I realized I'd been the fool all along. They'd been crossing lines right under my nose, hiding behind the cover of bickering.

I shook Cassidy off and said coldly, "I did nothing wrong. Why should I apologize?"

I hadn't used much force, but Cassidy staggered and fell to the floor.

Silas immediately shoved me aside and rushed to help her up. "Cady's injured her leg, and yet you shoved her that hard?" he shouted at me. "You're too much, Whitney!"

The back of my head slammed hard against the wall behind me, and I let out a groan from the pain.

Silas gently lifted Cassidy's skirt, revealing her swollen, red ankle. It looked like she'd twisted it.

Cassidy pulled her leg back, her face scrunched up in pain. "I'm fine," she said gingerly. "Whitney didn't mean to. Don't be mad at her."

But her eyes were red-rimmed, and she looked utterly pitiful.

Silas looked up at me. "Whitney, go and buy some ointment. I'll help Cady rub it in, or she won't be able to walk tomorrow."

I rubbed the back of my head and didn't respond.

Then, Silas grew impatient and barked, "Hurry, Whitney!"

I turned and went into our room, took out the half-empty tube of ointment, and handed it to him.

Silas' expression stiffened. He clearly hadn't expected me to have any at home. But Cassidy suddenly let out a pained whimper, snapping him back to attention.

He helped her onto the couch, opened the tube, and gently rubbed the ointment onto her swollen ankle with tender care.

I stood off to the side, watching them coldly.

Two weeks ago, I had also twisted my ankle. Back then, Silas had been in a rush to get in line to get Cassidy a pair of newly released designer sneakers. He hadn't even looked back at me, and I had to limp all the way back home myself.

When I called him to ask if he could pick up some ointment for me on his way back, he responded in an annoyed tone, "Just go to any pharmacy and have the pharmacist help you. I'm almost at the front of the line. Gotta go!"

Worried I wouldn't be able to make it to work the next day, I'd hobbled out to find a pharmacy despite the pain. That was how I ended up with the half-used tube of ointment.

"Ouch! It hurts, Silas! Can't you be a bit gentler?"

"Just sit still and bear with it."

Cassidy turned to me with a complaint. "Whitney, won't you do something about Silas? He's being so rough!"

Silas shot back immediately, "You should count yourself lucky! I've never rubbed any other woman's feet before!"

Cassidy pouted. "Who cares."

But she was clearly smiling.

Swallowing the bitterness in me, I turned and walked back into the room.

I opened my laptop, pulled up the job offer email from a company in Briarwood that had arrived at noon, and hit reply. I accepted the position and agreed to start in three days.

Eventually, I heard the news from Mom. She said Cassidy filed a police report, and Silas was detained for 15 days on assault charges. After he was released, he lost his job and had to start over. But Cassidy clung to him like a ghost, following him everywhere. In the end, Silas had no choice but to sublet the house and leave Elmsworth altogether. As for where he went, no one knew, because he was afraid that if he divulged anything, Cassidy would track him down again.Cassidy, with no one left to support her, still refused to find a job. Her parents, drowning in debt, hastily found someone and married her off.Mom couldn't stop laughing when she told me this. "Talk about karma! You made the right call to leave them when you did, Whitney!"I just smiled and said nothing.…One day, I received a message from Silas. "I'm coming to meet you."He actually showed up outside my office building that afternoon. Looking at him, he must have traveled a long way. His hair was a mess, he had

Cassidy's voice shot up instantly. "You don't have any money? How could you not? Your family's rich! Just ask your parents for some! Your mom likes me well enough anyway.""I'm saving my money up for my wedding with Whitney!" Silas exclaimed. "I can't give you any more!"Cassidy laughed like she'd heard the funniest joke. "Are you kidding me? Whitney doesn't even want you anymore! Who are you marrying? A ghost?"Silas' expression darkened even more. "Cassidy, watch your mouth! My business with Whitney is none of your concern."Cassidy raised her voice right back. "I want no part in your mess at all! I just want the money! You promised to be my knight! You can't go back on your word!"Silas rubbed his temples, frustrated. "Cassidy, why can't you learn from Whitney and stand on your own two feet?"Cassidy stared at him in disbelief. "Since when does a princess need to earn money? Isn't that your job? You promised Whitney you'd take care of me! If it weren't for you, Whitney wouldn'

Ever since I left, Silas felt like the entire house was empty. It was only just a few pieces of clothing missing, but somehow the place felt hollow and desolate. The flowers in the living room vase had been wilted for days. In the past, I would replace them with fresh ones every other day.Silas sat on the couch, staring out at the balcony. At this time of day, I would usually be sitting there quietly reading.Regret burned in his eyes. He had asked every friend he knew, but no one had any idea where I was. He missed me so much it was driving him crazy. But I'd vanished without a trace, as if I'd never existed. He'd sent me countless messages and made countless calls from new numbers, but I never answered any of them.At first, he thought that I had left because I was just throwing a tantrum, and that I would cool off after a few days. He believed that after five years together, it would be impossible for me to just walk away so easily. But I had truly left.Just then, the doorbe

I suddenly found it a little funny. Silas had mentioned "the three of us". That meant he still included Cassidy in his plans."No, Silas," I said. "You can go ahead and keep being her knight. I'm done chasing after you."Silas was silent for a while before slowly speaking. "Are you still angry? Because I took care of Cassidy? I'm only doing it because she twisted her ankle. There's really nothing else to it. Whitney, Cady is your best friend. Can't you be a little more considerate?""Silas, won't you try to understand where I'm coming from, then?" I asked softly. "I don't want to be caught between the two of you. Love and marriage are matters between two people, not three. Anyway, just transfer me my money, and we'll call it even."His breathing grew heavier. "Whitney, you even left the card behind. Are you really abandoning me too? We've been together for five years! You can't break up with me just because I prioritized Cassidy over you this one time—""It's not just this one tim

I turned off my phone once I boarded the plane. Outside the window, the sky was pitch black. I put on my headphones, played some music, and slowly drifted off to sleep. After landing, I turned my phone back on to find over 20 missed calls and messages, all from an unknown number."Whitney, what do you mean by this? Who said anything about breaking up? I'm not breaking up with you!"I'll deposit the 6,000 dollars back into our wedding fund. Don't worry about it."I still need to take care of Cady tonight. I'll come back tomorrow and explain everything."I didn't send him a single reply. It was already the early hours of the next morning when I arrived in Briarwood. The dry air stung my face.I dragged my suitcase out of the airport and, following the navigation, took a cab to the area near my new workplace. Then, I left my luggage at the front desk of the company and started looking for housing nearby. As it was graduation season, vacancies were scarce. I looked at several pl

I had even recorded a video of Silas drying my hair for me and posted it on my social media to show off how much he cared about me.Cassidy had left a comment on that post. "Come on, he's just putting on an act. You could spend 20-odd bucks at a salon, and it'd even come with a head massage!"I'd laughed and replied, "He's my personal hairstylist. No one else compares."But now, his attention was no longer reserved for me alone."My parents are in Elmsworth?" Silas' voice pulled me back to the present."Flora's sick," I said. "She's at Elmsworth General Hospital. Patrick called you, but he couldn't reach you."Silas' expression instantly turned tense. He checked his phone and saw several missed calls. "I must have missed it because I was helping Cady wash her hair. Come on, let's go to the hospital now."He reached out to take my hand, but I stepped aside and avoided him. His hand froze in midair before he awkwardly pulled it back. "You're always getting upset over nothing," h
